BACKGROUND: Although osteochondral autograft transplantation (OAT) provides satisfactory outcomes for osteochondral defects, for large defects OAT is often inadequate because of graft availability. Osteochondral allograft transplantation is an alternative treatment for large defects, but this approach is limited by graft storage constraints and carries disease transmission risks. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate, and its positive effect on articular cartilage has been reported. However, the effect of PRF with OAT of osteochondral defects is unknown.

Traumatic cartilage defects of the knee joint occur in an isolated way due to contusions or due to shear forces as a combined injury with ligamentous damage. They must be documented according to localisation, surface involved and depth. In the adult, only the fragment extending into subchondral bone can be refixed. Purely cartilagineous lesions heal spontaneously under partial repair with fibrocartilage; this can equally be surgically stimulated through surgical drillholes or impaction fractures with awls and pins. Since fibrocartilage is known to be mechanically insufficient and is often not

The surfaces of immobilised incus and malleus joints were studied with the scanning electron microscope. The hyaline cartilage showed arthritic changes similar to osteoarthritic big joints of the body. A direct radiologic magnification technique could likewise demonstrate typical arthritic signs. Comparing findings from histologic studies in the literature, we could demonstrate that the intact hyaline cartilage degenerates if the ossicles are immobilised. The minimal static friction of the intact smooth joint surface is a prerequisite for its assumed role namely protection of the inner ear aga

Knowledge of the physiology of the epiphyseal cartilage, respectively epiphyseal plate, is essential for an understanding of defective growth and abnormal modeling of the long bones. The epiphyseal cartilage develops from the embryonal, cartilaginous long bone structure. The histology of the epiphyseal cartilage is characterised by definable zones representing the individual differentiation steps from the reformation of cartilage to chondrolysis. Modeling of the ends of the long bones is also influenced by a transversal and longitudinal direction of growth in the epiphyseal cartilage. The inte

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septum cartilage is a hyaline cartilage that provides structural support to the nasal cavity and midface. Currently, information on its cellular and mechanical properties is widely dispersed and has often been inferred from studies conducted on other cartilage types such as the knee. A detailed understanding of nasal cartilage properties is important for several biological, clinical, and engineering disciplines. The objectives of this scoping review are to (1) consolidate actual existing knowledge on nasal cartilage properties and (2) identify gaps of knowledge and research qu

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of the OMERACT semi-quantitative score by comparing with a quantitative method in the US assessment of hyaline cartilage at the metacarpal head (MH) in patients with RA and healthy controls (HCs).
METHODS: The hyaline cartilage from the second to fifth MHs of both hands was scanned. Hyaline cartilage was scored semi-quantitatively and quantitatively by measuring cartilage thickness and comparing with reference values. In RA patients, radiographic joint space narrowing (JSN) was scored on the same joints using the Simple Erosion Narrowing Score (SENS).
RESULTS:

We evaluated the durability of autologous chondrocyte transplantation grafts in 61 patients treated for isolated cartilage defects on the femoral condyle or the patella and followed up for a mean of 7.4 years (range, 5 to 11). Durability was determined by comparing the clinical status at the long-term follow-up with that found 2 years after the transplantation. After 2 years, 50 of the 61 patients had good or excellent clinical results, and 51 of 61 had good or excellent results at 5 to 11 years later. Grafted areas from 11 of the patients were evaluated with an electromechanical indentation p

Axial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the patellofemoral compartment was performed in 75 patients with arthroscopic correlation. Proton density and T2(2500/20/80) weighted images were obtained in all patients. Chondromalacia in stages I and II could not be reliably identified with MR imaging. For the evaluation of stage III and IV chondromalacia, the accuracy of MR was 89%. Focal or diffuse areas of increased or decreased signal alterations of the hyaline cartilage without a contour deformity or cartilaginous thinning do not correlate reliably with arthroscopic staging of chondromalacia. The treatment of articular cartilage lesions remains one of the great challenges facing orthopedic surgeons today. The technique of chondrocyte transplantation has opened the door for the application of biologic solutions to difficult problems. These techniques will prove the keystone of further advances into biologic joint repair and replacement. Enthusiasm, however, must be tempered by the numerous gaps in cartilage science and the overwhelming need for further long-term data to demonstrate the efficacy of these techniques in thwarting the presumed eventual progression of these lesions towar

The self-healing capacity of cartilage was limited due to absence of vascular, nervous and lymphatic systems. Although many clinical treatments have been used in cartilage defect repair and shown a promising repair result in short term, however, regeneration of complete zonal structure with physiological function, reconstruction cartilage homeostasis and maintaining long-term repair was still an unbridgeable chasm. Cartilage has complex zonal structure and multiple physiological functions, especially, superficial and calcified cartilage played an important role in keeping homeostasis. To addre

Development of drugs able to modify the natural course of osteoarthritis is a major research objective. Imaging methods are needed to evaluate the effect of new medications in the experimental and clinical settings. Conventional radiographs are the gold-standard technique for routine imaging. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has transformed hyaline cartilage imaging by providing direct visualization without exposure to radiation. In addition, MRI can provide direct cartilage volumetry and tissue characterization for research purposes, using specific sequences. MRI can also give inform

In order to repair cartilage defect in joint with transplantation of cryopreserved homologous embryonic periosteum, 30 rabbits were used and divided into two groups. A 4 mm x 7 mm whole thickness cartilage defect was made in the patellar groove of femur of each rabbit. The homologous embryonic rabbit skull periosteum (ERSP), preserved in two-step freezing schedule, was transplanted onto the cartilage defect of joints of one group and autogenous periosteal graft was done in the joint defect of the other group. The knees were not immobilized, following operation and 16 weeks later, the newly for

The vocal ligaments insert at the anterior and posterior commissures of the larynx. These structures fulfil biomechanical functions, balancing the different elastic moduli of tendon, cartilage or bone and undergo age-related changes that may be responsible for voice changes with increasing age. The aim of this study was to analyse the insertion structures of the vocal ligaments by means of macroscopic, histological, immunohistochemical and electron-microscopic methods and to draw conclusions from age-related structural changes on a functional basis. Investigations were carried out on the laryn

A microscopic ectopic remnant of notochord and hyaline cartilage was an incidental autopsy finding within a vertebral body. Such ectopic notochordal vestiges have been hypothesized to be the origin of vertebral chordomas, but very few have ever been reported. Whereas ectopic notochord has been demonstrated regularly in the spheno-occipital region (in both embryos and adults) and in the sacrococcygeal region (in embryos), the occurrence of such tissue rests in other segments of the vertebral column is extremely rare. The possible relationship of ectopic vertebral notochordal rests to associated

A study of the changes which occur in the intra-articular loose bodies which contain hyaline cartilage, showed the chondrocytes to be very versatile. To effect the transformation of a fractured portion of the articular surface from an angular to a rounded body, peripheral chondrocytes lyse the surrounding glycans and revert to fibroblasts before proliferating and forming fibrocartilage. The central chondrocytes show a wide variety of changes which may mask the original structure of the hyaline cartilage. Remodelling can occur by the formation of osteoclasts. Analogies are drawn between the beh

Osteoarthritis and cartilage lesions are a major cause of functional limitations which is why the goal of biological treatment is to preserve the native joint to delay the onset of OA. As a result of improvements in surgical techniques and technology, treatment options are more and more available, allowing the treatment of a whole range of injuries, from minor to extensive lesions both acute and chronic. In chondral lesion treatment, restoring hyaline-like cartilage provides improved durability of repaired tissue and desirable wear characteristics. Biological cell-based cartilage restoration t

Generating phenotypic chondrocytes from pluripotent stem cells is of great interest in the field of cartilage regeneration. In this study, we differentiated human induced pluripotent stem cells into the mesodermal and ectomesodermal lineages to prepare isogenic mesodermal cell-derived chondrocytes (MC-Chs) and neural crest cell-derived chondrocytes (NCC-Chs), respectively, for comparative evaluation. Our results showed that both MC-Chs and NCC-Chs expressed hyaline cartilage-associated markers and were capable of generating hyaline cartilage-like tissue ectopically and at joint defects. Moreov

Because damage to hyaline cartilage is irreversible, relieving progressive cartilage destruction is an important therapeutic approach for inflammatory arthritis. In the present study, human hyaline chondrocytes were isolated from total knee replacements of 15 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and three with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Synovial fluid of OA (n=25) and RA (n=34) were collected to measure tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) using ELISA. Consistent with previous studies, the synovial fluid exhibited high TNFα levels and hyaline cartilage was severely destroyed in patients with RA. TNFα-t

The formation, topographical location and calcification of cartilage in congenital bicuspid aortic valves of 235 Syrian hamsters aged 0--173 days were studied by histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In all animals the aortic valve was bicuspid; it had two leaflets, ventral and dorsal, each supported by its own aortic sinus. In 141 valves, a more or less developed raphe was located in the ventral sinus. The remaining 94 valves were devoid of any raphe. The first sign of valvular chondrogenesis was the presence of small groups of cells embedded in a type II collagen-po
