Generalised leukaemic gingival enlargement: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloblastic leukaemia is a malignant bone marrow neoplasm of myeloid precursors of white blood cells. Due to its high morbidity rate, early diagnosis and appropriate medical therapy is essential. METHODS: The article highlights normal blood alterations like anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis and advanced diagnostic aids like flow cytometry, special staining as a diagnostic modality as well as for prognostic information in acute leukaemia, particularly as a tool for assigning lineage and facilitating further pathologic classification which may be helpful in influencing

Conflation of gingival overgrowth and schwannoma.

The authors describe a seminal case report of a 10-year-old boy with enlarged gingivae in relation to his maxillary anterior teeth. The lesion, provisionally diagnosed as idiopathic gingival enlargement, was completely excised and divided into two sections. The histological and immunohistochemical findings in one of the sections showed it to be characteristic of schwannoma while the other section showed indications of idiopathic gingival enlargement. The patient has been followed up carefully and no recurrence has been noted.

Focus of epithelial dysplasia arising in hereditary gingival fibromatosis.

The gingiva of a 32-year-old black male was biopsied for evidence of vasculitis, but instead an area of epithelial dysplasia was found. Further investigation revealed that the patient and several members of his family had hereditary gingival fibromatosis. Treatment included four quadrants of gingivectomy plus inverse bevel incisions for trimming those areas which were too thick for simple gingivectomy. Histopathologic examination of the excised tissues supported the diagnosis of gingival fibromatosis, but no other areas of epithelial dysplasia were seen. To our knowledge, this is the only repo

Anatomy and Spread of Gingivobuccal Cancers.

Gingivobuccal cancers affect anatomically distinct yet confluent areas each varying in its ability to resist oncologic spread. Barriers such as periosteum and bone provide greater degree of resistance when compared to buccinator and buccal fat. Involvement of dentition and presence of potential spaces along the mandible and maxilla provide avenues of spread that may result in extensive defects with substantial functional sequalae following tumor extirpation. Owing to the complex 3-dimensional anatomy with varying tissue types preoperative imaging is of utmost importance in surgical planning to

[Pigmentation and pigmented lesions of the gingival mucosa].

The pigmentation is the physiological or pathological accumulation of a pigment in a tissue. Physiological pigmentation in gingiva which is a part of masticatory mucous membranes depends on the activity of the melanocytes. These non keratinocytic cells include the melanosoma where an endogenous pigment, the melanin, is synthesized. Quantitative or qualitative disruption of mucous pigmentation leads to the apparition of pigmented lesions. When melanocytes are directly concerned, the lesions can be of intrinsic origin, such as oral mucosa melanoma, the nevus, pigmented oral lichen planus etc. Pi

Oral manifestation and gingival biopsy contributing to the early diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis in a paediatric patient.

INTRODUCTION: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid dendritic cell neoplasm causing inflammation and tissue destruction. Clinical features vary from single bone involvement to a multi-system, life-threatening disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old presented with bilateral osteolytic lesions, advanced alveolar and basal bone loss, widened inferior alveolar canal, and displacement of tooth buds. Clinical findings revealed the presence of multiple ulcerative lesions on the gingival region of the mandibular posterior teeth, the palatal region of the maxillary posterior teeth, and the

Peripheral dentinogenic ghost cell tumor of the gingiva.

BACKGROUND: A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor is a locally invasive neoplasm that is characterized by ameloblastoma-like islands of epithelial cells in a mature connective tissue stroma. METHODS: A 43-year-old male patient presented a well-circumscribed sessile, exophytic mass of the gingiva with a diameter of 2 cm located in the canine area of the right maxilla. The lesion was enucleated. RESULTS: The lesion showed odontogenic epithelium, ghost cells, dentinoid material, and giant cells. The final microscopic diagnosis was a dentinogenic ghost cell tumor. CONCLUSIONS: A dentinogenic ghost ce

Peripheral ossifying fibroma and pyogenic granuloma. Are they interrelated?

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) and pyogenic granuloma (PG) belong to the group of "focal reactive overgrowths," having different histomorphologic representations. The pathogenesis of POF remains controversial. It has been observed that POF in some cases may initially develop as a PG that undergoes subsequent fibrous maturation and calcification. A case of focal reactive gingival overgrowth with a recurrence is presented. Clinical, radiological and histological examinations were performed and included a detailed history of the lesions to come up with the proper diagnosis. The primary lesion

Mucocutaneous Manifestations of Leukemias and Lymphomas: A Clinical Study from a Tertiary Care Center in North India.

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous manifestations are common in hematological malignancies, but are generally misinterpreted. About two-thirds of the patients with hematological malignancies have mucocutaneous manifestations. Specific manifestations include leukemia cutis, leukemic vasculitis, and mucosal hyperplasia. Non-specific manifestations include reactive dermatoses, infective dermatoses, and miscellaneous manifestations. Mucocutaneous manifestations help in depicting the course and prognosis of hematological malignancies. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency and pattern of mucocutane

Interrelationship between pyogenic granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case report.

Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) is an inflammatory hyperplasia which is non-neoplastic in nature. Because of the high incidence of oral PG, critical need exists for its proper diagnosis and treatment. Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) is a focal reactive overgrowth occurring in young adults. Though clinically similar to PG, it is important to differentiate the lesions based on the histopathological findings that facilitate the management of the lesion, which is diverse in nature when compared to PG. Proper treatment of such overgrowths and appropriate oral hygiene instructions shall ensure no recurre

Primary gingival pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia with periodontal findings: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: This paper is the first-ever report, to our knowledge, of a case of generalized primary gingival pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia(PEH) with significant periodontal findings in a 23-year-old Indian female patient. It explains the need to differentiate PEH from squamous cell carcinoma in diagnosis and treatment planning. The present article also reviews current immunohistologic staining methods used to differentiate PEH from squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: A two-stage surgical approach was used to eliminate the lesion by gingivectomy and gingivoplasty under local anesthesia. Hist

Peripheral ossifying fibroma in the maxillary arch.

Many types of localized reactive lesions may occur on the gingiva, including focal fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma. Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a gingival growth, usually arising from interdental papilla and represents up to 2% of all lesions that are biopsied. Other terms used to describe this lesion include peripheral cementifying fibroma, peripheral fibroma with cementogenesis, peripheral fibroma with osteogenesis, peripheral fibroma with calcification, calcified or ossified fibrous epulis and calcified fibroblast

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the Gingiva: A rare case report and clinical management.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the gingiva is an exceptionally rare plasma cell neoplasm, posing significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and low incidence. This case report details a 67-year-old male presenting with a painless right maxillary gingival mass, initially mimicking benign hyperplasia. Diagnostic workup, including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), revealed osteolytic bone destruction and soft tissue expansion. Histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses confirmed monoclonal plasma cell proliferation (CD38+, CD79a+, MUM-1+
