Egg allergy: an update.

Egg allergy is the commonest infant food allergy both in Australia and world-wide. The clinical presentation of egg allergy is varied - egg is involved in both IgE and non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions and has been implicated in conditions such as anaphylaxis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, atopic dermatitis and eosinophilic oesophagitis. The clinical presentation, pathophysiology and diagnosis as well as the natural history and management of egg allergy will be discussed. Current theories about primary prevention as well as potential future therapies are presented. Finally, pr

Hazardous Medications in Children with Egg, Red Meat, Gelatin, Fish, and Cow's Milk Allergy.

Childhood food allergies are a growing public health problem. Once the offending food allergens have been identified, a strict elimination diet is necessary in treatment or prevention of most of the allergic reactions. Accidental food ingestion can lead to severe anaphylaxis. Food- derived substances can be used in medications at various stages of the manufacturing process. In this review, the possible roles of medications which may contain egg, red meat, gelatin, and fish allergens on allergic reactions in children with food allergy were evaluated.

Dose response relationships and interference of simultaneous skin tests in delayed hypersensitivity.

The relationship between the intensity of the delayed hypersensitivity reaction and the dose of antigen used for its elicitation change with time after sensitization. At three weeks the reactions to 100 mug of egg albumen were little different from those to 1 mug but at 14 weeks 100 mug gave much stronger reactions. This means that to follow the development of a delayed hypersensitivity response several antigen doses should be used. If two skin tests were performed simultaneously in the same individual, the stronger one suppressed the weaker one, regardless of whether two different doses of th

Unique Aspects of Managing Milk and Egg Allergies.

Milk and egg allergies are of critical importance due to their high prevalence and rising epidemiology. Although they are commonly outgrown, they can be severe, and the foods are difficult to avoid. Nutritional status is compromised by avoiding milk. There are important differential diagnoses for milk allergy, including nonimmunoglobulin E-mediated allergies and lactose intolerance. Milk and egg allergies can be managed by allowing baked forms of these proteins into diets with attention to risks and benefits. Milk and egg can be in various medications although for most products their safety in

Skin-test reactivity to egg protein--exposure by inhalation compared with ingestion.

Of two hundred and sixty-seven subjects exposed to egg by ingestion only, forty-eight were skin (prick)-test positive to egg material. All forty-eight subjects also reacted to other allergens on skin testing, forty-seven (98%) to allergens associated with respiratory allergy. Of thirteen subjects exposed to egg by inhalation in their workplace (and ingestion) two were skin-test-positive to egg, both also reacting to respirable allergens. Thus, inhalation of egg antigen does not greatly influence skin-test reactivity to eggs as determined by comparing the ratio of egg skin-test-positives to tot

Sensitization in early age to food allergens in children with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and laboratory evidence increasingly supports the notion that food allergy plays a role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the prevalence of clinically significant food hypersensitivity among children with AD remains an unanswered question. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively determine the prevalence of IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity among patients referred to a dermatology department for evaluation of AD, and to analyze the clinical relevance of these sensitizations in AD. METHODS: We studied 44 infants of both sexes, aged less than 12 months old, who a

[Egg Sensitization in Pediatric and Adult Populations with Compatible Symptoms: A Prospective Study].

INTRODUCTION: Egg allergy is a common cause of food hypersensitivity, especially in the pediatric population, with an estimated prevalence of 9%. The main proteins involved are ovomucoid (Gal d 1), the most allergenic, and ovalbumin (Gal d 2), the most abundant. Although most cases remit in childhood, certain factors are associated with persistence into adulthood, such as elevated levels of specific IgE, the presence of other food allergies, and atopic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of egg sensitization in patients with symptoms reported after egg consumption and to describe

Effect of maternal egg consumption on breast milk ovalbumin concentration.

BACKGROUND: Maternal dietary avoidance of egg has been recommended to treat egg allergy in breastfed infants. However, only one of three randomized controlled trials have produced evidence in favour of this recommendation. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess human milk ovalbumin (OVA) concentration after daily maternal ingestion of one cooked egg for 3 weeks. METHODS: Mothers with egg-sensitive, eczematous breastfed infants were randomly allocated to consume one muffin per day containing one egg (egg group, n=16) or a similar egg-free muffin (control group, n=16) for 21 days (Days 3-23).

Propofol administration is safe in adult eosinophilic esophagitis patients sensitized to egg, soy, or peanut.

BACKGROUND: Sedation might improve tolerability and adherence to endoscopic procedures in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Propofol administration is often contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to egg, soy, or peanut. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety of propofol administration for procedural sedation in EoE patients sensitized/allergic to egg, soy, peanut. METHODS: A retrospective observational study in adult EoE patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy with propofol sedation was conducted between January 2009 and March 2013. Allergic reactions to propofol in egg-allergic children.

BACKGROUND: Egg and/or soy allergy are often cited as contraindications to propofol administration. Our aim was to determine whether children with an immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated egg and/or soy allergy had an allergic reaction after propofol use. METHODS: We performed a retrospective case review over an 11-year period (1999-2010) of children with IgE-mediated egg and/or soy allergy who had propofol administered to them at the Children's Hospital Westmead, Sydney. RESULTS: Twenty-eight egg-allergic patients with 43 propofol administrations were identified. No child with a soy allergy who had

Component-resolved diagnostics in Thai children with cow's milk and egg allergy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) have garnered a lot of attention in recent years in the diagnosis of food allergies. We aimed to investigate sensitization against cow's milk and egg white components, and to study the clinical usefulness of serum food-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to cow's milk and egg white components in Thai children with cow's milk and egg allergies. METHOD: Children with IgE-mediated cow's milk and/or egg allergy were enrolled. Clinical reactions were determined. Specific IgE against cow's milk, egg white, alpha-lactalbumin (ALA), beta-lac

Skin prick test and specific serum IgE in the diagnostic evaluation of suspected cow's milk and hen's egg allergy in children: does one replace the other?

BACKGROUND: The measurement of specific serum immunoglobulin E (sIgE) and the skin prick test (SPT) are accepted tools in the diagnostic work-up of suspected food allergy. Often only one of the methods is used to determine sensitization; however, it is still under debate whether these two methods can be used interchangeably. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the concordance of SPT and sIgE serum assays with regard to suspected food allergy. METHODS: In 395 children referred to our clinic with suspected cow's milk allergy and in 268 children with suspected hen's egg allergy specific immunoglobulin E

Possible anaphylaxis after propofol in a child with food allergy.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of anaphylaxis due to propofol in a child with allergies to egg and peanut oil. CASE SUMMARY: A 14-month-old boy with a history of reactive airway disease was hospitalized for treatment of respiratory symptoms. The patient had documented allergies to egg, peanut oil, and mold. Within the first few hours after admission, acute respiratory decompensation occurred, and arrangements were made to transfer the patient to our tertiary-care hospital. Prior to transfer, he was emergently intubated under sedation and paralysis with propofol and rocuronium. When emergency air

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Future therapies for food allergies.

Food allergy is an increasingly prevalent problem in westernized countries, and there is an unmet medical need for an effective form of therapy. A number of therapeutic strategies are under investigation targeting foods that most frequently provoke severe IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions (peanut, tree nuts, and shellfish) or are most common in children, such as cow's milk and hen's egg. Approaches being pursued are both food allergen specific and nonspecific. Allergen-specific approaches include oral, sublingual, and epicutaneous immunotherapy (desensitization) with native food allergens an

Vaccination and anaphylaxis.

The incidence of anaphylactic or severe allergic reactions to vaccines is very low, less than one case per million vaccine doses. Larger studies from later years report no deaths. The cause of the reaction is usually not the immunizing antigen itself, but rather some other vaccine ingredient such as egg protein from the production process or gelatin added as a stabilizer. Most people with egg allergy can be vaccinated without any reaction. Vasovagal reactions with or without hyperventilation are common after vaccination. They can be rather dramatic and are often mistaken for anaphylactic react
