Surgical results of two-stage reconstruction of the auricle in congenital microtia using an autogenous costal cartilage alone or combined with canaloplasty.

BACKGROUND: The authors performed two-stage ear reconstruction using autogenous costal cartilage alone or combined with canaloplasty of the acoustic meatus to improve the functional results with minimal operative stages. METHODS: In the first stage, lobule transposition, fabrication of the cartilage framework, and implantation of the framework were performed. In the second stage, elevation of the auricle, coverage with the mastoid fascia flap and skin graft, and concha excavation were performed. Canaloplasty was combined simultaneously in 27 patients with radiologic and audiometric evidence o

Auricular mucormycosis: a case report.

Mucormycosis is a rare, saprophytic, invasive, and fulminant fungal disease. It occurs in immunocompromised patients such as those with diabetes mellitus or blood dyscrasia, or in patients under immunosuppressive therapy. A 17-year-old female patient with diabetic ketoacidosis presented with a black-colored lesion in the auricle and external ear canal. Physical examination showed necrosis of the auricle, external ear canal, and neighboring skin. She also had facial paralysis. Debridement of the necrotic tissues was performed and the samples were submitted for microbiologic and histopathologic

Congenital annular multiple fibrofolliculomas occurring with deformity of the ear and ventricular septal defect.

We describe a 5-year-old girl who had multiple fibrofolliculomas with an unusual annular configuration, present since birth, localized to the mid-back. She had no family history of similar skin lesions. Examination showed a depigmented patch on her left buttock and other congenital anomalies, i.e. deformity of the auricle of the ear and ventricular septal defect. There has been no previous report of congenital multiple fibrofolliculomas occurring with congenital malformations such as deformity of the auricle of the ear and ventricular septal defect. The congenital occurrence and unusual config

Three-Dimensional Auricular Subunit Models for Cartilage Framework Fabrication: Our Preliminary Experience.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) digital imaging and printing techniques have been popularly applied in microtia reconstruction. However, there is a lack of clinical report of using them to create 3D printed ear subunit models for cartilage framework fabrication. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients who underwent auricle reconstruction with 3D templates was performed. Patients' demography, surgical complications, framework accuracy, and aesthetic outcomes of the reconstructed auricles were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty cases included in this study. Complications were minor. The average (

[Personal experiences in the surgery of external ear abnormalities. IV. Microtia].

Our methods of the reconstruction of the microtia are mentioned. In microtia of both auricles we first try to reconstruct the structures of middle ear and the external channel. If possible we use a "transposition-rotation flap" and rib cartilage for support. The advantages of pedicled flaps in auricle surgery are described.

A bolster suture technique for ear reconstruction for microtia without skin necrosis.

A new bolster suture technique to prevent skin necrosis in microtia ear reconstruction is presented. An outer series of bolsters is placed distant from the ear framework in a zigzag fashion, the temporal skin being gathered on the framework. In this way, the skin flap overlying the framework is relaxed and has sufficient blood flow. Therefore the skin flap can be thinned with little risk of necrosis. Furthermore, the contour of the reconstructed auricle is accentuated because of the thin relaxed overlying skin. Seven ears with microtia were reconstructed using this method. The results were sat

The correction of the prominent ear.

The prominent ear was first noted in the medical literature to be a social and psychological disturbance in 1881, when Ely suggested the first technique for the correction of this condition. Since Ely many surgeons have tried to find the best solution for this deformity; however, because of the specific cartilagenous architecture of the auricle, no one has yet designed an acceptable and secure technique. The successful reconstructured auricle should be the result of tackling all components of the deformity, namely, the absence of the antihelix and the aloofing of the concha from the mastoid. M

Sound lateralization test in patients with unilateral microtia and atresia after reconstruction of the auricle and external canal and fitting of canal-type hearing aids.

CONCLUSION: In patients with unilateral microtia and atresia after reconstruction of the auricle and external canal and fitting of a canal-type hearing aid for the operated ear, the ability to discriminate the inter-aural intensity difference (IID) was acquired in all of the patients, whereas that to discriminate inter-aural time difference (ITD) was acquired in one-half of the patients. OBJECTIVE: To study the post-operative sound lateralization ability in patients with unilateral microtia and atresia after reconstruction surgery of the auricle and external canal and fitting of a canal-type

Firm elevation of the auricle in reconstruction of microtia with a retroauricular fascial flap wrapping an autogenous cartilage wedge.

During conventional reconstruction of the auricle in patients with microtia, simply separating the auricle from the mastoid region with a full-thickness skin graft usually fails to create firm elevation and sufficient projection. To achieve frontal symmetry is difficult, and sometimes the normal auricle needs to be set back. We reconstructed the auricle in patients with microtia in two major stages using a modified Nagata's method. Using a wide W-incision skin flap, the first stage includes implantation of a cartilage framework and transposition of the ear lobule. Our modification lies in the

Incomplete Ear Amputation.

Ear amputations are common in emergency departments as the auricle's protrusion from the lateral aspect of the head makes it particularly susceptible to trauma. Of the numerous approaches for auricle injuries, the classic methods include microsurgical replantation, primary reattachment, composite graft, retroauricular pocket principle, secondary reconstruction with rib cartilage, and methods using postauricular flap. The success of the operation depends largely on choosing the appropriate surgical procedure since many factors can influence surgical outcome. There is no 1 gold standard techniqu

Ear projection and the posterior auricular muscle insertion.

Prominent ears is a common congenital anomaly affecting approximately 5 percent of the general population. The etiology has been attributed to three basic deformities in the ear structure: valgus of the concha with a cranioauricular angle greater than 40 degrees, underfolding of the anthelix, and rarely, hypertrophy of the concha. It is believed that by virtue of its insertion onto the ponticulus, the cranial surface of the concha, the posterior auricular muscle may function to pull the auricle back toward the head. A proximally (anteromedially) displaced insertion site would decrease the leng

Retroposition of the Vestigial Cartilage in Patients With Microtia: A Novel Technique to Enhance Projection of the Reconstructed Ear.

BACKGROUND: The projection of the reconstructed auricle is an important step in ear reconstruction. The novel use of the vestigial cartilage can successfully replace the projection piece harvested from the costal cartilage, improve the three-dimensional contour of the reconstructed auricle, and help deepening of the concha, compensate for mastoid atrophy in patients with hemifacial microsomia. METHODS: A total of 34 patients with microtia were included and classified according to the Nagata classification. Anotia and atypical cases with deficient cartilage are excluded. Retrospective study on unilateral polyotia combined with microtia utilizing the technique of preserving residual ear tissue.

BACKGROUND: The presence of polyotia in individuals with microtia is a rare deformity. Due to the intricate structure of the auricle, uncertain etiology, and challenging corrective techniques, it has always been a focal point in the field of plastic surgery. The present study presents a technique for correcting the combination of polyotia and microtia by utilizing residual ear tissue as graft material. METHODS: The retrospective study included 23 patients with polyotia and microtia from 2018 to 2022. The residual ear tissue was used to rectify auricular deformities in all patients. The patien

Auricular haematoma.

Auricular haematomas typically occur as a result of the auricle being pulled or subjected to blunt trauma in association with contact sports, accidents or violence. An auricular haematoma requires prompt surgical intervention to avoid cauliflower ear, also known as «wrestler’s ear». A cauliflower ear is a permanent deformity made up of connective tissue and cartilage.

Fascia lata suspension of malpositioned ears.

A new technique for the correction of malpositioned ears in congenital or acquired disorders is described. The use of a fascia lata strip makes a rigid fixation of the ear to the pericranium possible without total fixation of the ear in all directions. The configuration of the auricle is not altered, and the scars are inconspicuous.

Microvascular Replantation for partial auricle Amputation: Only Arterial anastomoses and Acupuncture Bloodletting.

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports on replantation of complete auricle amputation, but few reports on successful replantation of partial auricle amputation. The main reason is that the diameter of blood vessels at the end of auricle is only 0.3 mm, and it is difficult to find suitable blood vessels, especially venous vessels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the method of revascularization after partial auricle amputation. METHODS: Microvascular repairs were performed in an amputated segment with only identified artery vessels for anastomosis, and vein was unavailable for an

Probable fatal mastoiditis by the around 2300 year old Heidelberg's Egyptian mummy Djed-Hor.

The universal use of computed tomography (CT) has opened up new possibilities in the noninvasive examination of human mummies, and particularly the detailed study of the fine structures of the temporal bone. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological changes, as seen on CT, found in the right temporal bone of Djed-Hor, an around 2300 year old Heidelberg's Egyptian mummy, and to discuss their possible causal relation to his death. Here we showed the presence of a compress on the auricle, and of probable pus in the mastoid, middle ear, and external ear with erosion of the tegmen tym
