OBJECTIVES: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment for people with emerging borderline personality disorder (BPD). In "real world" clinical settings, standard DBT is resource intensive. Emerging evidence suggests that group-based DBT skills training alone can lead to promising outcomes. This hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation trial directly compared the effectiveness of an 8-week group DBT-skills training program and a 16-week DBT-informed program including individual treatment and group-based skills training.
METHODS: This pragmatic trial employed a stagger

Radically open dialectical behaviour therapy (RO DBT) is a transdiagnostic treatment, originally developed as a variant of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), that emerged as a novel treatment approach for those presenting with excessive or maladaptive overcontrol. Despite RO DBT's growing popularity among clinicians as a treatment for chronic depression, personality disorders and eating disorders, to date, no systematic review has been conducted to summarise the evidence on this therapy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to provide a current and com

OBJECTIVE: Disorders related to overcontrol frequently first appear during adolescence, are highly comorbid, and show limited treatment response, necessitating the adaptation of radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT; a transdiagnostic treatment targeting overcontrol) for adolescents (RO DBT-A). This study tested the preliminary efficacy of telehealth-delivered RO DBT-A in a heterogeneous clinical sample of youths.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 female participants ages 13-21 with elevated overcontrol; most were White (75%) and non-Hispanic/Latino (80%). RO DBT-A was provide

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has demonstrated effectiveness for a range of emotional difficulties, and DBT skills training groups may be necessary to produce symptom change. However, it is unclear how skills training groups influence outcomes. Specifically, is participation in DBT skills modules associated with general effects (i.e., changes in multiple domains) or domain-specific effects (i.e., changes in the conceptually relevant domain)? Participants recruited from a university training clinic (n = 87; 75.9% diagnosed with borderline personality disorder) participated in standard DBT

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a significant psychiatric illness for which medication treatments are still being explored. The goal of this study was to assess divalproex extended release (ER) vs placebo for patients receiving dialectal behavior therapy (DBT).
METHODS: Patients with BPD received 4 weeks of "condensed DBT." Those with Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) scores >150 after this treatment were then randomly and blindly assigned to placebo or divalproex ER for 12 weeks. Repeated measures analysis of variance utilizing last observation carried forward was used to as

IMPORTANCE: Current therapeutic approaches are inaccessible to many people with chronic pain and frequently fail to address emotion dysregulation as a key factor in psychological comorbidity and pain intensity. An effective and accessible emotion regulation-focused intervention is needed.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of online dialectical behavioral therapy for chronic pain plus treatment as usual (iDBT-Pain) with only treatment as usual on emotion dysregulation in people with chronic pain.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether pre-treatment cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, indexed by heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) predicts clinical outcome and therapy drop-outs in adolescents with borderline personality (BPD) pathology receiving dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT-A). We further tested for an association between changes in ANS function and clinical outcome over time. Traumatic experiences were considered as potential confounding factor.
METHODS: N = 43 (95.4% female, Mage = 15.5 years) adolescents fulfilling at least sub-threshold criter

Standard treatments for adolescent eating disorders, such as family-based treatment (FBT), may be insufficient for patients presenting with severe emotion dysregulation and co-occurring pathologies. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets affect regulation and may therefore offer a viable alternative or adjunctive intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of DBT and DBT-informed interventions, including those integrated with FBT, for adolescents with eating disorders characterized by binge eating episodes. A systematic literature search was conducted across four databases in a

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and family-based treatment (FBT) are two evidence-based interventions that have been applied in the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN) in adolescents. While DBT focuses on providing skills for coping with emotion dysregulation that often co-occurs with BN, FBT targets the normalization of eating patterns. The purpose of the current article is to introduce an integration of both treatments to provide a more comprehensive approach that targets the full scope of the disorder. We provide a review of the conceptual similarities and differences between FBT-BN and DB

This article presents a case study of a 31-year-old woman with a dual diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). Paula received a 12-month Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) outpatient treatment. DBT is considered a transdiagnostic treatment approach to address emotion dysregulation, which shifts the therapy focus traditionally placed only on behavioral change toward including also validation and acceptance and dialectical strategies. DBT addresses eating symptomatology as a dysfunctional form of emotional regulation and has shown pr

Research has indicated the effectiveness of Dialectical behavior therapy in adolescents (DBT-A) with severe emotion dysregulation and other symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The objective was to determine if DBT skills group with caregivers only could influence in potential mediators of DBT outcomes including rearing styles, emotion regulation and mindfulness skills, evaluated in both parents and adolescents. We implemented a 12-week group intervention based on DBT-A addressed to seven parents of adolescents with features of BPD. We tested differences after treatment using the

PURPOSE: Individuals with eating disorders (ED) and comorbid borderline personality disorder (BPD) may benefit from therapies focusing on emotion regulation, such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of one-year standard DΒΤ enhanced with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies for patients suffering from ED and BPD.
METHODS: Seventy-two BPD and ED (anorexia and bulimia nervosa) participants were recruited from the eating disorders unit of the 1st Psychiatric Department of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. All part

Despite the effectiveness of CBT in reducing shape/weight concerns and dietary restraint, research suggests that patients considered recovered may still exhibit emotional difficulties related to eating disorders (EDs). Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has been adapted for a variety of mental disorders characterized by emotion dysregulation and, more recently, for EDs specifically. The current review found that the majority of the research studies employed one of the following three adaptations of DBT for EDs: The Stanford Model, Radically Open-DBT (RO-DBT), or Multidiagnostic ED-DBT (MED-DBT

PURPOSE: Digital mental health interventions could improve population health. However, our understanding of how to improve their effectiveness through personalization is limited. We describe the outcomes of a micro-randomized trial (MRT) of a 60-day text messaging program, delivered during the final stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyze the effects of 6 different types of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) messages, and examine whether socio-demographic, health-related, and contextual factors (eg, timing of sending a message) moderate effectivenes

BACKGROUND: In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), monitoring inner tension and state dissociation is considered helpful for understanding a patient’s affective and behavioral responses, especially regarding self-harming behaviors. This study aims to investigate how potentially aversive internal states including dissociation, inner tension and fluctuations of tension, i.e. affective instability, during the initial phase of inpatient DBT relate to self-injury, suicidal ideation, and symptom reduction. METHODS: 41 patients with personality disorder (borderline or combined), undergoing an 8-week

BACKGROUND: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), originally designed for emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), has shown effective overall, but its specific effect on depression and anger expression stays underexplored.
OBJECTIVES: This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes controlled trials analyzing the impact of standard DBT on post-treatment depression and anger expression among adults having BPD.
METHODS: This study performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science through February 24, 2025, for randomized and high-quality non-randomized trial

Six-month follow-up results from a trial investigating the effects of Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) in individuals with anorexia nervosa are presented. Participants (N = 23; median age 20 years; 96% female) completed a 32-week RO-DBT intervention. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to examine changes over time. The primary outcome was eating disorder psychopathology. Exploratory outcomes were BMI, obsessive-compulsive personality traits, emotion regulation, work function and treatment utilization. Statistically significant reductions in eating disorder psychopathology, a

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing interest in identifying mediators in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), particularly within the broader DBT framework and the specific skills taught in group-based interventions. This study examined whether three core DBT skills-emotion regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance- mediate the relationship between group therapy participation and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in university students. It was hypothesized that improvements in these skills would mediate treatment outcomes, reflecting their role in driving therapeutic change.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUD) are debilitating conditions that frequently co-occur with other mental disorders. Internet-delivered dialectical behavior therapy (iDBT) skills training may be promising for SUD; however, little research has examined predictors of engagement and treatment outcome. Methods: This is a secondary, exploratory analysis of a randomized, waitlist-controlled trial of self-guided iDBT for SUD. Participants (N = 72) were allocated to an immediate or delayed arm, with the latter receiving access after 4 weeks. All participants were followed for 12 weeks total. Th
