The Myth of Tithonus: Ageing and Dementia in Ancient Greek Thought.

In Greek mythology, Tithonus was the husband of Eos, the goddess of dawn. Granted immortality without the gift of eternal youth, Tithonus became an illustration of senescence without physical or cognitive wellbeing, characterised by not only physical but also cognitive decline - this is one of the earliest literary representations of dementia in Western civilisation. As myths mirror the values and concerns of a society, the depictions of Tithonus across the eras are an interesting window into how the Ancient Greek society dealt with the process of ageing and cognitive decline. Upper extremity injuries in Homer's Iliad.

Homer's Iliad remains a fascinating source of medical history. This epic poem, compiled around 800 BCE, describes several weeks of the last year of the 10-year siege of Troy (Ilion) by the Achaeans. Homer composed the epic by combining and formalizing oral poems, legends, customs, and experiences that originated in the later Mycenaean age (1600-1100 bce). The story centers on the rage of the great warrior Achilles. The Iliad remains the oldest record of Greek medicine and a unique source of surgical history. This study examines the upper extremity injuries described in the Iliad and compares t

The death of Alexander the Great: malaria or typhoid fever?

Alexander the Great had a profound effect on world history. His conquests covered the entire known world at the time, and he was responsible for the spread of Greek culture throughout the ancient world. In Babylon in 323 BC, Alexander died when he was nearly 33 years old. Possible explanations for his death have included alcoholic liver disease and strychnine poisoning, but little data support either condition as the cause of his death. Alexander most likely died from malaria or typhoid fever, which were rampant in ancient Babylon. The description of his final illness from the royal diaries is

First report on autochthonous urease-positive Trichophyton rubrum (T. raubitschekii) from South-east Europe.

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton raubitschekii is a dermatophyte belonging to the T. rubrum complex and is differentiated principally by its positive urease activity and production of profuse macroconidia and microconidia in culture. It is classically isolated from African, South-east Asian and Australian aboriginal patients with tinea corporis or tinea cruris. OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to screen Greek and Bulgarian clinical isolates identified as T. rubrum for T. raubitschekii and to delineate these strains by two molecular methods used for the first time in T. rubrum epidemiological stu

Severe hypovitaminosis D in pregnant refugees arriving in Europe: neonatal outcomes and importance of prenatal intervention.

Adequate vitamin D levels are particularly important in pregnant women for both maternal and neonatal health. Prior studies have shown a significantly high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) among refugees. However, no study has addressed the prevalence of VDD in pregnant refugees and its effects on neonatal health. In this study, we examined the prevalence of VDD in refugee pregnant women living in Greece and compared our results with Greek pregnant inhabitants. VDD was frequent in both groups but was significantly more common in refugees (92.2 vs 67.3% of Greek women, P = 0.003) with 7

Human parvovirus B19: immunity of Greek females and prenatal investigation of hydrops fetalis.

Sera from 308 healthy Greek females of reproductive age were examined for specific IgG antibodies to human parvovirus B19 by recombinant-Elisa to determine the immunity rates of this part of population to parvovirus B19. Also paired maternal sera and amniotic fluids from nine pregnancies with hydrops fetalis were investigated for specific IgG and IgM antibodies and parvovirus DNA by polymerase chain reaction and southern hybridization analysis. The latter study was conducted to find out the participation of parvovirus B19 infection in hydrops fetalis cases in Greece. The overall prevalence of

A Model-Based Public-Payer Investment Appraisal of a National Home Hemodialysis Program in Greece: A Net Present Value Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In-center hemodialysis is the dominant kidney replacement therapy modality in Greece and generates substantial recurring expenditure for the public payer. Home hemodialysis is not currently implemented at national scale, but it may reduce long-term public expenditure if early investment in training capacity, equipment and home support is recovered over time. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, from the Greek public-payer perspective, the discounted budget impact and net present value (NPV) of implementing a national home hemodialysis program for 300 patients. METHODS: We developed a determin

Efficacy of intravenous infliximab in axial spondyloarthritis: impact on disease activity, quality of life, and productivity in subgroups with psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) leads to significant impairments in quality of life (QoL) and work productivity. While infliximab is effective in treating axSpA, its impact in patients with concomitant extra-skeletal manifestations is limited, particularly in the Greek population. AIMS: To evaluate intravenous infliximab's impact on disease activity, QoL, and work productivity in Greek patients with axSpA, and to compare treatment effects in subgroups with and without concomitant psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with axSpA participated in a

Historical perspective milestones in the evolution of lumbar spinal postural health in seating.

The best knowledge on seated posture before the Enlightenment was not scientific, but influenced by sociocultural, economic, and manufacturing factors. Although the pursuit of knowledge related to spinal postural health was advanced with the advent of empirico-analytic research, academic opinion continued to be influenced by unsubstantiated information, often resulting in incorrect advice to the public. Only in the past decade has advice on "correct" seated posture, spanning the time from the Hippocratic texts to the present, been brought into question by evidence-based research. By exploring

Development of animal use in experiments: a brief historical overview.

The use of animals as a model for humans has a long history. This paper describes in a bird's eye view the main developments from the ancient period until recent times. Although animal models have been used since the early Greek and Roman civilizations, the main increase in their use dates from the end of the Second World War. Not only did the number of animals used in experiments increase dramatically in this period, but also the variety of species, as well as the purposes for which animals were used. However, from the 1970s onwards, the number of animal experiments has decreased. The reasons

Serological Evidence of Pandemic H1N1 Influenza Virus Infections in Greek Swine.

The introduction of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza virus in pigs changed the epidemiology of influenza A viruses (IAVs) in swine in Europe and the rest of the world. Previously, three IAV subtypes were found in the European pig population: an avian-like H1N1 and two reassortant H1N2 and H3N2 viruses with human-origin haemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase proteins and internal genes of avian decent. These viruses pose antigenically distinct HAs, which allow the retrospective diagnosis of infection in serological investigations. However, cross-reactions between the HA of pH1N1 and the

Oral surgery during Byzantine times.

The Byzantine World covers the eleven-century period between 323-1453 AD and was characterized by a comprehensive system of medicine based on the fundamental principles of Ancient Greek medicine. Several clinical entities, such as epulis, parulis, constrictions of the tongue (short frenum), sublingual ranula, jaws fractures and disclocations, oral fistulae were well-known and treated during the Byzantine period with primarily surgical, but also non-surgical, interventions. Tooth extractions and operations on the uvula were also popular. The variety of these operations, for which special dental

Homosexuality according to ancient Greek physicians.

Homosexuality and pedophilia in ancient Greece greatly concerned many researchers who were mainly interested in highlighting the social aspect of this phenomenon in ancient Greek society. An important source on the subject was the paintings of a man and his lover in attic black and red figured pottery, up to the end of the 5th century BC. Another main source was the information that derived from the texts of ancient Greek literature, especially poetry. Homosexuality was not only referring to relationships between males, but it was also manifested in lesbian love. It is believed that in the Hom

The site of the optical image in the eye.

Based on good empirical evidence it is generally said that the layer of the retina containing the rod and cone cells is the site where the optical image of the external world falls, and whence the neural signal is transmitted to the brain. The historical path to this idea is traced from the ancient Greeks, through Kepler to modern times. The newer hypothesis suggests that the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) layer behind the rods and cones may be the actual photoreceptive apparatus. It is supported by clinical pictures, such as retinal detachment and Vitamin A deficiency, and the physical law

The physician B. Adamantiades and his contribution to the disease Adamantiades-Behçet.

Adamantiades-Behçet disease is a multifocal entity which was first described by Hippocrates 500 years BC. The disease is characterised by relapsing oral aphthae, genital ulcers and iritis, while 24-40% of cases present with arterial or venous thromboses, arterial aneurysms or varices. In rare cases, due to invasion of different systems, the clinical picture varies, making timely diagnosis difficult. The disease is common all over the world but is more frequent in Japan, Korea, China and the Middle East. The first description in contemporary times was made by the Greek ophthalmologist Benedict

The links between the medical school of Bologna and the Hellenic medical world.

A significant number of outstanding Greek physicians had had their studies or post graduation courses at the University of Bologna during the period of the 17th-19th century. As a brief outline, six (6) eminent figures should be mentioned: 1. Alexander Mavrocordatos (1641-1709), the outstanding politician and diplomat of his time; 2. John Baptist Charvouris (1722-1804), Professor of the University of Turin and Padova; 3. Marcos Charvouris (1731-1808), Professor of Chemistry at the University of Padova; 4. Lacosamide as a first-line treatment option in focal epilepsy: a cost-utility analysis for the Greek healthcare system.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological disorder worldwide. Approximately 40% of patients with focal epileptic seizures remain uncontrolled with antiepileptic drug (AED) monotherapy or polytherapy. Lacosamide has been recently approved by the European Medicines Agency as monotherapy for the treatment of focal seizures. The aim of this study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of lacosamide compared with zonisamide as first-line treatment of focal epilepsy in patients with epilepsy aged ≥ 16 years to inform clinical decision-making in Greece. METHODS: A discret

[Viruses and civilization].

A few million years ago, when primates moved from the east African forest to the savannah, they were already infected with endogenous viruses and occultly transmitted them to the prime Homo species. However it was much later with the building of the first large cities in Mesopotamia that interhuman viral transmission began in earnest. Spreading was further enhanced with the organization of the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Arab empires around the Mediterranean. Discovery of the New World in 1492 led to an unprecedented clash of civilizations and the destruction of pre-Columbian Indian civilizati
