Thirteen patients with localized granuloma annulare and 19 with the generalized form of the disease were typed for HLA antigens. The control group consisted of 70 matched apparently healthy subjects. The expression of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens was examined on adult monkey and human retinal cells following injury caused by dissociation. In a panning assay, neurons and glia demonstrated a rapid induction of class I MHC antigens following enzymatic dissociation, and expression was sustained on regenerating neurons as well as on glia in culture. The frequency of human leucocytic antigens (HLA) were studied in 62 patients with scabies and 27 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis to evaluate the role of HLA antigens as genetic markers in the pathogenesis of these parasitic skin diseases. A number of studies suggest that there is a genetic basis for the formation by some haemophilia A patients of antibodies that inactivate factor VIII. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite excellent short-term kidney allograft survival rates, long-term outcomes have not improved. For years, the focus on improving these outcomes revolved around minimization or elimination of calcineurin toxicity. OBJECTIVE: The immunological mechanisms that support persistence and proliferation of ectopic endometrial implants within the peritoneal cavity of women with endometriosis are unknown. Inhibition of natural killer (NK) and cytotoxic T-cell function has been proposed as a mechanism. In a model of congenic and intra-MHC recombinant rat strains, the differential role of various histocompatibility antigens in renal subcapsular transplantation of purified islets of Langerhans is evaluated.
