The effect of cold stress on skin damage caused by UVB irradiation was investigated both in vivo and in vitro. Ear skin of mice that had been exposed to cold stress at 0 degree C for 20 min and at 5 degrees C for 24 h was exposed to UVB radiation. Sunburn cell production was less in mice exposed to the lower temperature. In addition, the effect of cold stress on the survival rate of UVB-irradiated rat keratinocytes was examined in a cytotoxicity test, with the results showing that keratinocytes exposed to cold stress of 0 degree C had a higher survival rate than control cells. To pursue a prom

Cold-induced vasoconstriction is a significant contributor that leads to chilblains and hypothermia in humans. However, current animal models have limitations in replicating cold-induced acral injury due to their low sensitivity to cold. Moreover, existing in vitro vascular chips composed of endothelial cells and perfusion systems lack temperature responsiveness, failing to simulate the vasoconstriction observed under cold stress. This study presents a novel approach where a microfluidic bioreactor of vessel-on-a-chip was developed by grafting the inner microchannel surface of polydimethylsilo

Cold-induced neuropathy may play a dominant role in the long-term sequelae with cold sensitivity after local cold injuries (LCIs). Somatosensory functions were assessed and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and motor distal delay (MDD) were measured in the limbs of 31 Norwegian former soldiers with persistent cold intolerance 3-4 years after the primary LCI. NCV measurements were performed in 24 lower and 16 upper extremities. NCV was related to degree of overall subjective complaints quantified by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS). Motor (MNCV) and sensory conduction velocity (SNCV) in the

In rabbits, the tibial nerve was exposed in the lower thigh under general anesthesia and cooled in a metal trough at 1 to 2 degrees C or 5 degrees C for 2, 3, or 4 hours. Nerve conduction studies showed local failure of conduction at the site of cooling which persisted after rewarming, and which was followed by distal degeneration of affected fibers. No persistent conduction block was seen. Changes in maximal velocity indicated that the fastest-conducting motor and afferent axons had been preferentially affected. Histological findings in nerves examined at different intervals after cooling con

Cold intolerance of the hand is characterized by an exaggerated or painful response to cold exposure in an injured or affected extremity. It is a common and often disabling consequence of hand trauma and occurs across a wide range of injuries, including fractures, nerve injuries, and vascular insults. Patients frequently describe pain, numbness, stiffness, color change, and reduced dexterity when exposed to cold environments. The prevalence of cold intolerance following significant hand injury is high. Several studies report that up to 80-90% of patients develop cold-related symptoms after sig

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic Pain (NP) is a chronic pain caused by damage to the nervous system, often manifested as spontaneous pain, pain allergy and abnormal pain. Cold abnormal pain is one of the common manifestations of neuropathic pain, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Lumbar sympathetic nerve resection has been widely used to treat lower limb pain, but its specific mechanism in cold abnormal pain is not yet clear.
MATERIALS: A chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve model and a lumbar sympathectomy (LS) model were established to investigate the effect

There is an association between local cold injuries and Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in the scientific literature, but the time relation and anatomical correlation have not been established. During military training in an Arctic setting, a previously healthy man in his early twenties sustained a freezing cold injury affecting mainly his right index finger. He subsequently developed Raynaud's phenomenon limited to only the part of the index finger that was originally affected by the cold injury. Medical investigation also revealed findings suggestive of subclinical peripheral neuropathy. This case

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of cold storage compared with room temperature (RT) platelet transfusion in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
BACKGROUND: Data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of cold-stored platelet (CSP) transfusion are lacking after TBI.
METHODS: A phase 2, randomized, open-label clinical trial was performed at a single U.S. trauma center. Traumatic brain-injured patients with positive brain imaging and a need for platelet transfusion received up to 2 apheresis units of CSPs stored out to 14 days versus standard care RT platelet

Current methods of storing explanted donor livers at 4 °C in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution result in loss of graft function and ultimately lead to less-than-ideal outcomes post transplantation. Our lab has previously shown that supplementing UW solution with 35-kilodalton polyethylene glycol (PEG) has membrane stabilizing effects for cold stored primary rat hepatocytes in suspension. Expanding on past studies, we here investigate if PEG has the same beneficial effects in an adherent primary rat hepatocyte cold storage model. In addition, we investigated the extent of cold-induced apopt

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is a crucial environmental factor that elevates the risk of cardiovascular disease, but the underlying effect is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the role of cold stress (CS) in cardiac injury and its underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: In this study, a chronic CS-induced myocardial injury model was used; mice were subjected to chronic CS (4°C) for three hours per day for three weeks.
RESULTS: CS could result in myocardial injury by inducing the levels of heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70), enhancing the generation of creatine phosphokinase-isoenzyme (CKMB) and malon

BACKGROUND: Primary graft dysfunction, which is directly related to cold ischemia-reperfusion (CI/R) injury, is a major obstacle in lung transplantation (LTx). Ferroptosis, a novel mode of cell death elicited by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, has been implicated in ischemic events. This study aimed to investigate the role of ferroptosis in LTx-CI/R injury and the effectiveness of liproxstatin-1 (Lip-1), a ferroptosis inhibitor, in alleviating LTx-CI/R injury.
METHODS: LTx-CI/R-induced signal pathway alterations, tissue injury, cell death, inflammatory responses, and ferroptotic features w

As arctic warfare becomes a center focus within Special Operations, cold weather injury looms as both a medical and operational threat. While cold weather injury can range from pernio to hemodynamically unstable systemic hypothermia, the more minor injuries are far more common. However, these present a challenge in austere medical care and can drastically impact mission capability. We present a case of a Special Operations crew chief with cold weather digital injury while at the Arctic Isolation Course in Alaska and his subsequent clinical course. Prevention remains the key for mitigating thes

BACKGROUND: Cold ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a major factor for early graft dysfunction and is associated with rejection episodes in heart transplantation. Clusterin (CLU) is a cytoprotective protein with chaperone activity. This study was designed to examine the impact of donor-expressing CLU on cold IRI.
METHODS: Donor hearts from wild-type C57BL/6J (H-2(b); B6 WT) vs CLU knockout C57BL/6J (H-2(b); B6 KO) mice were stored at 4°C for 8 hours, followed by heterotopic transplantation to B6 WT mice. The functional recovery of heart grafts was determined by scoring palpation, and tissue

INTRODUCTION/AIM: Small bowel is extremely sensitive to ischemia/reperfusion injury. Therefore, we compared the effect of warm and cold ischemia on the intestinal structural changes by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Warm and cold ischemia groups were established on Wistar rats with 1, 3 and 6 h ischemic times (n = 30). Intestinal biopsies were collected after laparotomy and at the end of the ischemia periods. DSC measurement was performed on the mucosa, muscular layer and total intestinal wall.
RESULTS: Our DSC data confirmed that longer warm ischemia

Cold and compression are routinely applied immediately after acute injury or following surgery to alleviate pain, reduce swelling and speed functional recovery. The objective of this literature review is to describe the published clinical findings regarding combined cold and compression therapy in the management of musculoskeletal injuries and after orthopedic operative procedures. Of 33 potential articles triaged, the findings of 21 randomized controlled trials were assessed and summarized. The findings reported by these 21 studies were largely subjective pain outcomes and, to a lesser degree
