Dosimetric evaluation of a novel high dose rate (HDR) intraluminal / interstitial brachytherapy applicator for gastrointestinal and bladder cancers.

High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is one of the accepted treatment modalities in gastro-intestinal tract and bladder carcinomas. Considering the shortcoming of contact brachytherapy routinely used in gastrointestinal tract in treatment of big tumors or invasive method of bladder treatment, an intraluminal applicator with the capability of insertion into the tumor depth seems to be useful. This study presents some dosimetric evaluations to introduce this applicator to the clinical use. The radiation attenuation characteristics of the applicator were evaluated by means of two dosimetric methods

A Monte Carlo approach for small electron beam dosimetry.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In treatments where it is necessary to conform the field shape yielding a very small effective beam area, dosimetry and conventional treatment planning may be inaccurate. The Monte Carlo (MC) method can be an alternative to verify dose calculations. A conjunctival mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues lymphoma is presented, to show the importance of an independent assessment in critical situations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this work, the MC technique has been employed using the program BEAM (based on EGS4 code). Electron beam simulation has been performed and the results

SU-E-T-95: Investigation of 3D Dosimetry for an Anthropomorphic Spine Phantom.

PURPOSE: To evaluate 3D dosimetry for a spinal cord treatment plan delivery using the Radiological Physics Center's (RPC) anthropomorphic spine phantom. METHODS: The RPC's spine phantom currently uses radiochromic film and thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) to evaluate spinal metastases treatments. A second dosimetry insert for the phantom was created to hold a PRESAGE® 3D dosimeter which matched the location of the TLD and film in the original insert. The phantom was CT imaged with each insert and an IMRT treatment plan was developed. The IMRT plan was delivered to the phantom twice; once wi

Measuring dose in lung identifies peripheral tumour dose inaccuracy in SBRT audit.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung tumours has become a mainstay of clinical practice worldwide. Measurements in anthropomorphic phantoms enable verification of patient dose in clinically realistic scenarios. Correction factors for reporting dose to the tissue equivalent materials in a lung phantom are presented in the context of a national dosimetry audit for SBRT. Analysis of dosimetry audit results is performed showing inaccuracies of common dose calculation algorithms in soft tissue lung target, inhale lung material and at tissue interfaces. METHODS: Monte Carlo based

Agreement between diary records of time spent outdoors and personal ultraviolet radiation dose measurements.

Little is known about the validity of self-recorded sun exposure and time spent outdoors for epidemiological research. The aims of the current study were to assess how well participants' self-recorded time outdoors compared to objective measurements of personal UVR doses. We enrolled 124 volunteers aged 40 and above who were identified from targeted subgroups of US radiologic technologists. Each volunteer was instructed to wear a polysulfone (PS) dosimeter to measure UVR on their left shoulder and to complete a daily activity diary, listing all activities undertaken in each 30 min interval bet

A comparison of two bolus types for radiotherapy following immediate breast reconstruction.

Immediate breast Reconstruction is increasing in use in Australia and accounts for almost 10% of breast cancer patients (Roder in Breast 22:1220-1225, 2013). Many treatments include a bolus to increase dose to the skin surface. Air gaps under bolus increase uncertainty in dosimetry and many bolus types are unable to conform to the shape of the breast or are not flexible throughout treatment if there is a swelling induced contour change. This study investigates the use of two bolus types that can be manufactured in house-wet combine and ThermoBolus. Wet combine is a material composed of several

Comparative skin dose measurement in the treatment of anal canal cancer: conventional versus conformal therapy.

The subject of this work was to compare the effect of Conventional and Conformal techniques, used for anal canal cancer treatments, on the skin dose deposition. Skin dose was measured on a Rando phantom using XR-T GAFCHROMIC film. A skin surface dose histogram was constructed and a skin dose profile in the sagittal direction of the perineal region was measured, for both techniques. The measured skin dose in the anterior and posterior region of the skin exposed to radiation is from two to ten times higher when using a conventional technique. In the perineal region, an 85% of the prescription is

The dose distribution of medium energy electron boosts to the laryngectomy stoma.

An en face, medium energy electron boost of approximately 10 Gy is often given to stomal and peristomal tissues. Because the boost is considered a simple treatment, CT-based treatment planning is rarely used. Further, the results of such a plan might be inaccurate, as the complex dose distribution surrounding the stoma air cavity is poorly modeled by many treatment planning systems. We constructed three phantoms-two with a central vertical cavity to mimic the size and shape of the stoma and proximal trachea and one with a cavity inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal to better simulate anato

Delivery of Agarose-aided Sprays to the Posterior Nose for Mucosa Immunization and Short-term Protection against Infectious Respiratory Diseases.

AIM: The study aimed to deliver sprays to the posterior nose for mucosa immunization or short-term protection. BACKGROUND: Respiratory infectious diseases often enter the human body through the nose. Sars- Cov-2 virus preferentially binds to the ACE2-rich tissue cells in the Nasopharynx (NP). Delivering medications to the nose, especially to the NP region, provides either a short-term protective/ therapeutic layer or long-term mucosa immunization. Hydrogel-aided medications can assist film formation, prolong film life, and control drug release. However, conventional nasal sprays have failed t

Pulse-resolved spatial dosimetry of ultra-high dose rate electron FLASH beams using optical imaging.

PURPOSE: Ultra-high dose rate FLASH radiotherapy has shown the potential to reduce normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. However, investigating the underlying radiobiological mechanisms requires dosimetry systems capable of resolving spatial and temporal characteristics of FLASH beams. In this work, an optical imaging system for pulse-resolved two-dimensional dosimetry of a 10 MeV electron FLASH beam with a PRF of 400 Hz was developed and characterized. METHODS: The system is based on a plastic scintillation plate imaged by a high-speed CMOS camera operating at 800 frames pe

Evaluation of image quality and fetal dose through current modulation CT-scan using pregnancy phantoms.

Computed Tomography (CT) is often required in special circumstances during pregnancy to determine internal medicine, specifically when information from other imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is still inadequate. In CT-Chest, abdomen, and pelvis (CAP) examination, direct irradiation of the fetal is necessary, indicating that the potential for fetal exposure must be considered. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of current modulation on image quality and fetal absorbed dose in pregnancy CT scan. Calculation using IndoseCT and film dosimeters w

Scattering of therapeutic radiation in the presence of craniofacial bone reconstruction materials.

PURPOSE: Radiation scattering from bone reconstruction materials can cause problems from prolonged healing to osteoradionecrosis. Glass fiber reinforced composite (FRC) has been introduced for bone reconstruction in craniofacial surgery but the effects during radiotherapy have not been previously studied. The purpose of this study was to compare the attenuation and back scatter caused by different reconstruction materials during radiotherapy, especially FRC with bioactive glass (BG) and titanium. METHODS: The effect of five different bone reconstruction materials on the surrounding tissue dur

Experimental Platform for Ultra-high Dose Rate FLASH Irradiation of Small Animals Using a Clinical Linear Accelerator.

PURPOSE: A key factor limiting the effectiveness of radiation therapy is normal tissue toxicity, and recent preclinical data have shown that ultra-high dose rate irradiation (>50 Gy/s, "FLASH") potentially mitigates this effect. However, research in this field has been strongly limited by the availability of FLASH irradiators suitable for small animal experiments. We present a simple methodologic approach for FLASH electron small animal irradiation with a clinically available linear accelerator (LINAC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We investigated the FLASH irradiation potential of a Varian Clinac

How significant are the risks from occupational exposure to ionizing radiation?

Radiologists and other physicians practicing in specialties where their principal operational procedures involve the use of ionizing radiation have health risks associated with their occupational exposures. Based on two years of film badge records from this institution, it was estimated that the general radiologists received an annual occupational dose equivalent of 350 mrems. The corresponding doses for therapeutic radiologists and those practicing special procedures and cardiac catheterization were 110 mrems and 550 mrems. The estimated excess cancer deaths for general radiologists would be

Comprehensive stereotactic radiosurgery platform characterization: A novel end-to-end approach with anthropomorphic 3D dosimetry.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a widely employed strategy for intracranial metastases, utilizing linear accelerators and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). Ensuring precise linear accelerator performance is crucial, given the small planning target volume (PTV) margins. Rapid dose falloff is vital to minimize brain radiation necrosis. Despite advances in SRS planning, tools for end-to-end testing of SRS treatments are lacking, hindering confidence in the procedure. PURPOSE: This study introduces a novel end-to-end three-dimensional (3D) anthropomorphic dosimetry system fo
