Knowledge of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination act among individuals affected by Huntington disease.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 was the first US legislation to address genetic discrimination. We sought to assess understanding of GINA among individuals affected by the autosomal dominant condition, Huntington disease (HD). We conducted a cross-sectional survey of individuals with varying risk of HD to assess their familiarity with GINA. As a control, individuals were surveyed about their familiarity with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Those who reported familiarity with GINA were asked about their knowledge of specific provisio

Estimating genetic correlation jointly using individual-level and summary-level GWAS data.

With increasing access to individual-level data from genome-wide association studies, it is now common for researchers to have individual-level data of some traits, whereas for other traits only publicly released summary statistics are available due to privacy and safety concerns. Current genetic-correlation methods require both traits to be in the same format. When one trait has individual-level data and the other has only summary statistics, researchers often convert individual-level data to summary statistics and then apply summary-based methods, which is inefficient and can lose informatio

Cultural enhancement of a clinical service to meet the needs of indigenous people; genetic service development in response to issues for New Zealand Maori.

The delivery of good health care services within clinical settings is predicated by an understanding of the needs of the stakeholders. Most of the information generated to date on the transfer of mutational analysis to clinical service has been within a Eurocentric model favouring individual autonomy. It is predictable that this model does not easily translate for other cultures. Current genetic technology has elucidated the molecular basis of many diseases. In familial cancer and other late-onset disorders, there is now the possibility of 'prediction' where a high risk conferred by family his

Vaccine hesitancy and attitudes toward newborn heel-prick screening among religious officials: A mixed-methods study, Erzurum, Türkiye.

Vaccine hesitancy has risen globally and in Türkiye. Religious officials often act as community opinion leaders; their views may shape acceptance of vaccination and newborn bloodspot screening (NBS). We conducted a cross-sectional study among Muslim religious officials in Erzurum, Türkiye (n = 200). A 47-item questionnaire captured sociodemographics, health-service use/satisfaction, attitudes to childhood/adult vaccines and newborn bloodspot screening, and the 21-item Turkish Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (higher scores = higher hesitancy). Open-ended item elicited qualitative comments. Quantitative

FedGA: Genetic Algorithm-Guided Federated Learning for Medical Image Segmentation with Non-IID Features.

Federated learning (FL) enhances data privacy and compliance with data regulations by enabling multiple decentralized parties to collaboratively train machine learning models without sharing their data. This makes it an ideal paradigm for the healthcare domain. Despite its inherent privacy-by-design, FL faces performance and convergence challenges when dealing with non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data. Although previous studies have primarily addressed the challenges of skewed label distribution across clients, which are more effective for classification, we focus in this

Is there a duty to share genetic information?

A number of prominent bioethicists, such as Parker, Lucassen and Knoppers, have called for the adoption of a system in which by default genetic information is shared among family members. This paper suggests that a main reason given in support of this call to share genetic information among family members is the idea that genetic information is essentially familial in nature. On examining this "familial nature of genetics" argument, the paper shows that most genetic information is only shared in a weaker way among family members and does not necessarily lead to the actual manifestation of part

Genetic Variation in Cardiomyopathy and Cardiovascular Disorders.

With the wider deployment of massively-parallel, next-generation sequencing, it is now possible to survey human genome data for research and clinical purposes. The reduced cost of producing short-read sequencing has now shifted the burden to data analysis. Analysis of genome sequencing remains challenged by the complexity of the human genome, including redundancy and the repetitive nature of genome elements and the large amount of variation in individual genomes. Public databases of human genome sequences greatly facilitate interpretation of common and rare genetic variation, although linking

Genetic screening: marvel or menace?

Genetic screening is a systematic search in the population for persons of certain genotypes. The usual purpose is to detect persons who themselves or whose offspring are at risk for genetic diseases or genetically determined susceptibilities to environmental agents. Is genetic screening a marvel about to free us from the scourge of genetic disease or a menace about to invade our privacy and determine who may reproduce? There are three different types of genetic screening. Newborn screening identifies serious genetic disease at birth, permitting prompt treatment to prevent mental and physical r

Genetic screening techniques and diseases for neonatal genetic diseases.

Neonatal genetic disease is currently screened mainly based on metabolite biochemical technology. The false positive rate of biochemical screening technology is relatively high, and there are certain false negatives, and only few types of diseases can be screened. The genetic techniques have been gradually used for neonatal genetic disease screening in recent years. Gene detection technology includes quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing. High-throughput sequencing includes gene panel sequencing, whole-exome sequencing and whole-genome sequencing. At present, qPCR and gene pan

[Importance of genetics for health inequalities].

In Germany it has rarely been assessed in a systematic way, if and how genetic disposition and genetic testing are linked to health inequality. The paper aims to be a contribution towards closing this gap. In a first step, it is pointed out that the discussion about potential links between genetic causes of social inequalities has concentrated on issues such as body height and intelligence. It is stressed that, of course, social status is mainly determined socially and not genetically. In the second step, medical benefits of genetic testing are discussed. It can be assumed that low status grou

Personal Genetic Information about HIV: Research Participants' Views of Ethical, Social, and Behavioral Implications.

BACKGROUND: Personal genetic information (PGI) about HIV is produced in research and entering the clinic and direct-to-consumer market, but little consideration has been given to ethical and social issues, public perspectives, and potential behavioral implications. OBJECTIVES: This research queried the views of research participants at risk for or infected with HIV, exploring their perspectives on HIV-related PGI and its ethical, social, and behavioral implications. METHODS: We used focus groups to collect rich information about participants' perspectives on the ethical, social, and behavior

Strengthening legal safeguards against genetic discrimination: review and recommendations for Malaysia.

The increased pace of genomic research and precision medicine on a global scale has heightened the risk of genetic discrimination and underscored the critical importance of genetic data protection. Leading jurisdictions, including the U.S., the European Union, Japan, China and Hong Kong among others, have enacted laws as solution to these issues. These regulations explicitly outlaw the misuse of genetic information in insurance, employment, or health-related domains in addition to robust data protection measures, which include defined opt-in requirements and proper governance by auditors and e

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing for addiction susceptibility: a premature commercialisation of doubtful validity and value.

Genetic research on addiction liability and pharmacogenetic research on treatments for addiction have identified some genetic variants associated with disease risk and treatment. Genetic testing for addiction liability and treatment response has not been used widely in clinical practice because most of the genes identified only modestly predict addiction risk or treatment response. However, many of these genetic tests have been commercialized prematurely and are available direct to the consumer (DTC). The easy availability of DTC tests for addiction liability and lack of regulation over their

Privacy-Preserving Hybrid GA-LSTM Ensemble for Typhoid Detection Using Optimised Clinical Feature Selection.

Background/Objectives: Typhoid fever remains a major public health challenge in many low-income countries, where overlapping clinical symptoms and the limited reliability of conventional diagnostic procedures hinder accurate diagnosis. This study aims to develop a reliable and efficient diagnostic framework that automates typhoid fever detection from clinical data while preserving patient privacy. Methods: To achieve this objective, we propose a hybrid framework combining genetic algorithm (GA)-based feature selection, a Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) deep learn

Community Genetics screening in a pandemic: solutions for pre-test education, informed consent, and specimen collection.

A Community Genetics carrier screening program for the Jewish community has operated on-site in high schools in Sydney (Australia) for 25 years. During 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, government-mandated social-distancing, 'lock-down' public health orders, and laboratory supply-chain shortages prevented the usual operation and delivery of the annual testing program. We describe development of three responses to overcome these challenges: (1) pivoting to online education sufficient to ensure informed consent for both genetic and genomic testing; (2) development of contactless telehe

Developing a questionnaire to explore lay people's preferences for communicating hereditary conditions within families: insights from a cognitive interview study.

Cognitive interviews are a valuable qualitative method for developing and refining survey instruments, particularly on complex topics such as genetic health. They help address misunderstandings between intended meanings and respondent interpretations, enhancing data validity and ensuring comprehensibility. This study aimed to refine a questionnaire exploring the attitudes and preferences of the Italian general population regarding the communication of potential hereditary conditions within families. Through iterative testing, issues related to questionnaire instructions, question wording, and

Ethical and regulatory requirements for conducting researcher-driven large-scale multinational genetic haematological studies: the INHERENT experience.

BACKGROUND: The International Hemoglobinopathy Research Network (INHERENT) focuses on studying genetic modifiers through large, multi-ethnic genome-wide association studies involving paediatric and adult patients with haemoglobinopathies. The growing integration of genetics and genomics into global healthcare has highlighted the need for standardized policies on biospecimen and data handling. This study describes the necessary ethical and regulatory framework for conducting multinational, researcher-driven genetic studies on humans. METHODS: Key areas related to the INHERENT study were identi

Development of a culturally targeted chatbot to inform living kidney donor candidates of African ancestry about APOL1 genetic testing: a mixed methods study.

Clinical chatbots are increasingly used to help integrate genetic testing into clinical contexts, but no chatbot exists for Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) genetic testing of living kidney donor (LKD) candidates of African ancestry. Our study aimed to culturally adapt and assess perceptions of the Gia® chatbot to help integrate APOL1 testing into LKD evaluation. Ten focus groups and post-focus group surveys were conducted with 54 LKDs, community members, and kidney transplant recipients of African ancestry. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. Key themes about mak

Current practice of artificial insemination by donor in the United States.

Of 711 physicians likely to perform artificial insemination by donor surveyed to determine their current practices, 471 responded, of whom 379 reported that they performed this procedure. They accounted for approximately 3576 births by this means in 1977. In addition to treating infertility, 26 per cent of these physicians used the procedure to prevent transmission of a genetic disease, and 10 per cent used if for single women. Donors of semen were primarily from universities, were only superficially screened for genetic diseases, and were then matched phenotypically to the recipient's husband

The impact of disclosure on donor gamete participants: donors, intended parents and offspring.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review examines recent publications that provide insight into how the trend toward nonanonymity and disclosure in gamete donation impacts donors, intended parents, and their donor-conceived children. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings show an increase in donor programs that offer open-identity between donors and offspring. The psychological needs of gamete donors and their attitudes toward disclosure are increasingly given consideration. Qualitative research on how parents of donor gamete offspring make decisions about disclosure reveals that even when couples ini
