After the transition from the acute to the chronic phase of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, complement mediates long-term storage of virions in germinal centers (GC) of lymphoid tissue. The contribution of particular complement receptors (CRs) to virus trapping in GC was studied on tonsillar specimens from HIV-infected individuals. In a girl with recurrent haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), persistently low serum levels of C3 were found. Analysis of complement phenotype revealed a hypomorphic variant of C3 Fast in the patient (C3fS) and a normal heterozygous pattern in both parents and the brother (C3FS). Other complement aberrations in the patient were: the presence of a null gene for C4A and C4B and low serum levels of factor H. The father also had partial factor H deficiency. BACKGROUND: Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) testing is an important procedure in the diagnosis of autoimmune bullous dermatoses. We investigated the expression of C3d in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue of autoimmune bullous dermatoses.
METHODS: The immunohistochemical expression of C3d in bullous pemphigoid (BP) (n = 32), pemphigoid gestationis (PG) (n = 3), pemphigus (n = 14), dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring (DHD) (n = 10), linear immunoglobulin A (IgA) dermatosis (n = 4), mixed forms of BP and linear IgA dermatosis (n = 2), and 44 controls was analyzed on formalin-fixed tissue.

Twenty-three patients hospitalized for acute asthma were studied for a peripheral blood complement profile consisting of C3, C4, C3d, iC3b, C4d, and Bb concentrations. Compared with normals (n = 22) and patients (n = 10) with acute bacterial infections (ABI), asthmatic patients had significantly higher serum C3 concentrations (P less than .001). METHODS: C1q, mannose binding lectin (MBL), Bb, C4d, C3d and membrane attack complex (MAC) (C5b-9) deposition and complement regulate proteins (CD46, CD55 and CD59) expression in thyroid tissues from HT, GD, PTC, and control groups were examined by IHC. Sixteen patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome, verified according to the Copenhagen criteria, were investigated for evidence of complement activation.
