Differential Expression of CircRNAs in Embryonic Heart Tissue Associated with Ventricular Septal Defect.

Objectives: To explore and validate the differential expression of circRNAs in the myocardium of congenital ventricular septal defect (VSD) and to explore a new avenue of research regarding the pathological mechanisms of VSD. Methods: We detected circRNAs expression profiles in heart tissues taken from six aborted fetuses with VSD and normal group using circRNA microarray. Some differentially expressed circRNAs were studied by bioinformatics analysis. Finally, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to confirm these results. Results: This study foun

Total endoscopic repair of atrial septal defect under on-pump beating heart.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the techniques for total endoscopic atrial septal defect (ASD) repair on hearts arrested with cardioplegia through three small incisions in the chest wall without aid of a surgical robotic system. The optimal results motivated us to use total thoracoscopic technology for ASD on perfused beating hearts. METHODS: From 2010 to 2017, 161 patients with a mean age of 28.31±12.34 years who underwent non-robotically assisted total thoracoscopic closure for ASD were included in this study, and those patients were also divided into two groups, including group A and gr

Septum primum atrial septal defect in an infant with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a form of congenital heart disease characterized by severe underdevelopment of the left heart, leading to inadequate systemic blood flow. Several different atrial septal morphologies are observed in HLHS, most commonly a secundum atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale, intact septum, and leftward displacement of the superior attachment of the septum primum. It has been postulated that atrial septal development is associated with the development of the left heart. We present a case of a newborn infant with HLHS and the unusual finding of a primum AS

Mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension related to ventricular septal defect in congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in molecular mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension between patients with complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA) combined with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and those with VSD alone. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients with pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure > 30 mm Hg) underwent surgical correction of TGA + VSD (n = 10) or VSD alone (n = 14). Lung specimens were taken from the right middle lobe before cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Extent of pulmonary hypertension was graded according to the

[Acute left heart failure after interventional occlusion of an atrial septal defect].

Congestive left ventricular failure after surgical closure of an atrial septal defect (ASD) has been repeatedly reported, particularly in the elderly. We present a case of left ventricular failure after a successful transcatheter closure of an ASD, which to our knowledge has not been described before. In a 78-year-old woman (50 kg, 160 cm) with well-preserved left ventricular function (ejection fraction 65%) and without coronary artery disease or arterial hypertension, an ASD (Qp/Qs 1.6:1) was closed with an Amplatzer Septal Occluder without a residual shunt. Two hours after the procedure, she

Congenital cataract, microphthalmia and septal heart defect in two generations: a new syndrome?

The association of congenital cataracts, microphthalmia and heart disease is well recognized in fetal rubella, but genetic causes are comparatively rare and recurrence risks are usually low. We describe a woman with an atrial septal defect, bilateral congenital cataracts, unilateral microphthalmia and minor dysmorphic features, originally attributed to an unidentified infection in utero, whose daughter has a similar constellation of heart, eye and facial abnormalities. This may represent a new dominantly inherited syndrome.

Prenatal exposure to zidovudine and risk for ventricular septal defects and congenital heart defects: data from the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk for ventricular septal defects and congenital heart defects following zidovudine exposure during pregnancy using data from the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. STUDY DESIGN: Data on 16,304 prospectively reported pregnancies were analyzed to estimate the frequency and risk of ventricular septal defects and congenital heart defects, comparing exposure between zidovudine-containing regimens and non-zidovudine antiretroviral regimens. The numerator includes defect cases in outcomes at ≥ 20 weeks of gestational age. The denominator includes live birth outcomes. Infa

The search for borderline hearts within biventricular repairs of complete atrioventricular septal defects.

OBJECTIVES: To discover distinct clusters of morphologic features within the spectrum of complete atrioventricular septal defect among children who underwent biventricular repair and determine their association with postrepair mortality and left atrioventricular valve reintervention. METHODS: From January 1, 2012, to July 1, 2024, 685 children with complete atrioventricular septal defect enrolled across 34 Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society hospitals underwent biventricular repair and had core laboratory analysis of a preintervention echocardiogram. Complete heart block after occlusion and repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Complete atrioventricular conduction block (CAVB) is a major complication of the repair and occlusion of perimembranous ventricular septal defects (pmVSDs). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the incidence and risk factors of CAVB after occlusion and repair of pmVSD. METHODS: We reviewed patients with pmVSDs who underwent occlusion and repair between January 2010 and January 2022. Permanent CAVB was defined as a CAVB requiring permanent pacemaker implantation or occluder extraction. RESULTS: Of 2436 patients who underwent pmVSD repair, 7 (0.3%) developed permanent CAVB. In a

Atrial Septal Defect and Heart Rhythm Disorders: Physiopathological Linkage and Clinical Perspectives.

An atrial septal defect (ASD) is the most common congenital heart defect (CHD) diagnosed in adulthood. It is characterized by significant anatomical heterogeneity and complications that evolve over time. While often asymptomatic in children, the signs of adverse effects of ASD increase with age, including a greater risk of heart failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation (AF), and reduced life expectancy. ASD is traditionally considered a right-heart lesion due to long-term complications such as arrhythmias, right-sided heart failure, thromboembolism, and, in a subset of patients, pulmonary arterial

Ventricular septal defect and congestive heart failure in a common degu (Octodon degus).

We report a case of ventricular septal defect causing congestive heart failure in a two-year-old, male common degu (Octodon degus). The patient presented for anorexia and dental disease, and a grade 4/6 holosystolic cardiac murmur was detected on physical exam. Thoracic radiographs showed cardiomegaly and a diffuse interstitial pulmonary pattern, consistent with congestive heart failure. Echocardiography was supportive of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect exhibiting low-velocity left-to-right shunting, and biatrial enlargement. These diagnoses were confirmed on post-mortem exam, along

Surgical interventions for atrioventricular septal defect subtypes: the pediatric heart network experience.

BACKGROUND: The influence of atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) subtype on outcomes after repair is poorly understood. METHODS: Demographic, procedural, and outcome data were obtained 1 and 6 months after AVSD repair in an observational study conducted at 7 North American centers. RESULTS: The 215 AVSD patients were subtyped as 60 partial, 27 transitional, 120 complete, and 8 with canal-type VSD. Preoperatively, transitional patients had the highest prevalence of moderate or severe left atrioventricular valve regurgitation (LAVVR, p = 0.01). At repair, complete AVSD and canal-type VSD pat

Pulmonary atresia with restrictive ventricular septal defect: a rare congenital heart disease.

An increasing number of burns are associated with a popular hair braiding trend incorporating synthetic hair extensions. These burns occur predominantly in young African American females and across all age groups. The hair technique involves the ends of the braid being dipped in scalding water to prevent unwinding. This process requires the installer to place the attached hair in hot water behind the client to seal the ends of the braid. This burn injury is most frequently reported on the back, shoulder, arm, forearm, thigh, and leg. The reported cases of this burn injury occurred most frequen

[Atrial septal defect with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: a case of open-heart surgery].

A 40-year-old woman of atrial septal defect associated with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) was successfully operated upon under cardio-pulmonary bypass. Steroids had been given preoperatively, resulting in an increase of the platelet count from 0.7 X 10(4)/mm3 to 20.6 X 10(4)/mm3. Steroids could be withdrawn before the operation. No bleeding tendency was encountered during and after surgery. This is the 6th case of open-heart surgery associated with ITP in the literature.

[Doppler echocardiographic evaluation of right heart pressure in children with ventricular septal defect].

Thirty seven children with ventricular septal defects (VSD) alone or associated with other malformations were examined by Doppler echocardiography to evaluate systolic right ventricular pressure (SRVP) non-invasively. All patients underwent cardiac catheterisation within 48 hours of the Doppler estimation. The maximum interventricular pressure gradient could be assessed in 32 patients (86%) from the recording of the maximum velocity of the VSD jet using the simplified Bernoulli formula. The SRVP was calculated by subtracting the maximum interventricular pressure gradient from the systolic bloo
