BACKGROUND: The last-line agent for gram-negative bacteria that have developed resistance towards commonly used antibiotics is polymyxin E (PolyE). The renal toxicity attributed to this agent limits its use, proper dosing, and eventually its clinical efficacy. Although the exact mechanism of PolyE-induced nephrotoxicity is not obvious, some investigations suggest the role of oxidative stress and its associated events in this complication. Curcumin (CUR) is a potent antioxidant molecule. The aim of the current investigation was the evaluation of the potential nephroprotective properties of CUR

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. Such diseases mostly develop in tropical and sub-tropical climates and represent major health challenges. The pathogens of these diseases are able to multiply in human hosts, warranting their continual survival. Prevention of these diseases is becoming extremely difficult due to the absence of effective vaccines and their treatment, less effective due to the emergence of resistance by their causative pathogens to existing drugs. Several currently available drugs employ oxidative stress,

Curcumin, an agent traditionally utilized for its preventative action against tumorigenesis, oxidation, inflammation, apoptosis and hyperlipemia, has also been used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent advances in the study of AD have revealed astrocytes (AS) as being key factors in the early pathophysiological changes in AD. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker specific to AS, is markedly more manifest during morphological modifications and neural degeneration signature during the onset of AD. Several studies investigating the functionality of curcumin have shown t

Curcumin (diferuoyl methane) from turmeric is a well-known biologically active compound. It has been shown to ameliorate oxidative stress and it is considered to be a potent cancer chemopreventive agent. In our previous study the antioxidative effects of curcumin in cadmium exposed animals were demonstrated. Also manganese exerts protective effects in experimental cadmium intoxication. The present study examined the ability of the manganese complex of curcumin (Mn-curcumin) and curcumin to protect against oxidative damage and changes in trace element status in cadmium-intoxicated male mice. Zebrafish larvae have been widely used in neuroscience and drug research and development. In the larval stage, zebrafish present a broad behavioral repertoire and physiological responses similar to adults. Curcumin (CUR), a major component of Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), has demonstrated the ability to modulate several neurobiological processes relevant to mental disorders in animal models. However, the low bioavailability of this compound can compromise its in vivo biological potential. Interestingly, it has been shown that micronization can increase the biological effects of several com

Chromatin remodeling, particularly histone acetylation, plays a critical role in the progression of pathological cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. We hypothesized that curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound abundant in the spice turmeric and a known suppressor of histone acetylation, would suppress cardiac hypertrophy through the disruption of p300 histone acetyltransferase-dependent (p300-HAT-dependent) transcriptional activation. We tested this hypothesis using primary cultured rat cardiac myocytes and fibroblasts as well as two well-established mouse models of cardiac hypertrophy. C

The use of polysaccharide Pickering emulsions for delivering bioactive compounds has attracted significant attention recently. However, the destabilizing effects of bioactive compounds on these emulsions remain largely unexplored, limiting the development of high-performance delivery systems. This study investigates how curcumin loading affects the stability and delivery performance of Lycium barbarum leaf polysaccharide Pickering emulsions. Curcumin loading significantly destabilizes these emulsions, reducing stability indices of mineral-containing emulsions from 92.3 %-94.8 % (unloaded) to 3

Natural plant-derived compounds are widely used as therapeutics in various human pathophysiological disorders. Among them, curcumin has attracted significant interest in medicinal chemistry due to its extensive biological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective activities. While the phenolic hydroxyl groups are essential for its antioxidant profile, the central β-diketone moiety significantly limits its therapeutic application due to poor bioavailability and rapid metabolism. Although several attempts to mask this group

Infections caused by Candida species have considerably increased in recent decades. However, the antifungal agents for the treatment of candidiasis are restricted to few classes of drugs, which have some therapeutic limitations, including high toxicity, low efficacy and resistance development. This perspective encouraged us to synthesize and evaluate a series of simplified analogs inspired by curcumin, a natural product with recognized antifungal activity. Among tested antifungal compounds, 3-hydroxy-dibenzylideneacetone (17) was the most active one against Candida species, with Minimum Inhibi

Turmeric is a common spice obtained from the rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae (ginger family). The rhizome is a horizontally growing stem that sends roots and shoots from below ground. Turmeric has many uses, including spice, food preservation, flavor enhancement, and coloring. Also, it is used in conventional medicine as a home treatment for many diseases. Turmeric obtains its yellow color from curcuminoids, polyphenolic pigments that dissolve in fat. The primary curcuminoid form in turmeric is curcumin or diferuloylmethane (1,7-bis (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphen
