PURPOSE: To compare and repeatedly measure cycloplegic refraction in a cross-section of children using retinoscopy and automated refraction.
METHODS: A total of 560 children (corresponding to 1120 eyes) ranging in age from 3 to 10 years participated in the study. Each child underwent a comprehensive eye examination, which included table mounted autorefractor evaluation (Kowa KW-2000) and streak retinoscopy, both after cycloplegia with 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride. Data were analyzed using Fourier decomposition of the power profile.

It is important to predict which astigmatic patients require separate refraction for near vision. This study compared cylindrical components changes by cyclopentolate 1% for the low and high amount of astigmatism. The right eyes of 1014 healthy individuals (307 males and 707 females) with cylindrical refractive power more than -0.5 diopter on autorefractometer were selected. In order to normalize the condition of pseudomyopia, the following can be summarized: One percent cyclopentolate was effective in 63%, and 0.4% tropicamide was effective in 59% of the cases. With a value of 68% after labetalol eye drops there were no significant differences in efficacy between this drug and the above cycloplegics. A 25-year femalepresented at the eye OPD with the complaint of some white thing in her right eye. She had visual acuity of 6/18 in the right eye and 6/6 in the left one. Slit lamp examination showed she had a live larva actively moving in the anterior chamber of the right eye. The patient was started on oral steroid, topical moxifloxacin with steroid, cyclopentolate and planned for surgery. Exploration of lerva was done by visco-expressive method. Histopathology showed if to be a cysticercus lerva. Her visual acurity was 6/6 in the affected eye after one month.

Hong Kong Chinese infants were refracted by retinoscopy at regular intervals between the age of approximately 10 and 40 weeks. Cyclopentolate 1% was used to obtain cycloplegia.
