Walking Alongside: Chinese Mothers' Lived Experiences of Supporting Autistic Youth on the Journey to Employment.

Mothers' persistent involvement is a critical but underexplored area of autistic youth's transition to employment. Using a qualitative research design, this study interviewed five mothers, two fathers, five autistic youth, and seven teachers to explore the lived experiences of Chinese mothers who supported autistic youth towards employment. By foregrounding mothers' voices, five interconnected themes were developed and represented in a spiralling model: (1) navigating educational pathways, (2) preparing for employment from childhood, (3) building a long-term support system, (4) balancing hope

Supporting young adults experiencing psychosis with their employment: A qualitative exploration of occupational therapists' experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing psychosis have the same plans for work and future careers as their peers; however, many find themselves unable to participate. While there is research available about interventions used to support employment of young adults with psychosis, there is little evidence regarding the experience of occupational therapists working in this field and the vocational rehabilitation interventions and practices they use. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was used to explore the perspectives of occupational therapy practitioners

Supporting the return to work of breast cancer survivors: perspectives from Canadian employer representatives.

UNLABELLED: PUR POSE: A significant proportion of women with breast cancer want to RTW (return to work) after treatment. Employers play a key role in facilitating RTW for these employees who face distinct challenges. However, the portrait of these challenges remains to be documented from the perspective of employer representatives. The purpose of this article is to describe the perceptions of Canadian employer representatives regarding the management of the RTW of BCSs (breast cancer survivors). METHODS: Thirteen qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives from businesses of va

Between support and uncertainty: employers' perspectives on workplace inclusion of people with mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of mental health in the workplace, people with mental health problems continue to face substantial barriers to labour market participation. While stigma-related explanations have been widely addressed, less is known about how employers respond to mental health problems within the constraints of everyday organisational practice. This study explores employers' perspectives on workplace inclusion, with a particular focus on ambivalences, facilitating orientations, and expectations towards employees with mental health problems. METHODS: This study reports

Addressing Employment Barriers Among Persons with Homeless Experiences: Implementation Lessons For Advancing Equity From an Electronic-Bicycle-Supported Vocational Rehabilitation Pilot.

INTRODUCTION: To combat persistent health and social disparities, the VA Greater Los Angeles and its community partners piloted a novel vocational rehabilitation program that employed persons who have experienced homelessness (PEHs) as app-based food deliverers. The program focused on removing barriers to employment, providing subsidized electronic bicycles for deliveries and personal use; "priority status" as deliverers; and access to financial literacy coaching. We aimed to characterize program experiences, with a lens toward program scale-up. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interview

A Randomised Controlled Trial of Evidence Based Supported Employment for People Who have Recently been Homeless and have a Mental Illness.

Individual placement and support (IPS) has not been tested experimentally among people recently housed with a scattered-site Housing First program. Ninety recently housed people were randomized to IPS or usual services. Regression models estimated via GEE were used to compare employment outcomes. Over 8 months of follow-up with good fidelity, fifteen (34 %) people in the IPS group versus nine (22 %) in the control group found competitive employment (p = 0.16). Adjusted odds of obtaining competitive employment were greater in the IPS group (OR 2.42, 95 %CI 1.13-5.16). Other employment outcomes

Concurrent validation of a neurocognitive assessment protocol for clients with mental illness in job matching as shop sales in supported employment.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational therapists play a major role in the assessment and referral of clients with severe mental illness for supported employment. Nonetheless, there is scarce literature about the content and predictive validity of the process. In addition, the criteria of successful job matching have not been analysed and job supervisors have relied on experience rather than objective standards in recruitment. This study aimed to explore the profile of successful clients working in 'shop sales' in a supportive environment using a neurocognitive assessment protocol, and to validate the proto

Employers' Experience on Involvement in Sickness Absence/Return to Work Support for Employees with Cancer in Small Enterprises.

PURPOSE: Return to work (RTW) is important for employees who have survived cancer, yet it is challenging for employers. Small enterprises (< 100 employees) might have limited resources to facilitate RTW of cancer survivors. The purpose of this article is to examine how such employers engage in the support of RTW and to uncover their needs. METHODS: Eleven owners and one HR manager representing 12 small enterprises (various sectors) were interviewed regarding their experience with RTW of employees surviving cancer. We conducted a thematic analysis with aspects of Grounded Theory. RESULTS: The

An evaluation of an employment pilot to support forensic mental health service users into work and vocational activities.

BACKGROUND: Few employment programmes exist to support forensic service users with severe mental health problems and a criminal history. Little is known about how best to achieve this. The Employment and Social Inclusion Project (ESIP) was developed and piloted to support forensic service users into employment and vocational activities. AIMS: This pilot service evaluation aimed to assess the number of service users who secured employment/vocational activities and explored services users' and staff experiences. METHOD: Quantitative data were collected to record the characteristics of particip

Meaningful lives: Supporting young people with psychosis in education, training and employment: an international consensus statement.

AIM: Unemployment is the major disability faced by people with psychotic illness. Unemployment rates of 75–95% are found among those with schizophrenia. Unemployment is associated with poorer social and economic inclusion, greater symptomatology, decreased autonomy and generally poorer life functioning. Unemployment also makes up over half of the total costs associated with psychotic illness. METHODS: A meeting was convened in London in June 2008. Invitees to this meeting included people from the USA, Canada and the UK interested in vocational intervention in early psychosis from either a res

Clients' views and experiences of individual placement and support: an employment program for people in treatment for substance use.

BACKGROUND: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) was originally developed to help people with serious mental illnesses into competitive employment but has recently shown positive results when delivered to people in treatment for substance use. This paper explores clients' views and experiences of IPS for substance use to understand how the program is working across England, United Kingdom, and whether any improvements can be made. METHODS: A longitudinal qualitative study with 48 new IPS clients was conducted between January 2024 and August 2025. Participants were interviewed up to four tim

[Work and Employment Situation of People with Mental Illness Receiving Independent Supported Housing: An Analysis of Routine Data from a Community Psychiatry Service].

OBJECTIVES: Due to insufficient empirical data on the occupational participation of people affected by severe mental illness receiving integration assistance, routine data from a community psychiatry service were evaluated. METHODS: Reference workers filled out a short questionnaire on different occupational and employment aspects of their clients from supported housing/floating outreach. In addition to descriptive and exploratory analyses, overall results from previous survey rounds were also evaluated. RESULTS: N=1418 individuals (M=47.6 years) could be included, of whom approximately 45%

Protocol for a multi-centre, definitive randomised controlled trial of the effectiveness of Individual Placement and Support for employment support among people with alcohol and drug dependence.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment is highly prevalent in populations with alcohol and drug dependence and the employment support offered in addiction-treatment programmes is ineffective. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based intervention for competitive employment. IPS has been extensively studied in severe mental illness and physical disabilities, but there have been no formal randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in alcohol and drug dependence. The Individual Placement and Support for Alcohol and Drug Dependence (IPS-AD) study should determine whether IPS for patients with alcohol
