The challenge of antibiotic selection in prosthetic joint infections due to Corynebacterium striatum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium striatum is a gram-positive facultative anaerobe found in the environment and human flora that has historically been considered a contaminant. More recently, Corynebacterium striatum has been implicated in human infections, including respiratory infections, endocarditis, and bone and joint infections, particularly those involving hardware or implanted devices. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man presented for washout of his left total knee arthroplasty following a revision 20 days prior. The patient underwent debridement of his left total knee and revision of the

Genomic analysis of two penicillin- and rifampin-resistant Corynebacterium rouxii strains isolated from cutaneous infections in dogs.

Although diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease, numerous cases are still reported around the world, as well as outbreaks in countries, including European ones. Species of the Corynebacterium diphtheriae complex are potentially toxigenic and, therefore, must be considered given the possible consequences, such as the circulation of clones and transmission of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes. Recently, Corynebacterium rouxii was characterized and included among the valid species of the complex. Therefore, two cases of C. rouxii infection arising from infections in domestic anima

Bloodstream and catheter-related infections due to different clones of multidrug-resistant and biofilm producer Corynebacterium striatum.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium striatum is an emerging multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen associated with immunocompromised and chronically ill patients, as well as nosocomial outbreaks. In this study, we characterized 23 MDR C. striatum isolated of bloodstream and catheter-related infections from a hospital of Rio de Janeiro. METHODS: C. striatum isolates were identified by 16S rRNA and rpoB genes sequencing. The dissemination of these isolates was accomplished by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). All isolates were submitted to antimicrobial susceptibility testing by disk diffusion and b

Prosthetic joint infection by Corynebacterium striatum: a case report on a rare and emerging pathogen.

Corynebacterium striatum, a non-diphtherial Gram-positive bacillus traditionally considered a skin commensal, is increasingly recognised as an opportunistic pathogen in device-associated infections. We report a polymicrobial prosthetic joint infection in a 73-year-old woman with prior bilateral total knee replacement. C. striatum was repeatedly isolated from synovial fluid and deep tissue samples with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The isolate was susceptible to glycopeptides and linezolid. The patient received intravenous teicoplanin and revision surgery

Is Corynebacterium striatum an emerging prosthetic joint infection pathogen and how should it be treated?

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of Corynebacterium striatum prosthetic joint infections (PJI) to determine if an increase has occurred recently. Moreover, susceptibility testing was conducted on C. striatum preserved isolates to determine antibiotic options for these infections. METHODS: Retrospective review of PJI cases was conducted from 1/2017 through 1/2021 compared to 1/2021 through 7/2022 to determine how many cases of C. striatum have occurred for each of these time points. From these cases, demographics, outcomes and risk factors for C. striatum PJI wer

Corynebacterium striatum Prosthetic Joint Infection Successfully Treated with Long-Term Dalbavancin.

Arthroplasty surgery is a common procedure that significantly improves quality of life. The most feared complication is prosthetic joint infection (PJI), which occurs more often following revision surgery. Staphylococci are the most prevalent bacteria in PJIs, although many other pathogens have been reported. We describe a case of PJI in a 75-year-old farmer following revision surgery caused by Corynebacterium striatum, an unusual agent which normally occurs in the normal human skin microbiota with perceived low pathogenicity. Following a cemented right-sided total hip arthroplasty in 2006, a

A papular eruption secondary to infection with Corynebacterium jeikeium, with histopathological features mimicking botryomycosis.

Corynebacterium jeikeium has been increasingly recognized as a pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised patients and in those with a prosthetic heart valve. Although cutaneous manifestations of C. jeikeium infection have been described, we have only found two case reports that give an histological description of the lesions. We present three patients with haematological malignancies who developed infection with C. jeikeium and a papular eruption. Skin biopsy disclosed similar histological features in all three patients, namely numerous Gram-positive bacteria enclosed in an eosinophilic matr

Infective endocarditis due to nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae: report of seven cases and review.

We report seven cases of endocarditis due to nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae that occurred between October 1990 and September 1991. The patients all lived in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Three patients had preexisting cardiac abnormalities, and one patient used intravenous drugs regularly. The other three patients had no known risk factors for endocarditis. Notable clinical features were the aggressive nature of the infection, the occurrence of septic arthritis in four patients, and major vascular complications in four patients, one of whom died. One patient required urgen

[Urinary tract infection caused by Corynebacterium sp.--a case report and an experimental study].

We repose of chronic cystitis associated with alkali urine, struvite stones and a subsequent vesicorectal fistula caused by Corynebacterium sp, probably Corynebacterium group D2. We also studied in vitro and in vivo stone formation caused by Corynebacterium renale isolated clinically. C. renale inoculated into normal human urine increased urine pH and formed struvite crystals after a 24-hr incubation. Bladder stones were also formed in rats experimentally infected by C. renale as well as P. mirabilis. Some urea splitting species of Corynebacterium such as C. group D2 and C. renale may play a r

Infective endocarditis due to non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae in a child. A case report.

A case of infective endocarditis (IE) in a 5 1/2-year-old boy in whom blood and bone marrow cultures yielded an unusual organism, a non-toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is reported. This proved fatal, and at autopsy congenital valvar aortic stenosis was found, but the vegetations occurred on an anatomically normal mitral valve. Organisms such as C. diphtheriae should not be ignored when isolated from blood cultures in suspected cases of IE.

Induction of resistance to ectromelia virus infection by corynebacterium parvum in murine peritoneal macrophages.

An in vitro model has been developed to study the replication of ectromelia virus in murine macrophages (M phi). Infection of mineral oil-elicited peritoneal M phi cultures with either the virulent (Moscow) or attenuated (Hampstead) strain of ectromelia virus led to productive infections. The kinetics of virus synthesis was similar to those seen following infection of murine fibroblasts. In contrast, peritoneal M phi s activated by intraperitoneal injection of Corynebacterium parvum vaccine were found to be totally refractory to infection by the attenuated strain and significantly more resista

Corynebacterium striatum Infective Endocarditis from Different Perspectives: A Comprehensive Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Corynebacterium striatum infective endocarditis (IE) is rare but increasingly recognized. Delays in the diagnosis and treatment of subacute IE caused by C. striatum are possible. In patients with predisposing risk factors, it is essential to carefully review clinical history and imaging findings before dismissing C. striatum isolated from repeated blood cultures as a contaminant. This study aimed to present two cases of C. striatum IE and to review all published cases in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case reports describing C. striatum IE were identified through PubMed, Sc

Complicated urinary tract infection caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum - A pathogen that should not be forgotten.

Although Corynebacterium urealyticum has rarely been isolated in diagnostic laboratories, this bacterium can be a significant uropathogen causing significant complications. It causes cystitis and alkaline encrusted cystitis, commonly involved in patients who need prolonged hospitalization and bladder catheterisation. We report here a case of a 19-yearold young man who was diagnosed with N-Methyl Daspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis that requires hospitalization for optimization of rehabilitation treatment in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His urine culture isolated slow growing gram-posi

Non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae infective endocarditis with embolic events: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae) infections, usually related to upper airways involvement, could be highly invasive. Especially in developing countries, non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae strains are now emerging as cause of invasive disease like endocarditis. The present case stands out for reinforcing the high virulence of this pathogen, demonstrated by the multiple systemic embolism and severe valve deterioration. It also emphasizes the importance of a coordinated interdisciplinary work to address all these challenges related to infectious endocarditis. CASE PRESENTATION:

Corynebacterium diphtheriae-infective endocarditis in a patient with an atrial septal defect closure device.

An 18-year-old woman presented to our institution with fever, bilateral flank pain, headache and photophobia. She had a previous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure device inserted at the age of 9 years. Blood cultures on admission were positive for Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) revealed an echodensity associated with the ASD closure device, most consistent with a vegetation. She was treated for infective endocarditis with 6 weeks of intravenous benzylpenicillin, and follow-up TOE showed resolution of the echodensity. To our knowledge, no cases of C. dip

Is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection (pigeon fever) in horses an emerging disease in western Canada?

This report describes 5 horses in the southern Alberta region with typical and atypical external abscessation due to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (pigeon fever). "Pigeon fever" has recently been diagnosed in new geographic regions in North America and should be kept as a differential diagnosis by practitioners when an external or internal abscess is identified in a horse.
