Amino Acid-Based Ionic Liquids-Aided CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

This study explored the use of amino acid-based ionic liquids to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into methanol through catalytic hydrogenation. Combining tetrabutylammonium L-argininate (TBA⋅Arg) with the ruthenium Ru-MACHO-BH complex allowed achieving significant yields of methanol under optimized conditions, with a turnover number (TON) up to 700. By systematically varying key reaction parameters, we demonstrated that the TBA⋅Arg ionic liquid promotes the efficient hydrogenation pathway leading to methanol formation, thus offering a sustainable approach to CO2 valorization.

Engineering Metal-MOF Interfaces for Selective CO₂ Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The hydrogenation of CO₂ to methanol is a promising pathway toward sustainable fuel production and carbon recycling. A key factor in the efficiency of this process lies in the interaction between the metal catalyst and its support. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly effective platforms due to their tunable structures, large surface areas, and ability to form stable interfaces with single-atom metals or metal nanoparticles. These metal-MOF interfaces are crucial for stabilizing active sites, preventing sintering, and enhancing catalytic performance. In this concept paper, we

Switchable and Chemoselective Arene Hydrogenation for Efficient Late Stage Applications.

The incorporation of three-dimensional structures into drug molecules has demonstrated significant improvements in clinical success. Late-stage saturation of drug molecules provides a direct pathway for this transformation. However, achieving selective and controllable reduction of aromatic rings remains challenging, particularly when multiple aromatic rings coexist. Herein, we present the switchable and chemoselective hydrogenation of benzene and pyridine rings. The utility of the protocol has been comprehensively investigated in diversified substrates with the assistance of a fragment-screen

Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Ketones Improved by PNN-Manganese Complexes.

Chiral manganese(I) complexes that contain carbocyclic-fused 8-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolinyl groups that are appended with distinct para-R substituents have proven to be effective catalysts in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of a wide range of ketones (48 examples). Notably, Mn2 proved to be the most productive catalyst, allowing an outstanding turnover number of 8300 with catalyst loadings as low as 0.01 mol %. Furthermore, this catalytic protocol shows considerable promise for applications in the synthesis of chiral drugs such as Lusutrombopag.

Catalytic Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of β,γ-Unsaturated α-Diketones.

Asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) has been recognized as a highly valuable strategy that allows access to enantioenriched substances and has been widely applied in the industrial production of drug molecules. However, despite the great success in ATH of ketones, highly efficient, regio- and stereoselective ATH on enones remains underdeveloped. Moreover, optically pure acyloins and 1,2-diols are both extremely useful building blocks in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science, but concise asymmetric approaches allowing access to different types of acyloins and 1,2-dio

Zn Redistribution and Volatility in ZnZrOx Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation.

ZnO-ZrO2 mixed oxide (ZnZrOx) catalysts are widely studied as selective catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation into methanol at high-temperature conditions (300-350 °C) that are preferred for the subsequent in situ zeolite-catalyzed conversion of methanol into hydrocarbons in a tandem process. Zn, a key ingredient of these mixed oxide catalysts, is known to volatilize from ZnO under high-temperature conditions, but little is known about Zn mobility and volatility in mixed oxides. Here, an array of ex situ and in situ characterization techniques (scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray sp

Heterogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation of 3-Phenylpropionitrile over Palladium on Carbon.

A previously developed and industrially feasible process for selective, Pd-mediated, liquid-phase heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines was extended to the reduction of 3-phenylpropionitrile (PPN) to 3-phenylpropylamine (PPA). PPN, which belongs to the homologous series of benzonitrile (BN) and benzyl cyanide (BC), was hydrogenated under mild reaction conditions (30-80 °C, 6 bar), over Pd/C, in two immiscible solvents (dichloromethane/water) and using acidic additives (NaH2PO4 and H2SO4). Although relatively high conversion (76%) was achieved, the selectivity to P

Properties of disorder-engineered black titanium dioxide nanoparticles through hydrogenation.

The recent discovery of "black" TiO2 nanoparticles with visible and infrared absorption has triggered an explosion of interest in the application of TiO2 in a diverse set of solar energy systems; however, what a black TiO2 nanoparticle really is remains a mystery. Here we elucidate more properties and try to understand the inner workings of black TiO2 nanoparticles with hydrogenated disorders in a surface layer surrounding a crystalline core. Contrary to traditional findings, Ti(3+) here is not responsible for the visible and infrared absorption of black TiO2, while there is evidence of mid-ga

Faecal hydrogen production in vitro as an indicator for in vivo hydrogen producing capability in the breath hydrogen test.

In the assessment of carbohydrate malabsorption, it is important to determine if a flat breath hydrogen test is a false negative result. Currently, the only reliable way to do this is with a lactulose test. We determined the reliability of assessing faecal hydrogen production as an indicator of an adequate in vivo hydrogen producing colonic bacterial flora. Unfortunately, the results clearly show that the incidence of falsely positive and negative faecal hydrogen production, when compared with in vivo lactulose testing, is so high that the simple faeces screening test is unsuitable for routine

Reversible Interlayer Coupling/Decoupling in Bilayer Graphene Regulated by Electrochemical Hydrogenation.

Chemical functionalization can effectively regulate the properties of graphene by altering π electrons, but the direct control of interlayer interaction in bilayer graphene (BLG) by such a technique remains elusive. Herein, we report an in situ observation of reversible interlayer coupling/decoupling in BLG, which is sensitive to electrochemical hydrogenation. It is found that electrochemical potential applied via an organic electrolyte containing protons causes preferential hydrogenation of one graphene layer in BLG, accompanied by the presence of new Raman modes. At the same time, the other

In situ generated iridium nanoparticle-catalyzed highly efficient hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

The catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines is a pivotal transformation, often hindered by the formation of hazardous intermediates and the need for substantial catalyst loadings under mild conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that the commercially available pre-catalyst [Ir(COD)Cl]2 facilitates this transformation with remarkable efficiency (substrate-to-catalyst molar ratio S/C = 1000-100 000) under mild conditions (50 °C, 60 atm H2), through the in situ generation of the active Ir nanoparticle (NP) catalyst. This system achieves quantitative conversion and exceptional isolat

Iridium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Carbocation Precursors via Wagner-Meerwein Rearrangement.

Carbocation rearrangement is a powerful tool for converting a simple precursor into a complex molecular scaffold. However, controlling the stereoselectivity of a reaction that involves carbocation rearrangement is challenging and remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate a novel iridium-catalyzed Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement and asymmetric hydrogenation of carbocation precursors (1-(aryl)-1-(1-methylcyclobutyl/cyclopentyl) ethan-1-ol) for the synthesis of various optically active gem-dimethyl cycloalkanes. Hence, enantiopure gem-dimethyl-containing compounds are important motifs found in

Thermochemical Polarization-Driven Heterolytic Hydrogenation in an Electrochemical Palladium-Membrane Reactor.

Heterolytic hydrogenation via hydride species transfer represents a fundamental transformation in industry for chemical synthesis, but H2 or organic hydride donors are often utilized as the hydrogen source. An electrochemical palladium (Pd) membrane reactor shows the ability to catalyze heterolytic reactions by using water as the hydrogen source, but quantitative descriptions of this reactivity remain absent, and the reaction often relies on external polarization of the chemical compartment. Herein, we report thermochemical polarization-driven heterolytic hydrogenation in an electrochemical Pd

Tailoring Hydrogenation Pathway to Redirect CO2 Electroreduction From Ethylene to Ethanol.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to ethanol faces a fundamental challenge: competing ethylene formation through shared C2 intermediates. While previous studies focused on modifying catalyst electronic structures or increasing *CO coverage, the critical role of competitive hydrogenation pathways remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the selectivity between ethanol and ethylene is governed by the balance between Langmuir-Hinshelwood (surface *H) and Eley-Rideal (solvent H) hydrogenation mechanisms. Through hierarchically assembled BPEI/PT interfaces, we dynamically modulate this balance by
