Deliberate Practice and Skill Acquisition in Nursing Practice.

The purpose of this article is to describe an educational process designed to accelerate skill acquisition for new nurse graduates through deliberate practice and situated learning experiences. The concept of deliberate practice provides the framework for authentic learning experiences based on real-life situations that incorporate targeted outcomes for success while pushing their limits beyond what was previously achieved. Through deliberate practice, new graduate nurses are given the opportunity to gain valuable practical experiences that otherwise would have taken years to accomplish in a c

Non-nurse college graduates: a new resource for future nurse practitioners.

Non-nurse college graduates are admitted to the master's of science in nursing (MSN) degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Over the years, a majority of these non-traditional students have chosen the family nurse practitioner clinical concentration. The purpose of this study was to compare non-traditional and traditional family nurse practitioner (FNP) graduates in terms of academic and career-development characteristics. The study population consisted of all 91 (48 non-traditional and 43 traditional) UTK FNP graduates from 1981 to 1986. Little difference was found be

Nurse practitioner training and local medical provider supply.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) workforce expanded rapidly from 2010-2023, especially in rural counties, where patients today are nearly as likely to receive care from an NP as from a physician. At the same time, rural health outcomes and access to health care continue to worsen relative to urban areas. Empirical research on how NPs interact with or substitute for physicians remains limited. This paper exploits county-level openings of graduate nursing programs to test how they impact the local supply of NPs and primary care physicians. Using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data S

A survey of the ways master's level nursing students learn the research process.

Because of the need for advanced practice nurses to perform more outcome measurement, a survey was conducted in the fall of 1997 to determine how master's level students learned the research process. Three hundred four surveys were mailed to schools with master's programs, and 222 were returned for a return rate of 73%. Sixty-six percent of the programs surveyed required a thesis and/or a research project. However, there was great variation in the research projects. A comprehensive examination was used to measure research ability by 36 programs (16%), either in conjunction with a thesis or res

Person-centred PhD supervision in health sciences: A co-created model.

BACKGROUND: In a health care context, person-centred care proceeds from the person's individual values, needs and experiences. In an educational context, PhD supervision similarly ought to proceed from the PhD student's perspective and situation. However, there is limited knowledge about aspects of importance to accomplish this. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore PhD students' and supervisors' perspectives on person-centred PhD supervision and collaboratively develop a conceptual model that enhances understanding and practice. DESIGN: The study had a descriptive, exploratory design.

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Mental Health Counselors and Nurses.

The continuous and rapid evolution of medical technology and the complexity of delivering person-centered care in the 21st century calls for collaboration among health care professionals. Global health now "involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-clinical care" (Koplan et al., 2009, p. 1995). The need for mental health practitioners to work in interprofessional contexts requires graduate and postgraduate programs to incorporate interprofessional education into
