A neurotherapy protocol to remediate cognitive deficits after adjuvant chemotherapy: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is undeniably effective in increasing survival rates but many breast cancer survivors (BCS) exhibit side effects including nausea, fatigue, stress, and neurocognitive deficits, known as "chemobrain." This pilot study explored how neurotherapy, or EEG biofeedback, a non-pharmacological approach, improved neurocognitive, behavioral, and neurophysiological deficits associated with BCS who underwent chemotherapy. METHODS: Subjects underwent 18 sessions of EEG biofeedback training, in which audio and visual feedback occurred with successful shift

Neurophysiological and autonomic effects of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in schizophrenia: a randomized controlled EEG-GSR study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and emotion dysregulation are core features of schizophrenia and remain insufficiently addressed by pharmacological treatment. Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) has demonstrated efficacy in improving neurocognitive performance; however, evidence linking behavioral improvements to neurophysiological and autonomic mechanisms remains limited. The present randomized controlled trial examined the effects of CRT on electrophysiological, autonomic, cognitive, and clinical outcomes in clinically stable individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: Fifty-seven outpatients

Long-lasting improvement of memory after targeted cognitive remediation in temporal epilepsy: A randomized control study.

BACKGROUND: Memory deficits are a major burden in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), contributing to the impaired quality of life of patients. Short- and long-term efficacy of memory remediation in TLE is still debated. The aim of our study was to assess the short- and long-term efficacy of a cognitive remediation program, COMETE (COgnitive Rehabilitation of MEmory in Temporal Epilepsy), targeting specifically episodic memory in patients with TLE. METHODS: In this prospective randomized single-blinded trial, patients from different French epilepsy centers were randomly assigned in a 2:4 ratio, via

Efficacy of cognitive remediation in bipolar disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

A significant percentage of people with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit suboptimal functional adjustment, even when appropriately treated and after symptomatic recovery is achieved. Given that cognitive impairment is one of the strongest correlates of socio-occupational outcomes and quality of life in BD, cognitive remediation (CR) is currently acknowledged as a promising treatment that could help bridge the gap between symptomatic and full functional recovery. The aim of this review was to explore the efficacy of CR approaches in improving cognitive and functional outcomes in BD patients. PubMe

Successful computer-assisted cognitive remediation therapy in patients with unipolar depression: a proof of principle study.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of the extent and severity of cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder (MDD), trials of cognitive remediation have not been conducted. We conducted a 10-week course of cognitive remediation in patients with long-term MDD to probe whether deficits in four targeted cognitive domains, (i) memory, (ii) attention, (iii) executive functioning and (iv) psychomotor speed, could be improved by this intervention. METHOD: We administered a computerized cognitive retraining package (PSSCogReHab) with demonstrated efficacy to 12 stable patients with recurren

Computerised cognitive remediation to enhance mobility in older adults: a single-blind, single-centre, randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Decline in executive functions and related cognitive processes is associated with mobility decline, and these functions might be amenable to cognitive remediation. This study aimed to examine whether a computerised cognitive remediation programme would improve walking in adults aged 70 years and older. METHODS: This single-blind, randomised trial at one academic centre in the USA evaluated the efficacy of an 8-week computerised programme (also known as brain games) of progressive intensity and complexity to improve walking in older adults at high-risk for mobility disability. Evaluation of individual cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) for the treatment of young people with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that there are cognitive inefficiencies underlying Anorexia Nervosa (AN), with CRT showing promise in improving these inefficiencies in adults. This area has yet to be explored in a younger population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of CRT for young people. METHODS: A within-subjects design was used to compare the performance of children and adolescents with AN on several neuropsychological measures administered before and after a course of CRT. RESULTS: Ninety-two female participants diagnosed with AN aged between 11 and 17 (M = 14.8, SD = 1.6), all

Effect of action-based cognitive remediation on cognition and neural activity in bipolar disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is present in bipolar disorder (BD) during the acute and remitted phases and hampers functional recovery. However, there is currently no clinically available treatment with direct and lasting effects on cognitive impairment in BD. We will examine the effect of a novel form of cognitive remediation, action-based cognitive remediation (ABCR), on cognitive impairment in patients with BD, and explore the neural substrates of potential treatment efficacy on cognition. METHODS/DESIGN: The trial has a randomized, controlled, parallel-group design. In total, 58 patien

Equine placental extract supplement as a night barking remedy in dogs with cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

With the aging of pet dogs, there has been an increasing trend in senility-related diseases; additionally, cognitive disorders accompanied by abnormal behaviours are a major burden for owners. Recently, there have been a series of consultations regarding the fact that night barking, which is an abnormal behaviour, remarkably interferes with the owner's sleep and adversely affects the owner's quality of life. However, there has been no effective solution to this problem. In this study, three aged pet dogs diagnosed with dementia were administered an equine placental extract (eqPE) as pet supple

Psychoanalysis as cognitive remediation: Dynamic and Vygotskian perspectives in the analysis of an early adolescent dyslexic girl.

The interface of neurocognitive problems and dynamic concerns are examined in the treatment of an early adolescent dyslexic girl. Despite previous intensive remediation, she had been unable to master reading and spelling, but made remarkable progress after a relatively brief period of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic and Vygotskian perspectives are integrated to provide a model of how play, within the analytic context, is mutative for learning disabled children. Through the process of reexteriorization in the transference, play allows for the interpretation and resolution of traumatic situations

Availability of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in United States Mental Health Facilities Serving Older Adults: A Statistical Study.

INTRODUCTION: Older age is a major risk factor for many neurocognitive disorders like Alzheimer's disease. While there are limited treatment options for improving memory in this population, research has shown that special psychotherapeutic modalities like Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), especially when coupled with psychosocial and vocational rehabilitation (PSR and VCR respectively), benefit older adults. This study examines the availability of these services in US mental health (MH) facilities serving older adults and compares the characteristics of the facilities providing these servic

The cognitive remediation of attention in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND): A meta-analysis and systematic review.

Background: Despite medical advances in Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), patients living with HIV continue to be at risk for developing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). The optimization of non-HAART interventions, including cognitive rehabilitation therapy (CRT), shows promise in reversing the impact of HAND. No data exist indicating the efficacy of CRT in remediating attention skills following neuroHIV. This paper presents a meta-analysis of randomised and non-randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to remediate attention skills following HIV CRT. Methods: The database

Group cognitive remediation therapy for younger adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a feasibility study in a Japanese sample.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) aims to increase patients' cognitive flexibility by practicing new ways of thinking as well as facilitating bigger picture thinking, supporting patients with relevant tasks and encouraging an awareness of their own thinking styles. CRT has been applied in the treatment of adult anorexia nervosa (AN), and has been shown to be effective and acceptable. In adolescents, CRT has been piloted on both individual and group format. However, no studies are published in CRT for adolescents with AN in a Japanese sample. The objectives of this study were to as
