Evaluating Primitive Reflexes in Early Childhood as a Potential Biomarker for Developmental Disabilities.

We aim to understand better the significance of retained primitive reflexes (RPRs) and examine the effect of RPRs in children, adolescents, and adults, focusing on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as examine a basis for future treatment alternatives. We included a history section to better recognise the way that the scientific and medical communities have studied and understood the importance of RPRs. We review findings indicating that aspects of these disorders are related to the presence of functional disconnectivities related to a cortical matu

Evaluation of children with mild intellectual disabilities' self-perceptions of family functioning.

While the influence of family on individuals with intellectual disabilities is acknowledged, there remains a limited understanding of their perceptions of family. Gaining insight into these perceptions is crucial for developing effective support initiatives. This study examined the perspectives of 18 high school students with mild intellectual disabilities attending Turkish public schools during the 2023-2024 academic year. Through semi-structured interviews and content analysis, themes emerged regarding students' views on family roles, relationships and emotions. Students predominantly define

Evaluating a Novel Disability Education and Awareness Event for Health Professions Trainees.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at high risk for unmet health care needs and face barriers to equitable care, yet few health professions students receive adequate training to meet these needs. OBJECTIVES: An interactive panel discussion with Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) athletes and staff was planned and implemented so that health professions students/trainees would gain knowledge of IDD, health barriers, SOPA resources, and volunteer opportunities. METHODS: Panelists included two SOPA athletes and their mentors; questions solicited respo

A Systematic Review to Evaluate the Barriers to Breast Cancer Screening in Women with Disability.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. There are observed disparities in patients with disability as compared to those without disability, which leads to poor BC screening attendance, thereby worsening disease management. Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate if there are disparities in screening rates in women with disability as compared to those without disability, as well as the different factors that pose barriers to patients with disability for enrolment in BC screening programs. Method: Using the Preferred Reporting Items fo

Experimental Evaluation of EMKEY: An Assistive Technology for People with Upper Limb Disabilities.

Assistive technology can help people with disabilities to use computers more effectively and can enable them to access the same information and resources as people without disabilities. To obtain more insight into the factors that can bring about the design of an Emulator of Mouse and Keyboard (EMKEY) to higher levels of user satisfaction, an experimental study was conducted in order to analyse its effectiveness and efficiency. The experimental study involved 27 participants (Mage = 20.81, SD = 1.14) who performed three experimental games under different conditions (using the mouse and using E

Validity of the Global Activity Limitation Indicator (GALI) to evaluate severity of disability.

Our aim was to estimate the validity of the Global Activity Limitation Indicator (GALI) when measuring the severity level of disability. Data came from 153 residents of Spain, who requested an evaluation of their degree of disability. We compared disability classifications (severe vs. non-severe) from GALI against those from the 36-item questionnaire WHODAS 2.0, the current gold standard measure of disability. The sensitivity of GALI to detect severe disability was 58.3% [95% confidence interval (CI):43.2-72.4], and the specificity was 84.8% (95% CI: 76.4-91.0). Thus, the validity of GALI to a

Consensus Statement of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics on Evaluation and Management of Learning Disability.

JUSTIFICATION: Learning Disability (LD) in children is a well-recognized developmental disorder, which has profound academic and psychosocial consequences. Due to the complex nature of LD and multiple disadvantages posed to the child due to LD, a multidisciplinary approach towards intervention is warranted. Given the paucity of evidence-based standardized treatment approaches, consensus guidelines for management of LD are needed. PROCESS: The meeting on formulation of national consensus guidelines on neurodevelopmental disorders was organized by Indian Academy of Pediatrics in Mumbai on 18th

Updates in the genetic evaluation of the child with global developmental delay or intellectual disability.

Global developmental delay (GDD) and intellectual disability (ID) occur in up to 3% of the general population and are even more commonly encountered in the setting of the pediatric neurology clinic. New advances in technology and in the understanding of genetic disorders have led to changes in the diagnostic approach to a child with unexplained GDD or ID. Chromosomal microarray has become a first-line test for evaluation of patients in this population and has both significantly increased diagnostic yield and introduced new challenges in the interpretation of copy number variants of uncertain s

Evaluation of a group intervention for convicted arsonists with mild and borderline intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which people with intellectual disabilities (ID) set fires is difficult to ascertain. However, services working with people with ID and offending or quasi-offending histories are increasing the amount of attention that they give to this difficult and perplexing issue. This is due to the real and perceived threat that it presents to society and the seriousness with which it viewed by the criminal justice system. AIM: Against this background there is very little available in the research literature concerning treatment interventions for fire-setting behaviour in this c

Economic evaluation of caregiver interventions for children with developmental disabilities: A scoping review.

Globally, families with children with developmental disabilities (DDs) experience challenges, including social isolation, stigma, and poverty, especially in low-income settings in Africa. Most children with DDs in Africa remain unidentified and receive no formal support. Caregiver interventions focusing on education and training for the carers/parents have been shown to be adaptable and low intensity in implementation, although the economic evidence is limited. This review aimed to describe the evidence and methodological aspects of economic evaluations for caregiver interventions for DDs. The

Interprofessional education on autism and intellectual disabilities: Program description and initial evaluation.

Project INTERprofessional Autism Collaborative Training (INTERACT) is an interprofessional education program designed to prepare graduate students in psychology, special education, and speech-language pathology to work with autistic children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The rising prevalence of autism, coupled with increased appreciation for interprofessional approaches to service delivery, indicates the need for university training programs to prepare graduate students to work interprofessionally with this population; yet descriptions of such programs and their effective

Psychometric evaluation of the WHODAS 2.0 and prevalence of disability in a Swedish general population.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) is a generic questionnaire that captures health and disability-related functioning information corresponding to six major life domains: Cognition, Mobility, Self-care, Getting along, Life activities, and Participation. The WHODAS 2.0 is used in a wide range of international clinical and research settings. A psychometric evaluation of WHODAS 2.0, Swedish version, in the general population is lacking, together with national reference data to enable interpretation and comparison. This study aims to evaluate the

The reproducibility of psychiatric evaluations of work disability: two reliability and agreement studies.

BACKGROUND: Expert psychiatrists conducting work disability evaluations often disagree on work capacity (WC) when assessing the same patient. More structured and standardised evaluations focusing on function could improve agreement. The RELY studies aimed to establish the inter-rater reproducibility (reliability and agreement) of 'functional evaluations' in patients with mental disorders applying for disability benefits and to compare the effect of limited versus intensive expert training on reproducibility. METHODS: We performed two multi-centre reproducibility studies on standardised functi

Evaluating the impact of dyslexia laws on the identification of specific learning disability and dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that impacts word reading accuracy and/or reading fluency. Over half of the states in the USA have passed legislation intended to promote better identification of individuals with dyslexia. To date, no study has been conducted to investigate the potential impact of state laws on the identification of specific learning disability (SLD), and limited data has been presented on the rate at which students in public school settings are identified with dyslexia. The first aim of the current study was to determine if any detectable changes in the identificati
