Genomic findings of hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy characterized in a Thai clinical genetics service.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are the most common referrals in the Inherited Cardiovascular Condition (ICC) Genetics Service. Several issues must be discussed with patients and their families during the genetic consultation session, including the options for genetic testing and cardiovascular surveillance in family members. We developed an ICC registry and performed next-generation-based DNA sequencing for all patients affected by non-syndromic HCM and idiopathic DCM in our joint specialist genetics service. The target gene sequencing panel relied on the Hu

Opportunities and barriers for genetic service delivery in Kenya from a health personnel perspective.

Genetic counselling and testing are essential health services for the management of heritable diseases. However, in low-and-middle income countries like Kenya, genetic counsellors are not yet a licenced profession, and there is limited availability of and access to genetic testing. This study aimed to uncover opportunities and barriers for genetic service delivery in the Kenyan healthcare system from the perspectives of those who provide genetic testing and/or genetic counselling. Participants included Kenyan health personnel who deliver genetic services. This was a qualitative study that coll

Use of Cancer Genetics Services in African-American Young Breast Cancer Survivors.

INTRODUCTION: African-American women have higher rates of early-onset breast cancer compared with their Caucasian counterparts; yet, when diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, they underuse genetic counseling and testing to manage their risk of developing future cancers. METHODS: Self-reported baseline data were collected between September 2012 and January 2013 and analyzed in 2014 from a subpopulation of 340 African-American young breast cancer survivors (YBCSs) enrolled in an RCT. YBCSs were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ between ages 20 and 45 year

Cancer genetics service interest in women with a limited family history of breast cancer.

Women with a limited family history of breast cancer may be interested in cancer genetics information although their objective risk of breast cancer may not indicate routine referral to cancer genetics services. This study examined factors related to interest and use of cancer genetics services in a community sample of women with a limited family history of breast cancer (N = 187) who had no previous contact with cancer genetics services. Participants provided demographic information and ratings of perceived risk, cancer distress, attitudes, and intentions to initiate cancer genetics services.

Disability Experiences and Perspectives Regarding Reproductive Decisions, Parenting, and the Utility of Genetic Services: a Qualitative Study.

Genetic counselors adopt seemingly contradictory roles: advocating for individuals with genetic conditions while offering prenatal diagnosis and the option of selective termination to prevent the birth of a child with a disability. This duality contributes to the tension between the disability and clinical genetics communities. Varying opinions exist amongst the disability community: some value genetic services while others are opposed. However, there is limited research exploring the opinions of individuals with a disability regarding issues related to reproduction and genetic services in the

Medicine, market and communication: ethical considerations in regard to persuasive communication in direct-to-consumer genetic testing services.

BACKGROUND: Commercial genetic testing offered over the internet, known as direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC GT), currently is under ethical attack. A common critique aims at the limited validation of the tests as well as the risk of psycho-social stress or adaption of incorrect behavior by users triggered by misleading health information. Here, we examine in detail the specific role of advertising communication of DTC GT companies from a medical ethical perspective. Our argumentative analysis departs from the starting point that DTC GT operates at the intersection of two different conte

Identity development and adaptation in adolescents with genetic conditions: a qualitatively oriented mixed-methods study to develop strategies for optimizing clinical genetics services.

BACKGROUND: Genetic counselling for adolescents necessitates an approach distinct from that used with adults. Developing best practices is crucial, considering the growing number of disabled adolescents worldwide and increasing use of genomic testing early in life. We investigated perceptions of adolescents (10-19 years) who had been diagnosed with a genetic disorder in terms of how they describe receiving, understanding, and living with a genetic condition. We undertook a cross-sectional, qualitatively oriented mixed methods study underpinned by the pragmatic paradigm. Adolescents completed t

The attitude of Japanese physicians regarding genetic service for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

A questionnaire carried out among Japanese physicians revealed that a strong demand for genetic counseling among patients and families with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In contrast, the awareness of physicians regarding genetic counseling for the disease seemed to be low. For example, 66.0% of the respondents to the questionnaire revealed a negative attitude to providing genetic counseling for patients, and 30.7% of the respondents did not know that most types of polycystic kidney disease are inherited disorders. With the advance of scientific research, the demand for
