The use of geographic information systems as a forensic tool to investigate sources of marine mammal entanglement in fisheries.

Commercial fisheries represent a significant anthropogenic threat to marine mammal survival. Causes of marine mammal mortality are commonly determined by detailed necropsies of stranded carcasses. Gross evidence of entanglement in a fishery might include gear attached to the body, internal indications of asphyxiation and trauma, or gear markings on the epidermis. As gear is often fishery-specific, wound patterns on the epidermis that are created by entanglements in fishing gear may serve to identify possible sources of mortality. For this study, tools within the Environmental Systems Research

Determinants of fish catch and post-harvest fish spoilage in small-scale marine fisheries in the Bagamoyo district, Tanzania.

The fisheries sector of Tanzania is dominated by small-scale fishers who produce up to 95% of the total amount of fish caught in the country. The small-scale fisheries are constrained by inadequate infrastructure, including a lack of capacity for processing and cold storage facilities, poor transportation and fishing tools that increase post-harvest losses. Small-scale fishers lack sufficient capital and skills to invest in modern fishing technologies. Additionally, social-demographic aspects of the fishers, such as education level, gender, age, fishing experience and training influence access

Anisakis Allergy: Is Aquacultured Fish a Safe and Alternative Food to Wild-Capture Fisheries for Anisakis simplex-Sensitized Patients?

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex (A. simplex) infection, in humans, causes a series of clinical manifestations affecting the gastro-intestinal tract known as Anisakiasis/Anisakidosis. Patients may also present allergic manifestations such as hives and/or angioedema and even anaphylactic shock. The aim of this study was to investigate whether aquacultured fish could be considered A.simplex-free food and constitute a safe, alternative, wild-capture fish food for Gastro-Allergic Anisakiasis (GAA)-sensitized subjects. METHODS: Protein extracts from A. simplex larvae in the third stage (L3) and from e

The Complete Chromosome-Level Genome and Mitogenome Assembly of Seriola lalandi lalandi (Yellowtail Kingfish) for Aquaculture and Fisheries Management.

Seriola lalandi comprises three genetically distinct clades, with S. lalandi lalandi inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere. While a chromosome-level genome exists for the Northwestern Pacific S. lalandi aureovittata, no such resource is available for S. lalandi lalandi, limiting genetic research and aquaculture advancements. This study presents a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of S. lalandi lalandi using Illumina short-read, long-read (ONT) and Hi-C. A total of 289.12 Gb of raw genomic data were generated, and a final assembly of 644 Mb was produced with 99.64% of the assembled bas

Health-related dimensions of fishers for sustainable commercial fisheries in the Atlantic Gulf of Guinea: Ecological and social assessments.

Health considerations are seldom integrated into non-state voluntary sustainability certification standards, despite industrial fishing being one of the most hazardous occupations, often resulting in significant health risks for fishers. These challenges not only affect individual fishers but also have broader implications for the socio-ecological sustainability of fisheries. This study explores the effects of certification programs on industrial fishing activities and their health and safety dimensions within a socio-ecological framework, focusing on the Atlantic shrimp fishery in Nigeria. Ecological legacy of Indigenous dispossession: disruption of ancestral sea gardens by commercial clam fisheries in British Columbia, 1882-1985.

Ancestral sea gardens in British Columbia (BC) were managed to provide high long-term yields for millennia before European contact. While the ubiquity and productivity of sea gardens are well known, the ecological and cultural impact of the transition from ancestral to settler-colonial fisheries has not been investigated in a historical ecology context. Here, we examine that transition in the BC clam fishery, documenting the social and legal mechanisms used to dispossess Indigenous clam harvesters and identifying the ecological impacts of settler-colonial fisheries. Our results document a rapi

Investigation of plastic debris ingestion by four species of sea turtles collected as bycatch in pelagic Pacific longline fisheries.

Ingestion of marine debris is an established threat to sea turtles. The amount, type, color and location of ingested plastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of 55 sea turtles from Pacific longline fisheries from 2012 to 2016 were quantified, and compared across species, turtle length, body condition, sex, capture location, season and year. Six approaches for quantifying amounts of ingested plastic strongly correlated with one another and included: number of pieces, mass, volume and surface area of plastics, ratio of plastic mass to body mass, and percentage of the mass of gut contents consisti

Increased Sensitivity Loop-Amplification Using Activated Carbon and Bentonite for the Detection of Vibrio spp. in Fishery Products.

The Vibrio genus has more than 100 species, of which 12 are considered pathogenic for humans; species most frequently isolated in food are V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, and V. alginolyticus. The main problem of identifying them through conventional microbiological methods is the high costs and long-term diagnosis. Loop-mediated isothermal Amplification (LAMP) was used for the identification of V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, and V. alginolyticus. Activated carbon with bentonite (ACB) was used to remove inhibitors, improving the sensitivity of the test; pH 6,

Chemical pollution impairs the health of fish species and fishery activities along the Algeria coastline, Mediterranean Sea.

Chronic exposure to multiple pollutants affects aquatic organisms, even at low concentrations, and can impair fishery activities along marine coastlines. The bioavailability of toxic metals and the presence of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in both water and sediment can explain the worst-case scenario of fish health and fishery production decline along the Algeria coastline. The hepatosomatic index (HIS), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and condition factor (K) in the studied species from the Algiers, Bou Ismail, and Zemmouri bays are the first indicators of the poor environmen

The protandric life history of the Northern spot shrimp Pandalus platyceros: molecular insights and implications for fishery management.

The Northern spot shrimp, Pandalus platyceros, a protandric hermaphrodite of commercial importance in North America, is the primary target species for shrimp fisheries within Southeast Alaska. Fishery data obtained from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game indicate that spot shrimp populations have been declining significantly over the past 25 years. We collected spot shrimps in Southeast Alaska and measured reproductive-related morphological, gonadal and molecular changes during the entire life history. The appendix masculina, a major sexual morphological indicator, is indicative of the rep

5-Sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate-based pretreatment for the modification of enzyme-linked immunoassay of fluoroquinolones in fishery products.

A simple, rapid sample extraction method for the determination of FQs was developed. Fishery samples were extracted with 2% of 5-sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate and the extracts were analyzed directly without any further purification or clean-up procedures. The FQs were determined with standards of 2% of 5-sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate in the concentration range of 0.1-25.6 μg L(-1), and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.1 μg L(-1). The matrix interference originated from fishery samples was eliminated by 2% of 5-sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate and did not interact with horseradish peroxidase (HR

Investigation of increased listeriosis revealed two fishery production plants with persistent Listeria contamination in Finland in 2010.

In 2010, a marked increase in listeriosis incidence was observed in Finland. Listeria monocytogenes PFGE profile 96 was responsible for one-fifth of the reported cases and a cluster of PFGE profile 62 was also detected. Investigations revealed two fishery production plants with persistent Listeria contamination. It appears likely that the plants were at least partly responsible for the increase of listeriosis. Epidemiological investigation revealed that 57% (31/54) of cases with underlying immunosuppressive condition or medication reported eating gravad or cold-smoked fish. Two public notices

Fishery resource utilization of a restored estuarine borrow pit: a beneficial use of dredged material case study.

Numerous pits in coastal waters are subject to degraded water quality and benthic habitat conditions, resulting in degraded fish habitat. A pit in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey (USA) was partially filled with dredged sediment to increase flushing, alleviate hypoxia, and enhance benthic assemblages. Restoration objectives were assessed in terms of benthic community parameters and fishery resource occupation. Restoration resulted in increased benthic diversity (bottom samples) and the absence of water column stratification. Fisheries resources occupied the entire water column, unlike pre-restoration

Pathology and distribution of sea turtles landed as bycatch in the Hawaii-based North Pacific pelagic longline fishery.

We examined the gross and microscopic pathology and distribution of sea turtles that were landed as bycatch from the Hawaii, USA-based pelagic longline fishery and known to be forced submerged. Olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) composed the majority of animals examined, and hook-induced perforation of the esophagus was the most common gross lesion followed by perforation of oral structures (tongue, canthus) and of flippers. Gross pathology in the lungs suggestive of drowning was seen in 23 of 71 turtles. Considering only the external gross findings, the pathologist and the observer

Connecting post-release mortality to the physiological stress response of large coastal sharks in a commercial longline fishery.

Bycatch mortality is a major factor contributing to shark population declines. Post-release mortality (PRM) is particularly difficult to quantify, limiting the accuracy of stock assessments. We paired blood-stress physiology with animal-borne accelerometers to quantify PRM rates of sharks caught in a commercial bottom longline fishery. Blood was sampled from the same individuals that were tagged, providing direct correlation between stress physiology and animal fate for sandbar (Carcharhinus plumbeus, N = 130), blacktip (C. limbatus, N = 105), tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier, N = 52), spinner (C. bre

An evaluation of strategies for restoring a degraded New Zealand scallop fishery using stochastic dynamic simulation modelling.

A decision-theoretical approach was used to evaluate strategies to rebuild a severely depleted scallop (Pecten novaezelandiae) populations in the Tasman Bay and Golden Bay of New Zealand. These strategies were: no intervention, cessation of seabed bottom contact fishing, and reduction of sediment and nutrient runoff from surrounding land through on-farm practices. Our approach combined outputs of estimated effects of on-farm practices on erosion and nutrient reduction with a stochastic dynamic model of the scallop populations. The most effective individual intervention is eliminating bottom co

Valorization of fishery byproducts: Large-scale production of olive flounder functional protein ingredients and their effects on muscle regeneration.

Use of olive flounder byproducts, which constitute nearly 50 % of the total fish mass, offers a promising strategy for maximizing protein-rich resources. In this study, we optimized a Prozyme 2000P® enzyme-assisted olive flounder byproduct hydrolysate (OFBP) for large-scale production using response surface methodology and evaluated its efficacy in muscle-atrophy models. The final OFBP exhibited 87.5 % protein content, with over 60 % of peptides under 700 Da, promoting high bioavailability and absorption. In vitro, OFBP (300 µg/mL) enhanced de novo protein synthesis in murine C2C12 myotubes by

An Overview of Multistate Outbreak Investigations of Salmonella Infections Linked to Fish and Fishery Products, United States - 2012-2021.

Salmonella infections linked to seafood consumption have the potential to cause serious illness, with reported incidence of foodborne illness associated with contaminated seafood increasing in the past decade. While technological advancements over the last decade have made significant progress in the detection, reporting, and determining the source of illness from bacterial pathogens including Salmonella, prevention of these illnesses remains the same, basic sanitation control. We examined data from Salmonella outbreaks linked to fish and fishery products (excluding raw molluscan shellfish) du
