Variability of transient elastography-based spleen stiffness performed at 100 Hz.

BACKGROUND: Spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) performed by transient elastography at 100 Hz is a novel technology for the evaluation of portal hypertension in advanced chronic liver disease, but technical aspects are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the intraexamination variability of SSM and to determine the best transient elastography protocol for obtaining robust measurements to be used in clinical practice. METHODS: We analyzed 253 SSM exams with up to 20 scans for each examination, performed between April 2021 and June 2022. All SSM results were evaluated according to different protocols b

Utilizing shear wave elastography for the evaluation of optical nerve involvement in Behçet's disease.

In this study, we investigated the elasticity of the optic nerve using shear wave elastography (SWE) in patients with Behçet's Disease (BD) and compare findings with a healthy control group. Optic nerve measurements of 40 eyes in the BD group and 38 eyes in the control group were performed by SWE (SWE-right and SWE-left). The mean age of the individuals in the BD group was higher than controls (p = 0.022). The SWE measurement results in the right eye were significantly higher in the BD group (p = 0.005), while SWE-left values were similar in the two groups (p = 0.206). There was a moderate pos

Influence of Bias in the Assessment of Patellar Tendon Stiffness: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The aim of the present study was to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of the main biases in practical applications of the different types of elastography in assessment of the stiffness of healthy patellar tendons. A literature search on four databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Pubmed and SportDiscus) was conducted on March 25, 2020. After analysis of 1,052 resultant articles, studies were included if they met two inclusion criteria: (1) studies were observational or randomized controlled trials; (2) studies included outcomes of patellar tendon stiffness. Twenty-one studies met the i

Spleen ultrasound elastography: state of the art and future directions - a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: An early and accurate diagnosis of clinically significant portal hypertension is mandatory for a correct prediction and management of the complications usually observed in patients affected by chronic liver disease (CLD). Spleen stiffness measurement is arising as a promising non-invasive technique, giving a reliable measure of haemodynamic changes occurring during cirrhosis progression, but contrasting data are available to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed including the several studies dealing with the spleen stiffness measurement in the evaluation of

Ultrasound elastography: liver.

Ultrasound elastography, also termed sonoelastography, is being used increasingly in clinical practice to aid the diagnosis and management of diffuse liver disease. Elastography has been shown to be capable of differentiating advanced and early-stage liver fibrosis, and consequently a major application in clinical liver care includes progression to cirrhosis risk stratification through (1) assessment of liver fibrosis stage in HCV and HBV patients, (2) distinguishing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis from simple steatosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients, and (3) prognostic evaluation

Transcranial ultrasound viscoelasticity and fluidity imaging of brain tissue based on multi-scale spatiotemporal deep learning.

Brain tissue mechanics play a critical role in neurological disorders. However, noninvasive characterization is impeded by the tissue's biphasic composition and small shear modulus. We developed a transcranial ultrasound viscoelasticity and fluidity imaging method using multiscale spatiotemporal deep learning. This method integrates multiscale pyramidal convolution and hybrid losses to overcome the limitations of low-SNR signals and small shear displacements through dual-branch processing, capturing high-frequency details (300 Hz) and low-frequency patterns (100 Hz) simultaneously. The propose

Kelvin-Voigt Parameters Reconstruction of Cervical Tissue-Mimicking Phantoms Using Torsional Wave Elastography.

The reconstruction of viscous properties of soft tissues, and more specifically, of cervical tissue is a challenging problem. In this paper, a new method is proposed to reconstruct the viscoelastic parameters of cervical tissue-mimicking phantoms by a Torsional Wave Elastography (TWE) technique. The reconstruction method, based on a Probabilistic Inverse Problem (PIP) approach, is presented and experimentally validated against Shear Wave Elastography (SWE). The anatomy of the cervical tissue has been mimicked by means of a two-layer gelatine phantom that simulates the epithelial and connective

Axial mechanical and structural characterization of keratoconus corneas.

PURPOSE: Previous studies indicate that there is an axial gradient of collagen lamellar branching and anastomosing leading to regional differences in corneal tissue stiffness that may control corneal shape. To further test this hypothesis we have measured the axial material stiffness and quantified the collagen lamellar complexity in ectatic and mechanically weakened keratoconus corneas (KC). METHODS: Acoustic radiation force elastic microscopy (ARFEM) was used to probe the axial mechanical properties of the cone region of three donor KC buttons. 3 Dimensional second harmonic generation micro

[Noninvasive Imaging Test to Assess Liver Fibrosis: Vibration-controlled Transient Elastography].

Liver fibrosis refers to the formation of scar tissue in the liver when inflammation persists over a long period. Assessing liver fibrosis is crucial for predicting the prognosis of chronic liver disease and managing patients with these conditions. Although a liver biopsy remains the gold standard for assessing liver fibrosis, it is limited by its invasive nature. Consequently, continuous efforts have been made to develop non-invasive methods for evaluating liver fibrosis, including imaging techniques and serum biomarkers. Vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE), a representative no

Optical force estimation for interactions between tool and soft tissues.

Robotic assistance in minimally invasive surgery offers numerous advantages for both patient and surgeon. However, the lack of force feedback in robotic surgery is a major limitation, and accurately estimating tool-tissue interaction forces remains a challenge. Image-based force estimation offers a promising solution without the need to integrate sensors into surgical tools. In this indirect approach, interaction forces are derived from the observed deformation, with learning-based methods improving accuracy and real-time capability. However, the relationship between deformation and force is d

Optical-Based Analysis of Soft Tissue Structures.

Fibrous structures are an integral and dynamic feature of soft biological tissues that are directly related to the tissues' condition and function. A greater understanding of mechanical tissue behavior can be gained through quantitative analyses of structure alone, as well as its integration into computational models of soft tissue function. Histology and other nonoptical techniques have traditionally dominated the field of tissue imaging, but they are limited by their invasiveness, inability to provide resolution on the micrometer scale, and dynamic information. Recent advances in optical mod

Design and Testing of a Single-Element Ultrasound Viscoelastography System for Point-of-Care Edema Quantification.

Management of fluid overload in patients with end-stage renal disease represents a unique challenge to clinical practice because of the lack of accurate and objective measurement methods. Currently, peripheral edema is subjectively assessed by palpation of the patient's extremities, ostensibly a qualitative indication of tissue viscoelastic properties. New robust quantitative estimates of tissue fluid content would allow clinicians to better guide treatment, minimizing reactive treatment decision making. Ultrasound viscoelastography (UVE) can be used to estimate strain in viscoelastic tissue,

High-resolution quantitative imaging of cornea elasticity using supersonic shear imaging.

The noninvasive estimation of in vivo mechanical properties of cornea is envisioned to find several applications in ophthalmology. Such high-resolution measurements of local cornea stiffness could lead to a better anticipation and understanding of corneal pathologies such as Keratoconus. It could also provide a quantitative evaluation of corneal biomechanical response after corneal refractive surgeries and a tool for evaluating the efficacy of new cornea treatments such as cornea transplant using femtosecond laser or therapy based on Riboflavin/UltraViolet-A Corneal Cross Linking (UVA CXL).
