The objective of this randomized clinical trial was to determine whether supplementing colostrum at the time of a behavior-based alert would reduce diarrhea severity and improve feeding behavior, activity, and growth in Holstein calves. Calves were trained to use an automated milk feeder (Foerster-Technik) at 3 d of age and offered milk replacer ad libitum until 4 wk, 9 L/d from 4 to 7 wk, and gradually weaned from 7 to 9 wk. Calf starter (20% CP) was offered ad libitum from 3 d of age via a separate automated feeder. A behavioral alert (≤60% rolling deviation in milk intake or drinking speed

The study was conducted on the farms "Aiteke Bi-SK" and "Kedr", which maintain some of the best dairy cattle herds in Kazakhstan. According to the results, the qualitative parameters of colostrum from cows in the experimental group were superior to those of the control group, particularly in fat content. For example, in "Aiteke Bi-SK", the difference in fat content reached 1.38% (P<0.001), and in "Kedr" - 1.34% (P<0.001). Feeding newborn calves with colostrum rich in immunoglobulins led to an increase in body weight by 2.1 kg (P<0.001) on day 10 of life in the first farm compared to the contro

Human colostrum is rich in a variety of nutrients and beneficial bacteria known to benefit host health. Whole genome sequencing was performed to explore the probiotic potential of six bacterial strains isolated from human colostrum, i.e., Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Micrococcus luteus, Micrococcus lylae, Staphylococcus warneri, and Bacillus altitudinis. The genome was completely annotated and characterized by various bioinformatics tools and databases, including RAST, eggNOG, KEGG, CAZy, antiSMASH, and BAGEL. The analysis showed the existence of essential probiotic-associated genes involved i

The commensal microbiota influences the health, feeding efficiency, and reproductive performance of sows. The microbiota composition in the alimentary and genitourinary tracts and in colostrum/milk during pregnancy and lactation also impacts the microbiota and immune system, growth, and health of the piglets. Knowledge of the microbial compositions is important for evaluation of these effects and for discovering ways to improve the health and productivity of the sows. Oral, vaginal, and rectal mucosa and colostrum were sampled from 32 sows of variable parity in late pregnancy, and colostrum wi

The effects on the ontogeny of serum cytokines and immune cells caused by feeding suckling piglets with sow/gilt colostrum and milk replacer was assessed in the present study. After farrowing, the piglets born were randomized into six groups: GG and SS (n = 10/group): piglets were kept with their dam; GS (n = 10): piglets were changed from gilts to sows; SG (n = 10): piglets were changed from sows to gilts; GMR (n = 6) and SMR (n = 8): piglets from either gilts or sows were isolated from the dams and were bottle-fed ad libitum with commercial formula milk replacer. The piglets remained in the

Farrowing induction is a common practice among swine producers to manage timing of farrowing and the labor associated with farrowing. In this experiment, the effect of induction of labor using cloprostenol on Day 114 of gestation ( = 88) was compared to our standard farrowing protocol at USMARC (natural farrowing with induction using cloprostenol on Day 116 if needed, = 82) in gilts and sows up to fourth parity. In a subset of dams ( = 10 each treatment), colostrum was collected within 30 min of birth of the first piglet, and at 4, 8, 12, and 24 h. Colostrum samples were measured for immunoglo

Understanding the mechanisms that underlie neonatal immune function is important for appropriately treating and preventing disease. Cytokines provided in colostrum may affect immune development and function, but data describing cytokine absorption in calves and the effects of colostrum heat treatment on absorption are limited. The objectives of this experiment were to characterize immune responses in calves that received heat-treated (HT) or unheated (UH) colostrum (in terms of growth, rectal temperature, and blood cytokine and IgG concentrations) and to determine calves' ability to absorb IFN

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular protozoan parasite able to infect a wide range of hosts, including humans. Congenital infection can cause severe damage to the fetus. Thus, it is important to detect antibodies against the parasite to confirm clinical manifestations. Considering that all immunoglobulin isotypes may be present in biological samples from newborns and their mothers, this study aimed to evaluate the ability to diagnose recent toxoplasmosis by using colostrum, as an alternative noninvasive way to obtain biological samples, as well

The adequate supply of vitamins A and E to newborns is essential. However, factors such as maternal nutritional status and nutrient interaction may limit its bioavailability. The aim of this study was to establish nutritional status for vitamins A and E and evaluate the correlation of retinol on colostrum alpha-tocopherol in lactating women. A total of 103 lactating women were recruited at a Brazilian public maternity hospital. Fasting serum and colostrum samples were collected in the immediate post-partum. Retinol and alpha-tocopherol levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromato

The ability of the fetal pig intestine to absorb large proteins was investigated in utero. Six pregnant sows were anesthetized (Na pentobarbital) at 99-102 d of gestation (term = 115 +/- 2 d), and a catheter was inserted into the esophagus of two to three fetuses per sow. Via these catheters, sterile solutions (10.0 mL) of colostrum whey (CW, n = 5), milk whey (MW, n = 5), or amniotic fluid (AF, n = 4) were infused into the fetal pig stomachs every 6 h for 6-8 d starting on the day after surgery (d 0). Levels of IgG in the three fluids were 120, 0.5, and 0 mg/mL, respectively. During the first

The influence of colostrum-derived antibody to louping-ill virus on the course of experimental infection was investigated in lambs. Lambs that had high titres of antibody were refractory to infection. Lambs that had low titres of antibody did not develop a viraemia but either showed an antibody reaction or were sensitized as judged by the immune response, which was typical of an anamnestic response, after rechallenge. Animals that had no antibody 34-20 days before challenge had either no or very slight viraemia, but did develop an antibody response with titres as high as those of control lambs

Milk-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a promising source of molecules with therapeutic potential. Bovine colostrum is particularly enriched in EVs, which carry cargo of proteins involved in immune regulation, development and cellular signalling. Some studies have explored their role as bioactive anti-cancer agents, however, their mechanistic effects remain underexplored. Here, we show that colostrum-derived EVs (Col-EVs) exert anti-proliferative effects in gastrointestinal cancer models, including cell lines and patient-derived organoids, which is independent of apoptosis induction. Our aging population and the accompanying decline in immune function is a growing concern that may be addressed by finding natural methods to enhance the immunocompetence of our elderly. Bovine milk and colostrum from cows that have been immunized have been shown to provide additional immunoglobulins and other bioactive molecules that enhance immune function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of hyperimmune bovine colostrum to alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in a murine model. The collagen-induced arthritis DBA/1J murine model was used for this study. Mice

Bovine colostrum is a rich source of nutrients and immunologically active components that play a role in conveying passive immunity to the offspring, protection and maturation of new-born's gastrointestinal tract. Colostrum has exerted positive effects in diseases affecting gastrointestinal tract, as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, health-promoting effects in type 1 diabetes have not been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate therapeutic value of oral administration of standardized bovine colostrum derivative (SBCD) in three models of type 1 diabetes (T1D): spontaneously d

Background/Objectives: Obesity is a major public health problem associated with chronic inflammation and functional alterations in multiple organs and systems. Few studies have examined colostrum from obese mothers, particularly with respect to macrophage function, enzyme and cytokine concentrations, and the role of melatonin in immune modulation. This study aimed to evaluate melatonin levels and their effects on macrophage polarization, cytokine concentrations, nitric oxide synthase [iNOS], and arginase in colostrum from obese mothers. Colostrum samples were collected from eutrophic mothers [

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulins ingested via colostrum must remain intact to be absorbed by the neonate. Equine colostrum contains antitrypsin activity, which likely protects these proteins from proteolysis in the gastrointestinal tract.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To quantify antitrypsin activity in equine colostrum and milk, describe its temporal changes during the first five days after parturition, compare actitvity between left and right mammary glands, evaluate differences between nulliparous and pluriparous mares, and examine associations with immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations and mare age.

Colostrum is a source of growth factors and nutrients aiding newborns in adaptation to extrauterine life. Its clinical use has been investigated as an immunological component to protect, especially preterm newborns, from early infectious complications. This article aims to investigate the current knowledge about the value of colostrum in enhancing mechanisms of intestinal adaptation in patients affected by Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS). A MEDLINE systematic search was conducted. Inclusion criteria were English language and post-operative colostrum administration in animals and humans undergoing b

In its early life a kitten faces many significant events including separation from its mother, re-homing and vaccination. The kitten is also slowly adapting to their post-weaning diet. Recent advances in companion animal nutrition have indicated that functional ingredients such as colostrum can help support the immune system and gastrointestinal health. Here we report for the first time the effect of feeding a diet containing 0.1% spray dried bovine colostrum (BC) to growing kittens on gut-associated lymphoid (GALT) tissue responses, systemic immune responses, and on intestinal microbiota stab

The rate of post-transplant mothers who breastfeed while on immunosuppression is progressively increasing. Data on breastfeeding while on cyclosporine-based regimens are limited. Therefore, we assessed the amount of cyclosporine and its metabolites that might be ingested by a breastfed infant by measuring the concentration of cyclosporine and its metabolites in the colostrum of seven post-transplant mothers. The mean concentration of cyclosporine in the colostrum was 22.40 ± 9.43 mcg/L, and the estimated mean daily dose of the drug was 1049.22 ± 397.41 ng/kg/24 h. Only three metabolites (AM1,
