Emergency nurse practitioner care and emergency department patient flow: case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare ED waiting times (for medical assessment and treatment), treatment times and length of stay (LOS) for patients managed by an emergency nurse practitioner candidate (ENPC) with patients managed via traditional ED care. METHODS: A case-control design was used. Patients were selected using the three most common ED discharge diagnoses for ENPC managed patients: hand/wrist wounds, hand/wrist fractures and removal of plaster of Paris. The ENPC group (n = 102) consisted of patients managed by the ENPC who had ED discharge diagnoses as mentioned above. Th

Emergency Nurses' Training, Experience, and Confidence With Obstetrical Emergencies: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Arkansas.

INTRODUCTION: The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries, with rural states being disproportionately affected. In counties without birthing hospitals, emergency departments can serve as the first point of care for obstetrical complications. This study assessed emergency nurses' experience and confidence in managing obstetrical complications in the rural state of Arkansas. METHODS: Emergency nurses at Arkansas hospitals were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey. The web-based survey asked nurses to report their experience in managing 15

Nurse, Provider, and Emergency Department Technician: Perceptions and Experiences of Violence and Aggression in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Patient/visitor violence and aggression (V&A) in the emergency department occurs daily. Few interventions exist to decrease V&A. Research describing prevalence, severity, and perceived safety among ED clinicians is limited. METHODS: A descriptive survey explored V&A against ED clinicians in one urban emergency department. A sample of nurses, ED technicians, physicians and advanced practice providers participated. Participants completed a demographic survey, Personal Workplace Safety Instrument for Emergency Nurses (PWSI-EN), and ENA V&A frequency checklist. Analysis of Variance

Development of emergency nursing educational materials in Lao People's Democratic Republic: a methodological study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop contextualized emergency nursing educational materials tailored to the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Emergency nurses in Lao PDR face challenges arising from the lack of standardized, culturally relevant learning resources. Existing materials are often adopted from other countries and do not adequately reflect local needs, contributing to inconsistencies in clinical practice. Developing locally tailored resources, supported by official development assistance, is therefore essential for improving emergency nursing education and practice. METHO

Identifying Key Predictors of Nursing Workload in Emergency Infusion Rooms: A Decision Tree Approach.

Purpose: Accurate assessment of nursing workload is essential for staffing allocation and operational management in emergency infusion rooms. However, workload generation is influenced by complex and potentially nonlinear interactions among patient volume, treatment duration, and care activities, which may not be adequately captured by conventional statistical approaches. This study aimed to identify key predictors associated with nursing workload intensity and develop an interpretable workload stratification framework using a Classification and Regression Tree (CRT) model. Methods: Daily oper

Vital Sign and Nursing Assessment Patterns in Emergency Transfers to the Intensive Care Unit.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients requiring emergency transfer (ET) to an intensive care unit (ICU) have higher in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Understanding clinical indicators preceding transfer in those requiring emergent intervention can inform the development of tools focused on early recognition of clinical deterioration. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patterns of clinical deterioration in vital sign and nursing assessment data before ET vs non-ET to the ICU from acute care units. METHODS: A single-center retrospective case-cohort study was conducted at a quaternary pediatric hospital of p

Evaluation of emergency medical responses to nursing homes in a local area of Germany.

BACKGROUND: In rural areas with low population density, emergency medical services (EMS) are often the first source of acute medical care in nursing homes (NHs) when nursing staff are unable to manage the situation, and no specialist practitioner is immediately available. This study analysed EMS responses to NHs in a German region to evaluate their frequency, causes, and outcomes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analysed EMS responses to NHs in a German region from July 2020 to December 2024. Prehospital patient care was assessed using the ABCDE approach, with additional analysis of feedba

Epidemiological analysis and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We conducted a literature review on the epidemiology and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma in order to facilitate rescue and care planning. Traumatic accidents alter oral and craniomaxillofacial anatomy and physiology, resulting in craniomaxillofacial scars and deformities, temporomandibular disorders, and oromandibular dysfunction. Such trauma affects speech, chewing, and eating; results in long hospitalization and burdensome healthcare expenses; and in severe cases may lead to potentially life-threatening complications such as respiratory

Emergency abdominal surgery in patients presenting from skilled nursing facilities: Opportunities for palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Residents of skilled nursing facilities (SNF) with acute abdomen present with more comorbidities and frailty than community-dwelling (CD) counterparts. Outcomes in this population are poorly described. METHODS: We hypothesized that SNF patients have higher mortality and morbidity than CD patients. This retrospective review of the NSQIP database from 2011 to 2015 compared outcomes of SNF and CD patients presenting with bowel obstruction, ischemia and perforation. Primary outcomes were in-hospital and 30-day mortality and failure-to-rescue (FTR). RESULTS: 18,326 patients met inclus

Perspectives of emergency department physicians and nurses on reasons for preventable emergency department visits by patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer frequently visit the emergency department (ED) for medical care, yet approximately half of ED visits for patients with cancer are thought to be preventable. Preventable ED visits are associated with increased healthcare costs and poor patient experiences and outcomes. The voices of ED providers who work with patients with cancer in their everyday practices have not been solicited as it pertains to preventable visits. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe the perspectives of ED physicians and nurses on reasons for preventable ED visits by patient
