Genital carriage of the genus Haemophilus in pregnancy: species distribution and antibiotic susceptibility.

Recent reports have hypothesized that colonization of the maternal genital tract with non-capsulated Haemophilus influenzae could result in neonatal invasive disease. In this study, genital carriage of the genus Haemophilus was investigated in 510 pregnant women attending an Italian hospital for routine controls. Overall, vaginal carriage of the genus Haemophilus was 9.0 % (46/510). A high colonization rate with Haemophilus parainfluenzae (37/510, 7.3 %) was found; other species, such as Haemophilus pittmaniae (7/510, 1.4 %) and Haemophilus haemolyticus (2/510, 0.4 %), were detected for the fi

A human oral commensal-mediated protection against Sjögren's syndrome with maintenance of T cell immune homeostasis and improved oral microbiota.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a prevalent systemic autoimmune disease with substantial impacts on women's health worldwide. Although oral Haemophilus parainfluenzae is reduced in SS, its significance remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the pathophysiological role of H. parainfluenzae in SS. Reduced salivary H. parainfluenzae levels in SS patients were confirmed through quantitative PCR. Oral H. parainfluenzae inoculation in NOD mice alleviated focal sialadenitis, improved salivary function, and reduced IFN-γ+CD3+ and IFN-γ+CD8+ T cells in salivary gland-draining lymph nodes, maintainin

Isolation and Epidemiology of Respiratory Bacteria From Unusual Sites: Demographic, Seasonal, and Geographic Distribution in a Laboratory-Based Study From a Tertiary Care Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.

Introduction Respiratory pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Haemophilus parainfluenzae primarily infect respiratory and oropharyngeal sites. However, they are increasingly being isolated from unusual anatomic sites, such as urogenital and abdominal sources. These atypical occurrences necessitate an understanding of their epidemiology and clinical implications. Methods This study aimed to evaluate the seasonal prevalence, gender distribution, and clinical characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Haemophilus parainfluenzae isol

Distinct trajectory of gut microbiota driven by a human oral commensal: insights from a murine study.

BACKGROUND: Oral microbes modulate the gut microbiota. Haemophilus parainfluenzae, a core human oral commensal with immunomodulatory properties, is reduced in autoimmune diseases, while mitigating Sjögren's syndrome-like disease with improved oral microbiota in female NOD mice. However, whether it modulates the gut microbiota remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To study the modulatory effect of oral H. parainfluenzae inoculation on the gut microbiota. DESIGN: Female NOD mice were orally inoculated with H. parainfluenzae following antibiotic treatment. Fecal samples were collected pre- and post-inocu

Acromioclavicular septic arthritis: a case report of a novel pathogen.

In immunocompetent patients, septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a rare entity. It can be difficult to discern from glenohumeral septic arthritis and AC joint impingement syndrome. The usual symptoms are fever, erythema, swelling, palpable pain over the AC joint, and pain with shoulder motion. The most commonly reported causative organism is a Staphylococcus or Streptococcus species. Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a rare cause of septic arthritis in any joint. Although limited to case reports in the literature, most H parainfluenzae skeletal infections occur after surgical i

Salivary dysbiosis in Sjögren's syndrome and a commensal-mediated immunomodulatory effect of salivary gland epithelial cells.

Salivary gland epithelial cells (SGECs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome due to aberrant antigen-presentation function. This study examined the hypothesis that oral dysbiosis modulates the antigen-presentation function of SGECs, which regulates CD4 T cell proliferation in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Saliva samples from 8 pSS patients and 16 healthy subjects were analyzed for bacterial 16S ribosomal DNA. As a result, 39 differentially abundant taxa were identified. Among them, the phylum Proteobacteria comprised 21 taxa, and this phylum was mostly enriched in

Genetic Adaptation and Acquisition of Macrolide Resistance in Haemophilus spp. during Persistent Respiratory Tract Colonization in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Patients Receiving Long-Term Azithromycin Treatment.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) benefit from the immunomodulatory effect of azithromycin, but long-term administration may alter colonizing bacteria. Our goal was to identify changes in Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae during azithromycin treatment. Fifteen patients were followed while receiving prolonged azithromycin treatment (Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, Spain). Four patients (P02, P08, P11, and P13) were persistently colonized by H. influenzae for at least 3 months and two (P04 and P11) by H. parainfluenzae. Isolates from these patient

HACEK endocarditis in infants and children: two cases and a literature review.

We report 2 cases of Haemophilus parainfluenzae endocarditis and review 34 cases of HACEK endocarditis from the literature. HACEK organisms are the most common cause of Gram-negative endocarditis in children. They have a propensity to form friable vegetations (especially H. parainfluenzae) that break off and cause symptomatic emboli. HACEK endocarditis (from a review of the 36 published cases) may involve previously normal hearts (33%), may be complicated by embolization (31%) and may require vegetectomy or other surgery (31%). Mortality with HACEK endocarditis was 14%. HACEK organisms may be

Highly transformable Haemophilus influenzae as a potential amplifier of quinolone resistance dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Horizontal gene transfer in Haemophilus spp. is associated with antimicrobial resistance development. Recently, a relationship between quinolone resistance and this transfer has been reported. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying quinolone resistance spread by focusing on both homogeneous and heterogeneous transfer to H. influenzae. METHODS: Quinolone-resistant strains of three Haemophilus spp., H. influenzae, H. haemolyticus, and H. parainfluenzae, were used as resistant donors. The H. influenzae laboratory strain Rd and the highly transformable strains 2017-

Haemophilus Species as a Urinary Tract Pathogen.

Haemophilus species, as a urinary tract pathogen, is rarely encountered. Routine urine culture pathogens are well documented to include Enterobacteriaciae, Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Candida spp. Pathogens encountered rarely in this context may include Corynebacterium ureolyticus and nonfermenting gram negative bacilli. This case study involves the finding of Haemophilus influenzae in a urine culture performed on a 4-year-old Caucasian girl and Haemophilus parinfluenzae in a 60-year-old African American man with pyelonephritis. Spectrum and antimicrobial resistance of common pathogenic bacteria isolated from patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in mainland of China.

BACKGROUND: Bacteria-induced respiratory infection has been long considered to be the major cause of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Therefore, a clear picture about the distribution and drug-resistance of pathogenic bacteria in the lower airways should be helpful for treatment of the disease. So far, data on this topic among Chinese are lacking. METHODS: A surveillance study was performed in consecutive patients with AECOPD at five areas in China between October 2006 and April 2008. The sputum from these patients was cultured and isolated for bacteria. A

Spatial ecology of Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter in the human oral cavity.

UNLABELLED: Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter are two of the most common bacterial genera in the human oral cavity, encompassing both commensals and pathogens of substantial ecological and medical significance. In this study, we conducted a metapangenomic analysis of oral Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter species to uncover genomic diversity, phylogenetic relationships, and habitat specialization within the human oral cavity. Using three metrics-pangenomic gene content, phylogenomics, and average nucleotide identity (ANI)-we first identified distinct species and sub-species groups among these gene

Anthocyanin-Rich Extract Mitigates the Contribution of the Pathobiont Genus Haemophilus in Mild-to-Moderate Ulcerative Colitis Patients.

Anthocyanins (ACs) have been shown to elicit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in animal models of ulcerative colitis (UC). Furthermore, we previously observed in a double-blind randomized trial in UC patients that biochemical disease activity tended to be lower in patients that were exposed to AC. Here, we report on the changes in the fecal microbiome composition in these patients upon AC exposure. UC patients received a 3 g daily dose of an AC-rich bilberry extract (ACRE) for eight weeks. We determined the microbiome composition in longitudinal stool samples from 24 patients and quan

Difficulties in species identification within the genus Haemophilus - A pilot study addressing a significant problem for routine diagnostics.

Diagnostic misidentifications of commensalic Haemophilus haemolyticus as pathogenic Haemophilus influenzae are frequent. This pilot study evaluates whether isolations of H. haemolyticus are frequent enough in Germany to cause a relevant diagnostic problem, considering the fact that even H. influenzae is a mere colonizer in about 30% of isolations. In microbiological laboratories of two hospitals located in Northern and Southern Germany, the distribution of Haemophilus spp. was analyzed during a six-month-period. Site of infection, sex, and age of the patients was taken into consideration. A to
