BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Quantifying the health burden of alcohol has largely focused upon harm to drinkers, which is an underestimate. There is a growing literature on alcohol's harm to others (HTO), but it lacks the systematic transfer of HTO into a comparative risk assessment framework. This study calculated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), interpersonal violence and traffic injury due to another's drinking.
DESIGN: This study is a disease burden analysis, using modelling of DALYs for New Zealand in 2018.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study to

OBJECTIVE: Burn-related injuries are a small subset of trauma but are a major public health challenge with substantial variation in outcomes and long-term disability. This study quantifies disparities in burn-related burden against other trauma across sociodemographic and regional groups to inform equitable surgical care and resource allocation.
METHODS: This systematic analysis references the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study (1990-2023). Disability-adjusted life year (DALY) number, rate, and percent were assessed across age groups, U.S. regions, and sociodemographic index (SDI) for four i

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses a global health crisis. Smoking, a key risk factor for T2DM, significantly impacts middle-aged and elderly populations. In China, with the world's largest elderly population and a high prevalence of smoking, the burden of smoking-related T2DM remains underrecognized.
METHODS: Using GBD 2021 data, we applied joinpoint regression, age-period-cohort analysis, and the ARIMA model for prediction. This is a secondary dataset analysis. The study population included Chinese adults aged ≥55 years.
RESULTS: From 1990 to 2021, deaths and DALYs attribu

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea is a leading cause of death and illness globally among children younger than 5 years. Mortality and short-term morbidity cause substantial burden of disease but probably underestimate the true effect of diarrhoea on population health. This underestimation is because diarrhoeal diseases can negatively affect early childhood growth, probably through enteric dysfunction and impaired uptake of macronutrients and micronutrients. We attempt to quantify the long-term sequelae associated with childhood growth impairment due to diarrhoea.
METHODS: We used the Global Burden of Dis

Shiqu County, located on the Tibetan plateau of western China, has an extremely high prevalence of both human alveolar echinococcosis (AE), and cystic echinococcosis (CE). The short form 12 version 2 quality of life survey, which was used to evaluate the extent to which morbidity associated with echinococcosis should be accounted, verified that there was a significant reduction in the mean health scores in all categories for individuals diagnosed with abdominal echinococcosis compared with an age and sex cross-matched population. Results of a larger ultrasound survey, which screened 3135 subje

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) aims to bring together all available epidemiological data using a coherent measurement framework, standardised estimation methods, and transparent data sources to enable comparisons of health loss over time and across causes, age-sex groups, and countries. The GBD can be used to generate summary measures such as disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) that make possible comparative assessments of broad epidemiological patterns across countries and time. These summary measures can also be used to qu

The health risk and burden of disease induced by exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) through drinking water and foodstuffs in Iran were assessed. The iAs levels in drinking water and foodstuffs (15 food groups) in the country were determined through systematic review of three international databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and meta-analysis. Based on the results of the systematic review and meta-analysis, the average iAs levels in drinking water and all the food groups at the national level were lower than the maximum permissible levels. The total average non-carcinogenic risk of

BACKGROUND: Estimating the burden of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) compared to other communicable diseases is an ongoing challenge given the need for good quality data on the incidence of these infections and the involved comorbidities. Based on the methodology of the Burden of Communicable Diseases in Europe (BCoDE) project and 2011-2012 data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) point prevalence survey (PPS) of HAIs and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals, we estimated the burden of six common HAIs.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: The included HAI
