It is well-known that the development of a malignant tumor in a chronic burn scar is one of the long-term complications of a severe burn. Most of these tumors are squamous cell carcinomas, and sarcomas are much rarely seen in chronic burn scars. In the previous literature, 24 cases of burn scar sarcomas were reported. The authors report the second case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans arising in a chronic, severe burn scar. A 68-year-old woman with a reddish tumor in the right axilla was referred to the authors' hospital. The patient had sustained severe burns in the right axilla, upper arm,

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare cutaneous sarcoma characterized by marked local invasiveness and a low but definite risk of metastasis. The biological basis for this discrepancy remains incompletely understood. This review synthesizes current evidence regarding local invasion, metastatic behavior, tumor microenvironment, vascular and lymphatic involvement, and the role of the collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1)-platelet-derived growth factor beta (PDGFB) fusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted, prioritizing PubM

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare, slow-growing cutaneous sarcoma that presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This case report refers to a 47-year-old female patient who presented to the dermatologist with a stable, asymptomatic, firm lesion located on the proximal lower extremity. Local surgical excision was performed, and the specimen was sent for biopsy, where histopathological analysis, along with immunohistochemistry, confirmed the diagnosis of DFSP. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis was also conducted, serving a supportive role in the detection of

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare sarcoma of the dermis. It is a malignant, locally aggressive, and infiltrative tumor with frequent recurrence. In this case, a 44-year-old woman presented with a 15-year history of a swelling in the medial canthus of the right eye that caused tearing. Imaging revealed a septated mass isodense to soft tissue that had eroded the medial wall of the orbit. Macroscopic examination showed an elastic, gray-brown, encapsulated, irregular mass measuring 45x35x22 mm. The surgical margins were positive, so adjuvant radiotherapy was started. The patient was

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is rare, comprising (1%-6%) of all sarcomas. The incidence is less than one per million before the age of 20. It is a locally aggressive tumor with a low risk of metastasis. We share our experience in the management of three pediatric patients with complex cases of DFSP in a combined surgical approach involving plastic and dermatologic surgery, using the slow Mohs micrographic surgery technique.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a low-grade sarcoma typically originating in the dermis but with local invasion of subcutaneous cell and muscle tissue. We report a case of perianal dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in a 41-year-old male complaining of anal pain and constipation. To date, only two cases of perianal dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans have been reported. The unusual location hinders surgical treatment. The characteristic translocation t(17;22)(q22;q13) leading to the formation of COL1A1/PDGFβ fusion transcripts is not only of diagnostic value but also enables an alternative imatini

The aim of this study was to analyze the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), with a view to improving the diagnosis of this kind of tumor. A total of 27 cases of histopathologically confirmed DFSP were analyzed retrospectively. Of these, 18 patients underwent a CT scan and 9 patients underwent an MRI. All patients underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced examinations; 1 patient underwent multiphrase CT enhancement examination. Imaging characteristics, including location, shape, size, number, edge, and attenuation o

Only few cases of scalp dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with intracranial and distant metastasis have been reported. Here we report a case of scalp dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with frequent local recurrence, intracranial invasion and with distant lung metastasis during 6 years of treatment. We would like to emphasize difficulties in surgical treatment of such invasive and locally recurrent tumors of scalp, and necessity to understand new molecular pathogenesis of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and potential treatment strategy with imatinib for patients with surgically untreatable disease.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon, slow growing and locally aggressive tumor of the skin with a high rate of recurrence even after supposedly wide excision. The reports of regional lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis are very rare. Because of the extreme rarity of these cases with metastasis, the experience with management of such patients is very limited. A case of recurrent DFSP of scalp, with metastasis to the regional lymph nodes, in a 17-year-old boy is reported here. This is the second case of DFSP involving scalp and 16th case of DFSP of all sites metastasiz

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-grade spindle cell neoplasm involving both dermis and subcutis. Its diagnosis may be difficult to render from cytologic smears, as it shares some features with other spindle cell lesions occurring in the skin and soft tissue.
METHODS: Fourteen aspiration smears from 12 patients with primary, recurrent, or metastatic DFSP, examined by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), were reviewed and compared with corresponding surgical specimens (13 aspirates) and clinical data (one aspirate). The cytologic features of DFSP were evaluated. Othe

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a slow growing, locally invasive tumour whose differentiation from other fibrohistiocytic tumours sometimes poses serious diagnostic problems. We investigated CD34 expression immunohistologically in various fibrohistiocytic tumours including dermatofibroma, DFSP, malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), infantile myofibromatosis, fibrosarcoma, hypertrophic scar and keloid. Among these, DFSP was unique in that tumour cells themselves expressed CD34, whereas in other tumours. CD34 expression was observed only on vascular endothelial cells amongst the tumour

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon malignant spindle-cell tumor usually presenting in adulthood. The epidemiology of DFSP has recently been reviewed, and there have been 152 reported cases of DFSP in patients below the age of sixteen. We present the case of a DFSP arising in a young patient with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS).

A 49-year-old man presented with a rare dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) of the scalp associated with local recurrence and distant metastasis to the lung and abdomen. An elastic-hard small mass on the right occipital scalp was initially treated by simple resection in another clinic. Ten years later, recurrent tumor was associated with infiltration to the calvarium, and resection was performed again also in another clinic. Approximately 1.5 years later, the patient was transferred to our clinic because of recurrence with intracranial involvement. Repeated relapses and metastasis to the lu

The histological distinction between dermatofibroma (DF) and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) may be extremely difficult. CD34 and Factor XIIIa have been used to differentiate DF from DFSP. However, there is an overlap and relative lack of specificity of their expressions. CD44 is a widely distributed integral membrane glycoprotein, which is expressed as a multitude of isoforms generated by alternative splicing of at least 10 different variant exons and post-translational modifications. CD44 is currently thought to be the principal cell surface receptor for hyaluronate (HA), the major co
