The myogenic mechanism of synchronization and coordination for uterine myocytes contractions during labor.

The article summarized the results of many years studying of synchronization and coordination of uterine myocytes contractile activity during physiological labor contractions. The authors suggest that the physiological basis for these processes is the mechanoreceptor mechanism of feedback for the stretching which is one of the fundamental mechanisms for control contractile activity of uterine myocytes during parturition.

Altered interlimb coupling during unimanual and bimanual force control in aging and Parkinson's disease.

Bimanual coordination depends on the ability to flexibly regulate interlimb coupling while maintaining independent control of each limb. Aging and Parkinson's disease (PD) may disrupt this balance by altering sensorimotor regulation and shared neural input between limbs. This study examined force control, coordination dynamics, and physiological coupling during unimanual and bimanual isometric force tasks in healthy young adults (HYA), healthy older adults (HOA), and individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Participants completed 30 s unimanual and bimanual force tasks with target forces set

Developing negative split pacing in endurance athletes: practical guidelines and training models.

Negative split pacing-finishing the second half of a race faster than the first-is a hallmark of elite endurance performance and a key indicator of physiological control, fatigue resistance, and strategic pacing literacy. Rather than being an inherent talent, it represents a trainable skill integrating physiological, cognitive, and behavioral regulation. This mini review synthesizes evidence from performance analyses, physiological studies, and coaching practice to outline how negative split capacity can be systematically developed. We summarize training foundations, mesocycle design, and moni

Exploring enablers and barriers to the use of chest compression feedback devices in advanced life support: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In sudden cardiac arrest, high-quality chest compressions are crucial for survival with favorable neurological outcomes. Chest compression feedback devices improve chest compression quality and the likelihood of achieving return of spontaneous circulation. However, implementation remains challenging. Understanding enablers and barriers is essential to inform implementation strategies and device design. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative exploratory study using semi-structured interviews with 15 healthcare professionals from pre- and in-hospital advanced life support settings in N

The stress response in headache sufferers: physiological and psychological reactivity.

When examining headache sufferers' reactivity to stress, few studies attend to differing characteristics of the environment. In this study, we evaluated the influence of the clarity/ambiguity and positive/negative valence of an event on subjects' physiological and psychological reactivity. Migraine (n = 30), tension (n = 39), and control (n = 35) subjects participated in a laboratory experience in which they had to practice and then deliver a news story to a videocamera (similar to a newscaster on television). During this experience, they received performance feedback and were instructed to tr

Central anorexigenic actions of bile acids are mediated by TGR5.

Bile acids (BAs) are signalling molecules that mediate various cellular responses in both physiological and pathological processes. Several studies report that BAs can be detected in the brain1, yet their physiological role in the central nervous system is still largely unknown. Here we show that postprandial BAs can reach the brain and activate a negative-feedback loop controlling satiety in response to physiological feeding via TGR5, a G-protein-coupled receptor activated by multiple conjugated and unconjugated BAs2 and an established regulator of peripheral metabolism3-8. Notably, periphera

Variable task difficulty with augmented sensory feedback for motor training in virtual reality.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined how motor task difficulty and augmented sensory feedback (ASF) modality influence task performance, physiological responses, and perceptual experience during virtual reality (VR)-based upper-limb motor training. Building on related brace- and VR-based ASF platforms previously examined in neurotypical and spinal cord injury cohorts, the long-term goal is to support neurorehabilitation-oriented adaptive VR training; however, the present study used neurotypical participants as an initial validation step. METHODS: Fourteen right-handed neurotypical participants u

Expectations about arousal and nocturnal panic.

Expectations about arousal were examined in relation to nocturnal panic (NP). Eighteen panic disorder patients suffering from NP attacks and 18 control individuals were assigned randomly to conditions in which they were informed that audio feedback signals reflected heightened arousal that was either (a) expected and harmless or (b) unexpected. Participants relaxed and slept for 45 to 60 min, followed by presentation of periodic audio feedback signals. Physiological recording was continuous while subjective measures were collected at completion of the signals phase. NP patients in the unexpect

Cardiac dynamics during social evaluative feedback: Evidence from intersubject representational similarity analysis.

In everyday interactions, social evaluative feedback can elicit defensive responses that vary across individuals, underscoring the need to clarify the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this variability. This study examined the cardiac correlates of defensive responses to social feedback, focusing on how cardiac activity reflects individual differences in self-protective behavior. Participants completed a mobile-based reciprocal artwork evaluation task while cardiac activity was continuously monitored via photoplethysmography using a wearable smartwatch. During the task, participants re

Cocaine chemogenetics blunts drug-seeking by synthetic physiology.

Chemical feedback is ubiquitous in physiology but is challenging to study without perturbing basal functions. One example is addictive drugs, which elicit a positive-feedback cycle of drug-seeking and ingestion by acting on the brain to increase dopamine signalling1-3. However, interfering with this process by altering basal dopamine also adversely affects learning, movement, attention and wakefulness4. Here, inspired by physiological control systems, we developed a highly selective synthetic physiology approach to interfere with the positive-feedback cycle of addiction by installing a cocaine

The treatment of fear of flying: a controlled study of imaginal and virtual reality graded exposure therapy.

The goal of this study was to determine if virtual reality graded exposure therapy (VRGET) was equally efficacious, more efficacious, or less efficacious, than imaginal exposure therapy in the treatment of fear of flying. Thirty participants (Age = 39.8 +/- 9.7) with confirmed DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia fear of flying were randomly assigned to one of three groups: VRGET with no physiological feedback (VRGETno), VRGET with physiological feedback (VRGETpm), or systematic desensitization with imaginal exposure therapy (IET). Relaxation and skin conductance feedback in the control of reactions to cognitive tasks.

Peripheral physiological activity and verbal ratings of tension and nervousness were assessed during instructed relaxation, and relaxation assisted by feedback of skin conductance level (SCL). Sixteen volunteers attempted to use each strategy in turn in a cross-over design. Responses were monitored both during quiet relaxation, and throughout the performance of taxing cognitive tasks. Th electrodermal feedback made no difference to the reductions in SCL, heart rate or subjective ratings, when relaxation was carried out in undisturbed conditions. Following training, reactions to cognitive tasks

Deciphering the Interlinked CXCR4-Mediated Feedback Loop Among Signaling Pathways in Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic chronic wounds and amputations are very serious complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) that result from an integration factor, including oxygen deprivation, elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduced angiogenesis, and microbial invasion. These causative factors lead to tenacious wounds in an inflammatory state, which eventually results in tissue aging and necrosis. Wound healing in DM potentially targets C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) regulates several signalling pathways. The CXCR4 signalling pathway integrated with phospholipase C (PLC)/protein kinase-C (PKC) Ca2+ pat

Constructing an NF-κB Oscillator for Dual-Input Control in Yeast.

Interactions between biological oscillators and environmental periodic signals are crucial for the correct regulation of cellular behaviors. Most synthetic biological oscillators only respond to one signal that initiates the oscillation, limiting the study of the interaction between the biological oscillator and multiple environmental cues. Here, we present a detailed protocol for constructing a synthetic oscillatory circuit that can respond to both α-factor and ethanol inputs. Based on the mammalian NF-κB negative feedback loop, this circuit produces sustained and tunable oscillation in the b

Disrupting neuro-immune feedback loops: novel targets to amplify cancer immunotherapy.

Nervous system and immune system have tight interactions that modulate both nerves and immune cells' activities. The interplay between the nervous and immune systems within the tumor microenvironment is a critical yet underexplored determinant of cancer immunotherapy efficacy. This review presents a new model called the Neuro-Immune Feedback Loop, which suggests that two-way communication (like the immunosuppressive effects of norepinephrine and the influence of cytokines on nerve activity) creates self-perpetuating cycles that tumors use to avoid immune responses. We compile evidence regardin

Basic and Translational Neuroscience of Childhood-Onset Dystonia: A Control-Theory Perspective.

Dystonia is a collection of symptoms with involuntary muscle activation causing hypertonia, hyperkinetic movements, and overflow. In children, dystonia can have numerous etiologies with varying neuroanatomic distribution. The semiology of dystonia can be explained by gain-of-function failure of a feedback controller that is responsible for stabilizing posture and movement. Because postural control is maintained by a widely distributed network, many different anatomic regions may be responsible for symptoms of dystonia, although all features of dystonia can be explained by uncontrolled activati

Perceivers vary in their capacity to benefit from feedback in learning to perceive length by dynamic touch.

Earlier ecologically motivated studies have revealed substantial individual differences in perceptual learning: Individuals varied in their ability to attune to a specifying variable. A possible source of these individual differences is between-subjects variation in the capacity to benefit from feedback. Although this hypothesis was postulated by Withagen & van Wermeskerken (2009), their experiment could not exclude other factors that might be involved. The aim of the present experiment was to provide a more critical test of their hypothesis. To this end, we trained two groups of participants

DynPeak: an algorithm for pulse detection and frequency analysis in hormonal time series.

The endocrine control of the reproductive function is often studied from the analysis of luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatile secretion by the pituitary gland. Whereas measurements in the cavernous sinus cumulate anatomical and technical difficulties, LH levels can be easily assessed from jugular blood. However, plasma levels result from a convolution process due to clearance effects when LH enters the general circulation. Simultaneous measurements comparing LH levels in the cavernous sinus and jugular blood have revealed clear differences in the pulse shape, the amplitude and the baseline. Besi

Role of fetal membranes in signaling of fetal maturation and parturition.

The fetal membranes fulfill several functions during pregnancy. In addition to containing the products of conception and amniotic fluid, they presumably have barrier functions and fulfill paracrine signaling functions between the maternal (decidual) and fetal compartments. As the membranes are in an ideal place to receive both maternal and fetal signals and transmit signals to uterine myometrium, there has been a specific focus on the role of membranes in the initiation and maintenance of parturition. In this review, we summarize the data obtained in our laboratories as well as the data report
