Design and validation of bending test method for characterization of miniature pediatric cortical bone specimens.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder of bone fragility; however, the effects of this disorder on bone material properties are not well understood. No study has yet measured bone material strength in humans with osteogenesis imperfecta. Small bone specimens are often extracted during routine fracture surgeries in children with osteogenesis imperfecta. These specimens could provide valuable insight into the effects of osteogenesis imperfecta on bone material strength; however, their small size poses a challenge to their mechanical characterization. In this study, a validated miniature t

Effect of mechanical reinforcement using nano-clay and acrylic impact modifiers on PMMA denture base: Evaluating single and hybrid additives.

OBJECTIVES: Denture base fractures are a common clinical problem due to the inherent brittleness and low fracture toughness of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This study assessed whether incorporating nanoscale clay particles and acrylic impact modifiers (AIM) could improve the mechanical properties (fracture toughness, flexural strength, elastic modulus) of PMMA denture base resin. METHODS: PMMA specimens were prepared with varying weight percentages of nanoclay and AIM, individually and in combination. Fracture toughness, flexural strength, and elastic modulus were measured using standard m

Mechanical and Antimicrobial Properties of Nanocellulose-Reinforced Heat-Cured Versus the Conventional Heat-Cured Acrylic Resins: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism, the loss of natural teeth, affects mastication, speech, and esthetics. Dentures, usually made of heat-cured acrylic resin, replace function and esthetics. Conventional heat-cured acrylic resin-polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), used for dentures is susceptible to fracture and fungal colonization by Candida, which can cause denture stomatitis. This study was done to investigate reinforcing PMMA with nanocellulose and its effect on the flexural strength, impact strength and antimicrobial properties of PMMA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 90 heat-cured acrylic resin speci

The Effect of Dentin Bonding and Material Thickness on the Flexural Properties of a Lithium-Disilicate Glass-Ceramic.

PURPOSE: Thanks to adhesive techniques and strengthened glass ceramics, ultrathin bonded occlusal veneers have been recently introduced. However, since a universally accepted thickness limit for ultrathin ceramics has yet to be established, their resistance to fracture needs to be better investigated. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of dentin bonding on the flexural properties (ie, fracture load and flexural strength) of a lithium-disilicate (LD) glass ceramic when used in thicknesses equal to or less than the manufacturer's recommendations for occlusal restorati

Optimization of injection molding parameters for bending and tensile strength of ABS and ABS/carbon fiber composites using Taguchi-Grey correlation analysis.

This study investigates the effects of injection molding parameters on the flexural and tensile strengths of neat acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and woven carbon fiber fabric-reinforced ABS composites (ABS/CF) fabricated by a two-step insert injection molding process. A Taguchi L25 orthogonal experimental design was employed with five processing parameters: filling pressure (104-118 MPa), packing pressure (96-100 MPa), filling time (1-3 s), packing time (0.5-2.5 s), and melt temperature (228-232 °C). The results show that flexural strength increased from 5.86-6.49 MPa (ABS) to 5.76-6.93

Influence of Dentin Bonding and Interfacial Adhesion on the Flexural Properties of a 4 Mol% Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia.

PURPOSE: 4 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (4Y-PSZ) offers improved translucency compared to 3% tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia, but it lacks transformation toughening, which may affect its flexural strength. Because adhesive luting was shown to improve mechanical performance of all-ceramic materials, this research evaluated the influence of different cements on the three-point flexural strength of 4Y-PSZ bonded to bovine dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 1-mm-thick dentin slices were obtained from bovine incisors, paired with 1-mm-thick 4Y-PSZ slices, and then divide

Deformation Behavior and Fracture Patterns of Laminated PEEK- and PI-Based Composites with Various Carbon-Fiber Reinforcement.

Laminated composites based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyimide (PI) matrices were fabricated by hot compression. Reinforcing materials (unidirectional carbon-fiber (CF) tapes or carbon fabric) and their layout patterns were varied. Stress-strain diagrams after three-point flexural tests were analyzed, and both lateral faces of the fractured specimens and fractured surfaces (obtained by optical and scanning electron microscopy, respectively) were studied. It was shown that the laminated composites possessed the maximum mechanical properties (flexural elastic modulus and strength) in th

Different polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) reinforcement strategies for long bone osteoplasty procedures: a controlled laboratory comparison using the 4-point bending test.

BACKGROUND: Cementoplasty has been successfully used for treating fractures in various parts of the human body, although the use in weight-bearing long bones is a subject of controversial debate. Strategies to improve the mechanical properties of polymethylmethacrylate-based bone cement (BC) comprise changing the chemical composition or the application of metal reinforcement strategies. In clinical practice reinforced bone cement is used despite biomechanical basic research regarding this topic being scare. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the biomechanical properties o

Influence of Core Configuration on the Flexural Behavior of Lightweight CFRP Sandwich Panels in Drone Design.

Sandwich structures have gained much interest in drone manufacturing structures based on their lightweight design and excellent mechanical characteristics. In this work, a new solution for lightweight drone wing structures consisting of a thin sandwich skin, a main spar, and ribs was proposed. Seven sandwich structures based on prepreg-based CFRP skins and different cores were proposed for the wing drone sandwich skin. Thus, sandwiches with different chemical configurations and densities, such as ROHACELL 51, AIREX T92.100, balsa, AIREX R82.150, AIREX C71.75, NOMEX ECA-I, and Soric XF, were au

Performance of Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Mortar Exposed to Elevated Temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Cement-based materials deteriorate significantly when exposed to high temperatures due to extensive microcracking, increased porosity, and dehydration of hydration products, all of which lower the materials' mechanical performance and post-fire stability. This makes thermally robust mortar essential for protective applications in fire-prone areas as well as structural restoration. METHOD: The goal of this study is to assess how the amount of polypropylene (PP) fiber in cement mortar affects its mechanical behavior, thermal resistance, and residual performance at temperatures as hi

Hybrid-manufactured silicon nitride coated CFR-PEKK: A candidate biomaterial for trauma plate applications?

Continuous carbon fiber-reinforced polyetherketoneketone (CCF-PEKK) is a thermoplastic composite with properties suitable for trauma plate applications (elastic modulus, strength, radiolucency, and inertness). However, components manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) often display non-uniform (anisotropic) mechanical properties and contain microstructural voids. To address these limitations, we investigated a hybrid-manufacturing approach, combining FFF with continuous carbon fiber reinforcement followed by uniaxial compression molding. Here, we asked: 1. Can layup orientation be tu
