Indigenous movement scholarship identifies two primary approaches to claiming indigeneity, strategic essentialism and decolonization, a binary that constrains Indigenous agency by suggesting that Indigenous actors must conform to settler expectations in the short term while postponing decolonization to a later stage. We broaden this perspective by looking at indigeneity from the perspective of constructed authenticity theory, which helps us reveal alternative agentic strategies for claiming identity. We examine how Indigenous leaders, animal rights activists, and policymakers debated Indigenou

This study explores the culturally sensitive palliative and end-of-life care within First Nations communities in the Parry Sound area: Shawanaga, Wasauksing, and Moose Deer Point First Nations communities in Canada. The legacy of colonialism, particularly the Indian Act of 1876, has significantly disrupted Indigenous health practices, contributing to mistrust in Western healthcare systems. This research addresses gaps in culturally appropriate palliative and end-of-life care by identifying how First Nations communities define a "good death" and how Western healthcare providers can respect and

INTRODUCTION: The lack of national fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevalence estimates represents an important knowledge gap.
METHODS: Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, the prevalence of FASD was examined by age, sex and Indigenous identity. Median age of diagnosis and comorbid long-term health conditions were also assessed.
RESULTS: The prevalence of FASD among Canadian children and youth living in private dwellings was 1 per 1000 (0.1%). The prevalence was significantly higher among those who identified as Indigenous and lived off reserve (1.2%)

In Canada and internationally the number of older offenders on parole and living in the community is increasing rapidly. Older offenders in the community are a vulnerable population at high risk for lack of well-being. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with N = 64 offenders aged 50 years and older on conditional release from custody in Canada, including long-term, recidivist, and first-time older offenders. Compared to their non-offender counterparts, older offenders in the community experience many of the same problems of aging and well-being, but are at greater risk for mental health

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous peoples have a disproportionately high prevalence of incarceration in the Canadian justice system. However, there is limited Indigenous-driven research examining colonialism and the justice system, specifically associations between racism, externally imposed family disruptions, and history of ever being incarcerated. Therefore, this study examined the association between the proportion of previous incarceration and family disruption, experiences of racism, and victimization for Indigenous adults in London, Thunder Bay, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The three communities

OBJECTIVE: To examine psychotropic medication prescription practices in federal Canadian penitentiaries.
METHOD: 468 files were drawn from a purposive sample of thirteen Canadian federal institutions representing the five regions, different security levels, and male and female designated facilities. Information on the names of all psychotropic medications prescribed, indications for use, dosage, frequency, and route of administration was retrieved. Designation of approved or off-label use of medications was determined by consulting: (1) the Health Canada (2016) Drug Product Database, (2) the

Much is being said, often dramatically, about the potential hazards of parasitic diseases in Canada, but little or no attempt has been made to determine the true extent of the problem. Indigenous parasite pathogens are recognized in resident Canadians, and pathogens are acquired by travellers abroad or reported from immigrants. The role of each of these categories is important in the characterization of the problem of parasitic diseases in Canada. From data provided by provincial laboratories and hospitals it is estimated that 1 person in 1000 will spend 1 day per year in hospital because of i

Indigenous people in Canada continue to experience systemic racism, disrespect, and loss of autonomy within the healthcare system, particularly in the context of pregnancy and childbirth. Despite national commitments to reconciliation and the recognition of Indigenous rights through frameworks such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the realities of maternity care for Indigenous people are shameful. This study draws on data from a national survey examining respect, mistreatment and autonomy in pregna

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with health-risk behaviors and chronic disease development. Although valuable, conventional ACE surveys may fail to adequately capture the range of adversities that some communities experience. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether First Nations and Metis postsecondary students and staff in Ontario identified domains of ACE not captured by conventional ACE surveys. In addition, this study aimed to identify potential coping strategies or factors.
METHOD: Qualitative interview and focus group methodologies w

BACKGROUND: In Canada, colonial policies have resulted in health inequities between First Nations and other Canadians. These policies contribute to overrepresentation of First Nations in the criminal legal system, where incarcerated people and their infants face elevated health risks. We investigated the association between prenatal incarceration and adverse birth outcomes among First Nations and other birthing parents in Manitoba, Canada.
METHODS: Using linked whole-population administrative data, we identified all live births (2004-2017) in which the birthing parent (First Nations n = 1,449

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic forced many researchers to adjust research methods from in-person to online formats. This paper explores the acceptability and suitability of synchronous online focus groups used to explore housing and health with Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizens, one of 3 constitutionally recognized Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this internet-based survey was to understand the experiences of MNO citizens participating in synchronous online focus groups.
METHODS: Only participants of the "Understanding Housing and Health" project were eligib

The Canadian Frailty Network commissioned this study to gather feedback on the AVOID Frailty model from Indigenous Elders and older adults in the Yukon. Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies, Two-Eyed Seeing, and guided by an Elder co-author this study involved guide conversations to engage 42 participants aged 55 and older across four Yukon communities. Participants raised Activity, Interaction, and Diet spontaneously as central to healthy aging, while Vaccinate and Optimize medications typically required prompting. However, participants reframed these domains in relational and place-

RATIONALE: Bronchiectasis not related to cystic fibrosis is common in indigenous populations globally, but it has not been studied in Canadian indigenous children.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe bronchiectasis in Canadian Inuit children and examine potentially causal factors.
METHODS: We described the clinical features of bronchiectasis in Canadian Inuit children residing in the Qikiqtani (Baffin) Region, Nunavut, Canada, by performing a retrospective chart review of children from this region. Patients had computed tomography-confirmed bronchiectasis and were diagnose

Concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury that affects thousands of children and adolescents across Canada annually. With timely access to comprehensive medical care, the majority of patients with acute concussion will recover within 1-4 weeks. Those who develop persistent post-concussion symptoms often benefit from early recognition and referral to multi-disciplinary concussion clinics that have the personnel and resources to meet their complex needs. Youth who live in remote and isolated communities within Canada's North, a significant proportion of whom are Indigenous, face unique barr

AIM: COVID-19 has had significant mental health impacts internationally and anxiety rates are estimated to have tripled during the pandemic, but the specific causes remain underexplored. This study's purpose was to investigate the associations of sociodemographic factors, COVID-19-related policies, and COVID-19 case/mortality rates with levels of anxiety among Canadians during the pandemic.
METHODS: This study used linear regression models populated with three integrated sources of data: a repeated cross-sectional survey (n = 7008), Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker data, and COVID-

BACKGROUND: Within Manitoba and Saskatchewan, pre-existing health inequities amongst Indigenous groups were intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Service disruptions in the health and social service sector-combined with the effects of intersectional stigma-disproportionately impacted Indigenous peoples living with HIV (IPLH). IPLH experience structural violence and necropolitical exclusion through systemic forms of stigma situated within Canada's expansive colonial history. Utilizing the theoretical foundations of structural violence and necropolitics, this qualitative study examines how t
