Ultraviolet processing for mycotoxin mitigation: A sustainable approach to enhancing food safety and security.

Mycotoxin contamination in cereals, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and seafood has emerged as a significant global concern due to its substantial risks to food safety, public health, economic losses, and food security. The multisystem toxic effects of mycotoxins, including nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and hepatotoxicity, are life-threatening and result in considerable economic losses impacting food security. The toxicity of mycotoxins is influenced by the amount of mycotoxin, duration of exposure, and the subject's physiological state. Humans

Assessment of Drought Tolerance in Wheat genotypes for Sustainable Food Security and Breeding Programs

The crop which is widely consumed and utilized because of its social benefits and economic importance worldwide is wheat. In many parts of the world, it is generally consumed as feed and food for its nutritional benefits, and its productivity is uniform under different environmental effects. In a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replication, an experiment was conducted to assess 50 different wheat cultivars. These cultivars were evaluated under two distinct levels; normal (non-stressed) and drought (stressed) conditions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) under non-stressed (no

Differing Within-Household Food Security Statuses Are Associated with Varied Maternal Mental Health Outcomes.

Household food insecurity is not necessarily equally experienced by all household members, with mothers often changing their intake first when food resources are limited. The purpose of this study was to understand the association between maternal mental health and intrahousehold differences in food security statuses. A cross-sectional survey was administered to Virginia mothers with low income (August-October 2021), assessing validated measures of food security, mental and physical health and related factors. Participants (n = 570) were grouped according to the food security status of adults

Climate, conflict, and food security: a systematic review of household-level evidence (2020-2025).

Climate and conflict crises increasingly occur together, creating compounded risks for household food security. This review synthesizes evidence from 37 quantitative studies published 2020-2025 on how climate crises (such as drought, storms, or floods), violent conflict (such as war and institutional fragility), and their interactions affect household food security. Most studies examine either climate crises (51%) or conflict crises (38%), while only 11% analyze combined crises. Evidence is geographically concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa (65%) and relies largely on cross-sectional surveys (6

Decoding heavy metal tolerance in rice: Nucleic acid-based technologies shaping global food security.

Global rice production is critically threatened by heavy metal contamination, particularly cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), which compromises yield, diminishes grain nutritional quality, and exposes billions of consumers to nephrotoxic and carcinogenic risks. Conventional remediation strategies (soil amendments, water management, phytoremediation) are prohibitively expensive, temporally protracted, and fundamentally reactive, while conventional breeding is constrained by linkage drag, polygenic trait architecture, and absence of natural alleles that restrict toxic metal uptake from essential min

From soil to health: advancing regenerative agriculture for improved food quality and nutrition security.

Industrial agriculture practices including herbicide-pesticide usage, synthetic fertilizer application, large-scale monocropping, and tillage contribute to increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), exacerbating the effects of global climate change, damaging vital water resources via nutrient pollution and soil erosion, and significantly reducing biodiversity across ecosystems. Observed decadal declines in diet quality driven by industrial farming practices have led to a global health epidemic marked by increased micronutrient deficiency and malnutrition. Additionally, glob

Negative impact of chronic pandemic-specific financial stress on food security among college students.

Since the pandemic started, food insecurity has become a more serious issue for U.S. college students. The study goals were to evaluate whether pandemic-specific stress contributes to current food insecurity (as of February-March of 2022) and to determine which student characteristics are associated with food insecurity. We used the 2022 Spring American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment data (n = 620) collected at a public university. We estimated two multiple logistic regression models. The odds of having very low food security (OR = 8.65, 95% CI = 4.84:15.43) and

Climate change poses a threat to nutrition and food security in Kilifi County, Kenya.

Over the last decades, increased emission of greenhouse gases has led to hot weather extremes, heavy precipitation and worsening of agricultural and ecological droughts. Although Africa's contribution to climate change is minimal, the continent is especially vulnerable to its effects. This report aims to describe the effect of climate change leading to drought in Kilifi County, Kenya, and the communities' experiences of this effect on food availability. During their community rotation, residents from a university in Nairobi, Kenya, evaluated changes in weather patterns and nutrition indicators

[Lack of food and nutritional security in Central America: contributing factors and social exclusion].

In August 2001, the XVII Meeting of the Health Sector in Central America and the Dominican Republic (RESSCAD) was held in Managua, Nicaragua. At the meeting, a resolution was adopted in support of strengthening and furthering the Central American initiative for the Promotion of Food and Nutritional Security. This paper examines the conceptual framework behind the initiative, which was approved by the XIV Central American Presidents Summit Meeting (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and launched in 1994 at the regional, national, and municipal levels (Guacimo, Costa Rica, 1994). It focuses on the accom

Queering food security research: A critical analysis of 2SLGBTQ+ People's experiences of food insecurity in Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI), stress, isolation, and discrimination are major determinants of health that disproportionately affect 2SLGBTQ + people. The COVID-19 pandemic potentially exacerbated these inequities. This study investigates HFI rates among 2SLGBTQ + adults living in diverse household conditions during the pandemic and explores the idea that heteronormative conceptions of the "household" may affect measurement of HFI. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey responses were collected from 437 self-identified 2SLGBTQ + people from Toronto, Canada between March and July 2021

The impact of COVID-19 on the sustainability of the environment, animal health and food security, and safety.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

COVID-19 pandemic influenced the environment, animal health, and food security. Due to reduced human mobility, the air and water quality increased. Other environmental consequences were the personal protective types of equipment and their haphazard disposal. Atmospheric pollution could be a cofactor leading to an increased COVID-19 mortality rate. Lockdown, however, caused a reduction in air and water pollution. Noise pollution affects the health of individuals and communities in terms of cardiovascular disorders and sleeping problems. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 lockdown controls human activities
