Mesh-based approach for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures of interest in radiotherapy.

In this paper a method based on mesh surfaces approximations for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures in Radiotherapy (RT) is presented. Parotid glands meshes constructed from Megavoltage CT (MVCT) images were studied in terms of volume, distance between center of mass (distCOM) of the right and left parotids, dice similarity coefficient (DICE), maximum distance between meshes (DMax) and the average symmetric distance (ASD). A comparison with the standard binary images approach was performed. While absence of significant differences in terms of volume, DistCOM and DICE indices suggests tha

PVCsNet : A Specialized Artificial Intelligence-Based Model to Classify Premature Ventricular Contractions From ECG Images.

Premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) are irregularities in heart rhythm where the ventricles contract earlier than expected, disrupting the normal cardiac cycle. Identifying the origin of PVCs before surgery is crucial as it can reduce operation duration, lower radiation exposure, and potentially enhance ablation success rates. Current detection methods face limitations in accuracy and data processing, often requiring large datasets and complex interpretations. This study presents PVCsNet, a deep-learning network specifically designed for classifying premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) in

Accelerated and memory-efficient clutter filtering toward online-compatible ultrasound localization microscopy via compressed-matrix randomized QRD.

Ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) enables super-resolution visualization of cerebral microvasculature; however, its clinical translation is hindered by the substantial computational burden of singular value decomposition (SVD)-based clutter filtering. To address this issue, we propose Compressed-Matrix Randomized QR Decomposition (CM-rQRD) as an accelerated and memory-efficient filtering framework. By integrating a Compressed-Matrix strategy into rQRD-based methods, the computational complexity of the decomposition step is substantially reduced. Specifically, the proposed methods achiev

EEG based time and frequency dynamics analysis of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS).

3D movies are attracting the viewers as they can see the objects flying out of the screen. However, many viewers have reported various problems which are usually faced after watching 3D movies. These problems include visual fatigue, eye strain, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision or collectively may be termed as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). This research focuses on the comparison between 3D passive technology with a conventional 2D technology to find that whether 3D is causing trouble in the viewers or not. For this purpose, an experiment was designed in which participants were ra

Computer-assisted diagnosis in colposcopy: results of a preliminary experiment?

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is currently based on the histological result of an aiming biopsy. This preliminary study investigated whether diagnostics for CIN can potentially be improved using semiautomatic colposcopic image analysis. METHODS: 198 women with unremarkable or abnormal smears underwent colposcopy examinations. 375 regions of interest (ROIs) were manually marked on digital screen shots of the streaming documentation, which we provided during our colposcopic examinations (39 normal findings, 41 CIN I, and 118 CIN II-III). These ROIs were classifi

ACU-TransNet: Attention and convolution-augmented UNet-transformer network for polyp segmentation.

BACKGROUND: UNet has achieved great success in medical image segmentation. However, due to the inherent locality of convolution operations, UNet is deficient in capturing global features and long-range dependencies of polyps, resulting in less accurate polyp recognition for complex morphologies and backgrounds. Transformers, with their sequential operations, are better at perceiving global features but lack low-level details, leading to limited localization ability. If the advantages of both architectures can be effectively combined, the accuracy of polyp segmentation can be further improved.

Dynamic expert routing with boundary-aware decoding for accurate brain tumor segmentation from incomplete MRI data.

Precise segmentation of brain tumors from multi-modal MRI scans is critical to clinical diagnosis and therapeutic planning, but real images from MRI machines are often lacking in some modalities due to variability in acquisition procedures or clinical limitations. This study proposes a modality-agnostic approach to segmentation of tumors from incomplete MRI scans and ultimately creates a framework that effectively supports the robust segmentation of tumors in incomplete input. The framework employs adaptive expert routing combined with low-rank adaptation and cross-modality consistency regular

A novel sub-differentiable hausdorff loss combined with BCE for MRI brain tumor segmentation using UNet variants.

Brain tumor segmentation is a crucial yet complex task in medical image analysis, playing a vital role in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. However, it faces several inherent challenges: (1) class imbalance, where tumors occupy a minimal portion of MRI scans, leading models to favor healthy tissue; (2) low sensitivity to small or irregular tumors, resulting in high false negatives; and (3) limitations of standard loss functions, which often fail to properly emphasize tumor boundaries.TraditionalHausdorff Loss, despite its effectiveness in boundary alignment, suffers from non-different

A study on the value of computer-assisted assessment for SPECT/CT-scans in sentinel lymph node diagnostics of penile cancer as well as clinical reliability and morbidity of this procedure.

BACKGROUND: Because of the increasing importance of computer-assisted post processing of image data in modern medical diagnostic we studied the value of an algorithm for assessment of single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT)-data, which has been used for the first time for lymph node staging in penile cancer with non-palpable inguinal lymph nodes. In the guidelines of the relevant international expert societies, sentinel lymph node-biopsy (SLNB) is recommended as a diagnostic method of choice. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of the afore-mentione

Measuring the positional accuracy of computer assisted surgical tracking systems.

Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) technology is constantly evolving with support from a growing number of clinical trials. In contrast, reports of technical accuracy are scarce, with there being no recognized guidelines for independent measurement of the basic static performance of computer assisted systems. To address this problem, a group of surgeons, academics and manufacturers involved in the field of CAOS collaborated with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International and drafted a set of standards for measuring and reporting the technical performance of s

GLGFormer: Global Local Guidance Network for Mucosal Lesion Segmentation in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Images.

Automatic mucosal lesion segmentation is a critical component in computer-aided clinical support systems for endoscopic image analysis. Image segmentation networks currently rely mainly on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformers, which have demonstrated strong performance in various applications. However, they cannot cope with blurred lesion boundaries and lesions of different scales in gastrointestinal endoscopy images. To address these challenges, we propose a new Transformer-based network, named GLGFormer, for the task of mucosal lesion segmentation. Specifically, we design th

Computer-aided diagnosis of skeletal metastases in multi-parametric whole-body MRI.

The confident detection of metastatic bone disease is essential to improve patients' comfort and increase life expectancy. Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been successfully used for monitoring of metastatic bone disease, allowing for comprehensive and holistic evaluation of the total tumour volume and treatment response assessment. The major challenges of radiological reading of whole-body MRI come from the amount of data to be reviewed and the scattered distribution of metastases, often of complex shapes. This makes bone lesion detection and quantification demanding for

REDNet: Reliable Evidential Discounting Network for Multi-Modality Medical Image Segmentation.

In the field of computer-aided diagnosis, particularly for tumor diseases, segmentation is a prerequisite and primary step. Multi-modality images become essential for achieving accurate segmentation, which offer critical insights beyond the limitations of single-modality data. However, different modalities and images may suffer from different types of data imperfection, such as intensity non-uniformity, motion artifact, and low quality due to hardware limitations, which challenge image segmentation algorithms. To address this challenge, we propose a Reliable Evidential Discounting Network (RED

BTA-DETR: a multi-domain cooperative perception model for brain tumor detection.

To address the significant challenges in brain tumor magnetic resonance imaging detection-including high morphological heterogeneity of lesions, blurred boundaries, and severe background noise interference-this study proposes a multi-domain cooperative perception model, BTA-DETR (Brain Tumor Aware-DEtection TRansformer). First, we design a content-aware fusion unit, which leverages parallel spatial and channel branches alongside an adaptive gating mechanism to dynamically re-weight local textural details and global semantic features, thereby adaptively capturing the diverse morphologies of les

Performances of experts and automated methods on new multiple sclerosis lesions detection: insights from the MSSeg2 challenge.

The assessment of new Multiple Sclerosis (MS) lesions is a time-consuming and difficult task that may lead to an underestimation of patient disease activity. Efficient methods to detect new T2/FLAIR lesions are therefore critical to assist clinicians in this process. In this context, we proposed and organized in 2021 the MSSeg2 challenge aiming at comparing methods segmenting new MS lesions. For this purpose, we built a high-quality dataset of 100 pairs of FLAIR MRI with precise delineation of new MS lesions with a size superior to 3 mm[Formula: see text]. From these 100 pairs of MS patient im

Causal recurrent intervention for cross-modal cardiac image segmentation.

Cross-modal cardiac image segmentation is essential for cardiac disease analysis. In diagnosis, it enables clinicians to obtain more precise information about cardiac structure or function for potential signs by leveraging specific imaging modalities. For instance, cardiovascular pathologies such as myocardial infarction and congenital heart defects require precise cross-modal characterization to guide clinical decisions. The growing adoption of cross-modal segmentation in clinical research underscores its technical value, yet annotating cardiac images with multiple slices is time-consuming an

Diagnosing periapical bone lesions on radiographs by means of texture analysis.

Trabecular pattern, the radiographic projection of trabecular bone, is a repeated structure that appears in a dental radiograph. Texture analysis, the computer image analysis of repeated patterns, is a technique that can be used to automate the diagnosis of periapical lesions with the detection of the absence of the texture that corresponds to the trabecular bone. The purpose of this study was to determine whether it is feasible to use texture analysis to identify the presence of the trabecular pattern in radiographs and to detect a periapical bone lesion based on a local absence of this patte

Efficient primal-dual algorithm for imaging applications with matrix stacking, applied to DBT image reconstruction.

The primal-dual hybrid gradient (PDHG) algorithm for solving convex optimization problems that arise in tomographic imaging is revisited. In particular, simplification of the selection of step-size parameters is developed for optimization problems with multiple terms, each containing a linear transform subject to splitting. This simplification maintains algorithm efficiency while avoiding massive grid searches for the optimal parameter settings. The PDHG framework is demonstrated on an image reconstruction problem for wide-angle digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT); use of the proposed optimizat

Contrastive Graph Modeling for Cross-Domain Few-Shot Medical Image Segmentation.

Cross-domain few-shot medical image segmentation (CD-FSMIS) offers a promising and data-efficient solution for medical applications where annotations are severely scarce and multimodal analysis is required. However, existing methods typically filter out domain-specific information to improve generalization, which inadvertently limits cross-domain performance and degrades source-domain accuracy. To address this, we present Contrastive Graph Modeling (C-Graph), a framework that leverages the structural consistency of medical images as a reliable domain-transferable prior. We represent image feat
