We report an unusual case of self-mutilation by insertion of multiple foreign bodies in the orbit. A 26-year-old female psychiatric patient with a severe emotionally unstable personality disorder was reviewed in the ophthalmology clinic. She had allegedly inserted a metal staple into her right eye 2 days previously and was complaining of pain around the right eye. Radiography showed multiple foreign bodies in the right orbit and one in the left orbit. Self-mutilation in psychiatric patients has been well documented. The management of nonorganic, nontoxic intraorbital foreign bodies is discusse

A survey of 198 patients (210 eyes) with intraocular or intraorbital foreign bodies is presented. Most were males between 16 and 30 years of age, and 6.1% of cases were bilateral. The commonest cause was a flying particle while using a hand hammer, followed by fragments of bomb and mine blasts. Intraorbital foreign bodies occurred in 78 eyes and intraocular foreign bodies in 132 eyes. Irreparable damage caused 13 eyes (6.2%) to be enucleated. Ten eyes developed severe endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis requiring evisceration. One hundred and thirty-four (63.8%) foreign bodies were removed, and

BACKGROUND: Intralenticular metallic foreign bodies may be well tolerated for many years.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old caucasian man was referred with an intralenticular metallic foreign body present in the left eye for five days. Following initial treatment with topical steroid and antibiotic, the lens remained clear and visual acuity normal. Two years later the left eye developed an anterior uveitis, with reduced vision. A left phacoemulsification lens extraction with removal of the intralenticular foreign body and insertion of a posterior chamber intraocular lens was performed.
CONCLUSION:

Corneal foreign bodies are a frequent source of ocular trauma. Patients presenting with corneal foreign bodies deserve careful evaluation to determine the degree of injury. This article reviews the instrumentation and procedures used for removal of corneal foreign bodies and rust rings, as well as appropriate follow-up care. Optometrists, as primary eye care providers, should be comfortable with the treatment and management of this common corneal injury.

BB shots and other spherical foreign bodies produce long chains of rapidly successive echo spikes which gradually decrease in height. These patterns are specific for this type of foreign bodies and allow their reliable detection and accurate localization. A-scan echography has become a very useful addition to X-ray examination in order to determine whether such foreign bodies are intra- or extraocular. Echography also helps to localize such foreign bodies during surgery and to evaluate the posterior segment of the eye in the presence of opaque ocular media (hemorrhages, cataract). Although it

Foreign bodies in the lacrimal drainage system pose a substantial challenge in clinical practice due to their potential morbidity and diverse origins. Many foreign bodies are inorganic; however, organic foreign bodies, although uncommon, present diagnostic challenges. We present the case of a 57-year-old woman who had epiphora in her right eye. Patient's physical examination suggested an obstruction in the nasolacrimal duct. An external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) was scheduled. The surgery uncovered a polyp-like intrasaccal structure, which was subsequently identified as an organic foreign bo

Postinjury endophthalmitis is the eye infection with the worst prognosis. A retrospective 9-year study was made of penetrating eye injuries, with an analysis of the incidence of infection and its relation to the type of wound and the presence of intraocular foreign bodies. There were 403 cases of penetrating eye injury; of these, 233 affected the cornea and 170 involved the posterior pole. Intraocular foreign bodies were present in 40 cases. Endophthalmitis developed in 4.2% of cases (17/403), and was more common in patients with posterior pole involvement (7%) than in purely corneal trauma (2

Penetrating eye injuries often lead to serious symptoms, such as severe inflammation and pain, especially if residual intraocular foreign bodies are present. This case report describes a patient who suffered a penetrating corneal injury resulting in eyelashes being displaced into the anterior chamber. Although no treatment was given the anterior chamber of the eye did not show any inflammatory reactions 2 weeks after the trauma. In addition to the accident mechanism the material of which the foreign body is composed plays a decisive role. While iron, copper and wooden foreign bodies lead to se

INTRODUCTION: Ocular trauma is considered a health care problem because is an important cause for visual impairment. Intraocular foreign bodies are related to activities involving usage of metallic objects, but other materials can be present in the eye and have to be diagnosed and localized. Ultrasound biomicroscopy is an adequate subsidiary tool to evaluate an anterior chamber intraocular foreign body.
PURPOSE: To characterize nature, localization, dimensions of foreign bodies and associated lesions to the anterior segment using ultrasound biomicroscopy.
METHODS: Retrospective clinical stud

Many patients with symptomatic eye conditions present initially to their primary care physician. Comprehensive treatment of such conditions as dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, styes, chalazia, conjunctivitis, congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, superficial foreign bodies, corneal abrasion, and subconjunctival hemorrhage can often be provided in the primary care setting. Patients with persistent or severe conditions, particularly those involving foreign bodies and corneal abrasions due to high-velocity injuries, should be referred for immediate care by an ophthalmologist.

Ocular foreign bodies may be threat to vision loss. Superficial foreign body present on the conjunctiva or cornea can be easily detected and removed, and may not cause much harm if treated appropriately without delay. Subconjunctival foreign bodies are relatively rare, commonly missed and present as foreign body granuloma, even if they are visible their extent in deeper tissue is difficult to assess. Foreign bodies penetrating the ocular coat can result in partial or full thickness penetration of cornea and sclera with or without involvement of posterior segment. Here we present a case of subc

A clinicopathologic study of eight human eyes containing intraocular copper foreign bodies was undertaken. These foreign bodies, which had been retained in the eyes from three weeks to 22 years, were analyzed by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry and x-ray diffraction to determine their chemical composition. Copper deposits in Descemet membrane, vitreous, internal limiting membrane of the retina, and fibrous capsule around the foreign bodies could be demonstrated by rhodanine, rubeanic acid, and alizarin blue stains and were correlated with clinical findings and pathologic changes. Eyes with

Intralenticular foreign bodies comprise about 5% to 10% of all intraocular foreign bodies and can result in serious complications. The management depends on some factors like size, location, material type and the risk of infection. We present a patient with an intralenticular metal foreign body in the left eye that, following initial treatment with topical steroid and antibiotic, underwent lens aspiration with removal of the intralenticular foreign body and insertion of a posterior chamber intraocular lens with good visual outcome.

BACKGROUND: Determining the precise location of intraocular foreign bodies is crucial for the management of patients with open-globe injury. Computed tomography is the most common method for detecting intraocular foreign bodies in the posterior segment. In this article, we describe three cases of open-globe injury with different types of intraocular foreign bodies in the posterior segment that were accurately located using computed tomography scans and B-scan ultrasonography.
CASE PRESENTATION: Each of the three cases of open-globe injury described in this report had different types of ocular

INTRODUCTION: Corneal foreign bodies account for nearly one-third of all eye injuries and are a common emergency in ophthalmology. While many cases are straightforward, involving clear diagnosis and treatment, some present significant challenges due to the complexity of the foreign body involved.
OBSERVATION: A 20-year-old male presented with discomfort in his right eye following an accident while cutting a tree without wearing protective eyewear. Examination using slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a reed foreign body embedded in the cornea. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OC
