Cardiovascular response to functional electrical stimulation and dynamic tilt table therapy to improve orthostatic tolerance.

Orthostatic hypotension is a common condition for individuals with stroke or spinal cord injury. The inability to regulate the central nervous system will result in pooling of blood in the lower extremities leading to orthostatic intolerance. This study compared the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) and passive leg movements to improve orthostatic tolerance during head-up tilt. Four trial conditions were assessed during head-up tilt: (1) rest, (2) isometric FES of the hamstring, gastrocnemius and quadriceps muscle group, (3) passive mobilization using the Erigo dynamic tilt table;

Electrical stimulation of rat medial prefrontal cortex enhances forebrain serotonin output: implications for electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation in depression.

Decreased activity of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), as well as reduced serotonergic neurotransmission, is considered as a characteristic feature of major depression. The mechanism by which electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) achieve their antidepressant effects may involve changes in PFC activity. It is, however, still unclear whether these changes are accompanied by increased synaptic availability of serotonin (5-HT). In the present study, 5-HT efflux in the rat ventral hippocampus and amygdala was analyzed using in vivo microdialysis during low-current

Network meta-analysis of different electrical stimulation therapies for lower limb functional rehabilitation in stroke patients.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical stimulation is widely applied in the rehabilitation of post-stroke lower limb dysfunction; however, its comparative efficacy and safety across different modalities remain unclear. Substantial heterogeneity among electrical stimulation techniques limits evidence-based clinical decision-making, highlighting the need for a comprehensive comparative evaluation. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across seven databases (CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) from inception to June 2025. Randomized controlled tria

Upper Extremity Muscle Recovery Profiles With Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) often cause significant functional impairments. Functional electrical stimulation therapy (FEST) aims to enhance muscle strength, particularly when natural recovery decreases. However, the recovery profiles of individual muscles treated with FEST during the chronic phase are not well understood. The primary objective of this study was to characterize the timing and magnitude of gains in individual muscle strength during FEST. The secondary objective was to identify factors predictive of the response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study evaluated th

The Neurostimulationist will see you now: prescribing direct electrical stimulation therapies for the human brain in epilepsy and beyond.

As the pace of research in implantable neurotechnology increases, it is important to take a step back and see if the promise lives up to our intentions. While direct electrical stimulation applied intracranially has been used for the treatment of various neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's, epilepsy, clinical depression, and Obsessive-compulsive disorder, the effectiveness can be highly variable. One perspective is that the inability to consistently treat these neurological disorders in a standardized way is due to multiple, interlaced factors, including stimulation parameters, locatio

Electrical stimulation therapies for CNS disorders and pain are mediated by competition between different neuronal networks in the brain.

CNS neuronal networks are known to control normal physiological functions, including locomotion and respiration. Neuronal networks also mediate the pathophysiology of many CNS disorders. Stimulation therapies, including localized brain and vagus nerve stimulation, electroshock, and acupuncture, are proposed to activate "therapeutic" neuronal networks. These therapeutic networks are dormant prior to stimulatory treatments, but when the dormant networks are activated they compete with pathophysiological neuronal networks, disrupting their function. This competition diminishes the disease symptom

Bioactive Self-Adaptive Hydrogel Platform for Integrated Electrical Stimulation Therapy and Clinical Monitoring of Postoperative Wound.

Postoperative wound management remains clinically challenging due to delayed healing, subcutaneous infections, and the absence of systems capable of real-time therapeutic and diagnostic integration. Addressing this need, we developed a bioactive, self-adaptive hydrogel platform that combines electrical stimulation (ES) therapy with resistance-based bioelectronic sensing for personalized postoperative wound care. The hydrogel is constructed from dynamic borate ester-cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), with wool keratin for hemostasis and tissue remodeling and tannic acid for adhesion, antio
