Exploring the Idea of Human Reproduction in Space: A Potential Area for Future Research.

As space travel evolves from brief missions to longer expeditions, and with the rise of space tourism, there is increasing interest in understanding how space travel affects human reproductive physiology and the feasibility of procreation in space. Space travel presents various potential hazards to reproductive health such as exposure to ionizing radiation, exposure to changes in gravity, psychological stress, and disruptions to the endocrine and urogenital systems, as well as the circadian rhythm. This article explores how cosmic radiation and microgravity impact both female and male gametoge

First evaluation of wearable radiation protection for human deep space exploration, as flown on Artemis I.

With preparations underway for extended-duration crewed deep space missions, the health risks of solar particle events (SPEs) to astronauts are becoming increasingly pertinent. To address this hazard, the AstroRad vest, a personal radiation shielding garment providing targeted organ protection, was tested during Artemis I. Two anthropomorphic female phantoms, equipped with internal and external passive and active dosimeters, were flown aboard the Orion spacecraft: one unshielded and the other wearing AstroRad. Inner Van Allen belt transit active dosimeter measurements were extrapolated to simu

Comprehensive database of track-structure simulations on DNA damage by H-Fe ions up to 1 GeV/u for space radiation biology.

Understanding biological effects of high-charge, high-energy (HZE) particles is critical for evaluating health risks of long-duration deep-space missions. To complement the scarce experimental data, PARTRAC track-structure simulations are reported on DNA damage induction by magnesium, silicon, calcium, titanium and iron ions with energies from 1 MeV/u to 1 GeV/u, abundant in space radiation. In addition, previous simulations for hydrogen to neon ions are extended to 1 GeV/u. The simulation results reproduce reference stopping power data. Simulated DNA damage yields agree with pulsed-field gel

Convergent 3-6 kHz cochlear vulnerability in aircrew: matching threshold sound conditioning targets to operational flight profiles.

Commercial and military aircrew operate within a multi-hazard auditory environment that combines cabin acoustic noise, chronic hypobaric hypoxia under regulatory cabin-pressure caps, and altitude-dependent cosmic ionizing radiation. Their convergent action on cochlear vulnerability has not been quantified, and no decision framework exists for matching threshold sound conditioning (TSC) target frequencies to operational flight profiles. This work is a computational, hypothesis-generating framework rather than an empirical study. We propose that the dominant frequency band of cochlear vulnerabil

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight.

Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes - fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal development - each of which needs to be completed successfully, and each of which has a probability of success. The effects of the environment of interplanetary flight - microgravity and galactic cosmic rays (GCR) - on these probabilities are inferred from Eart

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 443: Air travel during pregnancy.

In the absence of obstetric or medical complications, pregnant women can observe the same precautions for air travel as the general population and can fly safely. Pregnant women should be instructed to continuously use their seat belts while seated, as should all air travelers. Pregnant air travelers may take precautions to ease in-flight discomfort and, although no hard evidence exists, preventive measures can be used to minimize risks of venous thrombosis. For most air travelers, the risks to the fetus from exposure to cosmic radiation are negligible. For pregnant aircrew members and other f

Cancer risk from exposure to galactic cosmic rays: implications for space exploration by human beings.

Space programmes are shifting toward planetary exploration, and in particular towards missions by human beings to the moon and Mars. However, exposure to space radiation is an important barrier to exploration of the solar system by human beings because of the biological effects of high-energy heavy ions. These ions have a high charge and energy, are the main contributors to radiation risk in deep space, and their biological effects are understood poorly. Predictions of the nature and magnitude of risks posed by exposure to radiation in space are subject to many uncertainties. In recent years,

Dose simulation for the MATROSHKA-R experiment onboard the international space station using a high-fidelity model of the Zvezda module.

The MATROSHKA-R experiment conducted onboard the International Space Station provided invaluable data on depth-dose distributions for critical human organs exposed to the low Earth orbit (LEO) radiation environment. In this study, a high-fidelity computational model of a tissue-equivalent spherical phantom and a refined geometric representation of the Zvezda module were developed using the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. In contrast to previous studies that relied on simplified cylindrical crew module models, our approach successfully and simultaneously reproduced the measured dose distributions i

Cytogenetic studies of blood lymphocytes from cosmonauts after long-term space flights on Mir station.

Long-term space missions may increase risks of unfavorable consequences for cosmonauts as a result of radiation effects. This paper presents results of a study of cytogenetic damage in cosmonauts' peripheral blood lymphocytes induced by space radiation. Cultivation of lymphocytes and analysis of chromosomal aberrations were made according to generally accepted methods. It is shown that the yields of dicentrics and centric rings scored after long-term space flights are considerably higher than those scored prior to the flights. An attempt was made to assess individual doses received by cosmonau

Modelling radiation adaptive response in space radiation risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation.

Uncertainty surrounding the biological effects of chronic low-dose radiation remains an important challenge in radiation risk assessment, particularly for long-duration space missions. Although adaptive response has been proposed as a potential modifier of radiation-induced cancer risk, its impact on mission-level risk predictions has not been quantitatively evaluated. We developed an exploratory Monte Carlo framework that extends a conventional linear no-threshold-based cancer risk model by incorporating an adaptive response factor (RAF) parameterised by a maximum protection fraction (), a ha

3D Bioprinting in Microgravity: Opportunities, Challenges, and Possible Applications in Space.

3D bioprinting has developed tremendously in the last couple of years and enables the fabrication of simple, as well as complex, tissue models. The international space agencies have recognized the unique opportunities of these technologies for manufacturing cell and tissue models for basic research in space, in particular for investigating the effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation on different types of human tissues. In addition, bioprinting is capable of producing clinically applicable tissue grafts, and its implementation in space therefore can support the autonomous medical treatment

Carcinogenesis induced by space radiation: A systematic review.

The carcinogenic risk from space radiation has always been a health risk issue of great concern during space exploration. In recent years, a large number of cellular and animal experiments have demonstrated that space radiation, composed of high-energy protons and heavy ions, has shown obvious carcinogenicity. However, different from radiation on Earth, space radiation has the characteristics of high energy and low dose rate. It is rich in high-atom-number and high-energy particles and, as it is combined with other space environmental factors such as microgravity and a weak magnetic field, the

Organ dose conversion factors for murine galactic cosmic ray irradiation.

UNLABELLED: Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) are a principal source of ionizing radiation exposure for astronauts during deep space missions. Given the ambition to expand manned space exploration to distant destinations like Mars, it is essential to accurately predict the radiation doses astronauts are likely to encounter and the consequent biological impacts. Accurate dose predictions are important for operational radiation safety, ensuring that risk assessments and protective measures are appropriately calibrated to the myriad of challenges of deep space travel. A conceptual design for cosmo-biology experiments in Earth's Orbit.

A conceptual design was developed for a cosmo-biology experiment. It is intended to expose simulated interstellar ice materials deposited on dust grains to the space environment. The experimental system consists of a cryogenic system to keep solidified gas sample, and an optical device to select and amplify the ultraviolet part of the solar light for irradiation. By this approach, the long lasting chemical evolution of icy species could be examined in a much shorter time of exposure by amplification of light intensity. The removal of light at longer wavelength, which is ineffective to induce p

On the effect of ionizing radiation upon the retina in man and animals.

The phenomenon of light flashes observed by the American cosmonauts on exposure to primary cosmic radiation during translunar flights, and also perceived by other observers on exposure of the eye to neutrons from accelerators, is indeed one of the latest manifestations of the sensitivity of the retina to very high energy radiation. The usual interpretations of this phenomenon are based either on the hypothesis of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation in the ocular media, or on the direct stimulation of photoreceptors in the retina itself. The data available are submitted to adequate analysis, the experi

Mortality from cancer and other causes among airline cabin attendants in Europe: a collaborative cohort study in eight countries.

There is concern about the health effects of exposure to cosmic radiation during air travel. To study the potential health effects of this and occupational exposures, the authors investigated mortality patterns among more than 44,000 airline cabin crew members in Europe. A cohort study was performed in eight European countries, yielding approximately 655,000 person-years of follow-up. Observed numbers of deaths were compared with expected numbers based on national mortality rates. Among female cabin crew, overall mortality (standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI

Irradiation with a mixed heavy ion beam induces ovarian follicle loss and dose-dependent mixed ovarian tumor development.

Over 25% of active NASA astronauts are women who will be exposed to low daily doses and dose rates of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) in space. We hypothesized that exposing mice to a preliminary simulated GCR mixed heavy ion beam composed of iron, silicon, and titanium ions induces follicle depletion and dose-dependent ovarian tumors. Female mice were exposed to 10, or 20 cGy each of Fe, Si, and Ti ions or sham-irradiation in quick succession within 15 min for total doses of 0, 30, or 60 cGy of the three beams. 16 months later, their ovaries were removed. Hyperplasia of the ovarian surface epithel

Space radiation health risks to hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal systems in astronauts.

The rapid progress in global deep space exploration presents astronauts with a complex space radiation environment that substantially exceeds that of near-Earth orbit. Space radiation primarily consists of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events (SPEs), which exhibit strong penetrative capability and considerable biological damaging potential. These factors may induce persistent oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA double-strand breaks, and repair pathway challenges. This review examines the impacts of space radiation on the hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal

Adverse Outcome Pathways Applied to Space Radiation Research.

Long-duration spaceflight exposes astronauts to various stressors that can alter human physiology, potentially causing immediate and long-term health effects. These stressors can damage biomolecules, cells, tissues, and organs, leading to adverse outcomes. Developing adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) relevant to radiation exposure can guide research priorities and inform risk assessments of future space exploration activities. Through expert consultation, we developed an AOP network linking 18 key events (KEs) to four non-cancer outcomes: learning and memory impairment, bone loss, abnormal vascu

Loss of Cognitive Flexibility Practice Effects in Female Rats Exposed to Simulated Space Radiation.

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents. This study has determined the impact that exposure to a low (10 cGy) dose of ions from
