This paper relates the neglected history of an idealistic, secret medical fraternity which existed briefly in Lexington, Kentucky, during the first half of the 19th century. It was created for students in the Medical Department at Transylvania University, the fifth US medical school, founded in 1799. One goal of the fraternity was to counter the widespread dissension and often violent quarrels among doctors that characterized American medicine of that period. And to that end, it was among the first to promote Thomas Percival's code of medical ethics in this country. Branches of the fraternity

INTRODUCTION: In medical research involving human subjects, ethical review is essential to protect individuals. However, concerns have been raised about variations in ethical review opinions and a decline in review quality. Adequately protecting human subjects requires multifaceted opinions from ethics committee members. Despite the need to increase the number of committee members, resources are limited. To address these challenges, we explored the use of a generative pre- learning transformer, an interactive artificial intelligence (AI) tool, to discuss ethical issues in medical research.

BACKGROUND: Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) is legally permitted in a growing number of jurisdictions, and in 6, it can currently be followed by organ donation. Organ donation following MAiD offers patients an opportunity to address transplant needs as a final act of altruism, but it also raises complex ethical questions that require strong safeguards to protect patients, professionals, and public trust.
METHODS: We identified key ethical issues and safeguards by analyzing guidelines and protocols from the 6 countries where organ donation following MAiD is performed: Australia, Belgium, Ca

OBJECTIVE: To characterize clinical ethical dilemmas that arise in the care of international patients in the United States and to propose preventive ethics solutions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of ethics consultations placed on international patients at a quaternary medical center over a 19-year period (February 8, 2006, to April 5, 2024).
RESULTS: Forty-nine international patients met inclusion criteria. Most were adults (88%) with a primary diagnosis of malignancy (45%). Most patients came from countries in the Middle East (84%), spoke Arabic (73%), and

This narrative reflection explores the intersection of clinical medicine and carceral constraints through the experience of a fourth-year medical student completing a clinical rotation at the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. By documenting the challenges of managing chronic disease, acute trauma, and substance use disorders within a high-security environment, the author illustrates how incarceration functions as a primary determinant of health. Key themes include the role of physician advocacy in navigating institutional barriers, the ethical complexities of treating patients with criminal

Donation physicians are specialists with expertise in organ and tissue donation and have been recognized internationally as a key contributor to improving organ and tissue donation services. Subsequent to a 2011 Canadian Critical Care Society-Canadian Blood Services consultation, the donation physician role has been gradually implemented in Canada. These professionals are generally intensive care unit physicians with an enhanced focus and expertise in organ/tissue donation. They must manage the dual obligation of caring for dying patients and their families while providing and/or improving org

Although both codes of practice and virtue ethics are integral to the ethos and history of "medical professionalism", the two trends appear mutually incompatible. Hence, in the first part of the paper we explore and explicate this apparent conflict and seek a direction for medical education. The theoretical and empirical literature indicates that moral deliberation may transcend the incompatibilities between the formal and the virtuous, may enhance moral and other aspects of personal sensitivity, may help design and improve other parts of the curricula, and may foster self-awareness and clarif

The debate on euthanasia and medically assisted suicide remains a complex issue, full of ethical, moral and legal implications, which has aroused strong emotions and conflicting opinions both in Italy and around the world. In Italy, the legal context surrounding euthanasia and medically assisted suicide is still characterized by an absence of specific rules regulating these practices. This has led to a situation in which the discussion on the end of life remains open and the practice of euthanasia remains illegal as the only interruption of life-sustaining treatments is allowed at present in a

The rapid growth of medical tourism, the provision of elective healthcare across borders, has raised complex ethical challenges. In Iran, the significant expansion of this industry can be attributed to advanced expertise and relatively low costs. This qualitative study examined the critical ethical issues in medical tourism in Iran through semi-structured interviews with purposively selected ethics scholars, managers, healthcare providers, facilitators, and international patients, using maximum variation sampling. Data were transcribed, analyzed, and refined through expert consensus, yielding

BackgroundJapan has been promoting the use of medical and long-term care robots to reduce the workload of healthcare professionals. In home-visit nursing, where the number of older adults and patients with dementia is increasing, robots may provide benefits, such as supporting infection control and physically demanding care. However, implementing these technologies may also generate new ethical challenges.ObjectiveTo clarify home-visiting nurses' perceptions and the ethical issues regarding the introduction of medical and caregiving robots into home-visiting nursing field in Japan.MethodsA mix

The provision of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a medical intervention that requires an indication, a therapeutic goal, and the consent of the patient. The decision-making process surrounding MNT often involves complex ethical considerations. The aim of this guideline is to provide practical recommendations on an ethical approach to the decision-making process in clinical nutrition. This practical guideline was developed by an international multidisciplinary working group. The practical, solely consensus-based guideline is based on and updates the 2016 ESPEN Guideline on Ethical Aspects of

Medical negligence, a critical intersection of ethical obligations and legal standards, is an evolving concern in Nepal's medico-legal landscape. This article explores the concept of duty of care, which is fundamental to medical negligence, and emphasizes the need for a robust legal framework to ensure justice for both the patients and the healthcare professionals. The key elements of negligence: duty, dereliction, direct causation, and damage are examined alongside international precedents like Donoghue v. Stevenson, Bolam v. Friern Hospital, Bo-litho v. City and Hackney and Montgomery v. Lan

Networks of distributed interactive micro-implants could enhance the treatment of otoneurological conditions such as tinnitus or restore impaired complex physiological/ motor functions such as gastrointestinal motility or grasping. For this, an electrical stimulation of neural and muscular tissue is a key prerequisite. Challenges in the development of such interactive micro-implants are the complex human-machine interface, the wireless power supply, and the long-term stability of implants as well as secure and safe signal transmission. This paper addresses all these topics as well as the ethic
