Localized Trichiasis Causing Focal Full-Thickness Corneal Edema, Endothelial Cell Loss, and Corneal Scarring Requiring Penetrating Keratoplasty.

The purpose of the study was to report a case of focal trichiasis causing full-thickness corneal edema, scarring, and endothelial cell loss requiring penetrating keratoplasty (PK). A 66-year-old male was referred for trichiasis of the right upper eyelid corresponding to an area of full-thickness corneal edema. No keratic precipitates or guttata was noted. Specular microscopy showed diffuse endothelial cell loss. He was treated with topical steroids and acyclovir with epilation of lashes. Anterior chamber paracentesis was negative for varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex

Predicting early postoperative corneal edema after phacoemulsification: A retrospective observational study.

This study aimed to develop and internally validate a multivariable prediction model for early postoperative corneal edema following phacoemulsification by integrating patient-related and intraoperative parameters. This retrospective cohort study included 912 consecutive eyes from 912 patients who underwent standard phacoemulsification at a tertiary ophthalmic center in Southwest China between January 2021 and January 2023. Early postoperative corneal edema was defined as either a ≥5% increase in central corneal thickness from baseline on postoperative day 1 or the presence of clinically signi

Detection of subclinical corneal edema in fuchs' dystrophy using galilei tomography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of the Galilei device in detecting and distinguishing subclinical corneal edema in patients with Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy (FED). METHODS: We divided the patients into three groups based on their FED Characteristics. FED patients with prominent clinical edema, FED patients with subclinical edema (transparent corneas with CCT > 550 μm) and FED patients with no edema (transparent corneas with CCT < 550 μm). We also included a group of healthy patients as a control. We evaluated pachymetry and posterior depression maps, recording the presence of three main para

Microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty in pseudophakic and aphakic corneal edema.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty for replacing diseased endothelium in pseudophakic and aphakic corneal edema. METHODS: Microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty was performed on 10 eyes with pseudophakic or aphakic corneal edema. A nasal hinged 130- to 250-microm-thick flap was created with an automated microkeratome. The underlying 7.0-mm trephined button of deep stroma and endothelium was substituted with the same size donor button prepared by removing a same-sized flap and trephination of the remaining donor bed. The d

Acute corneal edema in pellucid marginal degeneration or acute marginal keratoconus.

This article reports a case of bilateral corneal pellucid marginal degeneration. The right cornea had an acute hydrops. Both eyes underwent penetrating keratoplasty. A histopathological study of the corneal specimens was performed by light and electron microscopy. The histological changes observed on the right cornea showed breaks on Bowman's layer, edema and disorganization of the stromal collagen, and break of Descemet's membrane. The ultrastructural changes were similar to those observed in acute keratoconus, leading to the belief that these two corneal diseases are closely related.

Self-limiting corneal edema with multiple parallel lines on the endothelium (SCEMPLE).

The purpose of this study was to report the natural course and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) findings of five cases with unilateral self-limiting corneal edema and multiple parallel lines on the endothelium (SCEMPLE). This study is an observational case series. Five patients, who experienced a blurred vision due to SCEMPLE, were studied using slit-lamp examination and white-light IVCM (Confoscan 4; Nidek Technologies, Padova, Italy). IVCM of the linear deposits revealed characteristic hyperreflective material protruding between the endothelial cells. The lines also displayed spot-like hol

Corneal edema with hydrogel lenses and eye closure: effects of lens thickness.

Subjects wore hydrogel lenses of two different thicknesses (0.07 mm and 0.18 mm) on one eye and no lens on the other eye during 3-hour periods of eye closure. They developed more corneal edema (12.7%) with the thicker lenses than with the thinner lenses (7.9%) and more corneal edema with the thinner lenses than with no lens (0.9%). The results suggest that hydrogel lens thickness would have to be less than 20 nm to reduce corneal edema to levels that develop when the eyes are closed without a contact lens.

Central-to-peripheral corneal edema during wear of embedded-component contact lenses.

PURPOSE: With active investigation underway for embedded-circuit contact lenses, safe oxygen supply of these novel lenses remains a question. Central-to-peripheral corneal edema for healthy eyes during wear of soft contact (SCL) and scleral lenses (SL) with embedding components is assessed. METHODS: Various 2-dimensional (2D) designs of SL and SCL with embedded components are constructed on Comsol Multiphysics 5.5. Local corneal swelling associated with the designed lenses is determined by a recently developed 2D metabolic-swelling model. Settled central post-lens tear-film thicknesses (PoLTF

Corneal endothelial cell loss, cystoid macular edema, and iris-supported intraocular lenses.

Endothelial cell loss, persistent cystoid macular edema and a chronic low-grade uveitis may complicate intracapsular cataract extraction combined with iris supported intraocular lenses. Clinical examination of 19 eyes of 17 patients, at 1.1 to 5 years after cataract surgery, and correlation with wide field specular microscopy and fluorescein angiography, documents this problem. The mean central corneal endothelial cell count was 497 cells/mm2 (standard deviation, 119). In ten cases, focal edema was localized to the corneal periphery. Cystoid macular edema was present in all but one case. Inter
