Infant colic and maternal mental health: nursing research and practice concerns.

This study compared the mental health of 12 mothers who had infants with colic to 12 mothers of infants without colic. Colic was defined as infant fussing/crying of at least 2 hours/day for at least 5 out of 7 days, infant cry high-pitched and pain-sounding, and maternal report of infant inconsolability. Mental health was operationalized as scores on the Profile of Mood States and the Symptom Checklist-90R. Mothers of infants with colic had multidimensional psychological distress; they reported more bodily dysfunction, fears, disordered thinking, depression, anxiety, fatigue, hostility, impuls

Infant eczema, infant sleeping problems, and mental health at 10 years of age: the prospective birth cohort study LISAplus.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies suggest an association between eczema and mental health problems, possibly modified by sleeping problems, but prospective evidence is missing. We aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between infant eczema (within first 2 years of age), infant sleeping problems (within first 2 years of age), and the risk of mental health problems at 10 years of age. METHODS: Between 1997 and 1999, a population-based birth cohort was recruited in Munich, Leipzig, Wesel, and Bad Honnef, Germany, and followed until 10 years of age. Physician-diagnosed eczema, par

Immigration Policy and the Health of Latina Mothers and Their Infants.

Restrictive immigration policies may adversely affect the health of Latina mothers and their infants. We hypothesized that undocumented Latina mothers and their US born children would have worse birth outcomes and healthcare utilization following the November 2016 election. We used a controlled interrupted time series to estimate the impact of the 2016 presidential election on low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, maternal depression, well child visit attendance, cancelled visits, and emergency department (ED) visits among infants born to Latina mothers on emergency Medicaid, a proxy for undo

Cardiac and vascular health in late preterm infants.

Adults who were born preterm are at increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease in later life. Infants born late preterm are the majority of preterm births; however, the effect of late preterm on risk of cardiovascular disease is unclear. The objective of this study was to assess whether vascular health and cardiac autonomic control differ in a group of late preterm newborn infants compared to a group of term-born infants.A total of 35 healthy late preterm newborn infants, with normal growth (34-36 completed weeks' gestation) and 139 term-born infants (37-42 weeks' gestation) wer

Periodontal health in mothers of preterm and term infants.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have suggested that chronic periodontitis may induce an inflammatory response which can cause premature delivery. This study was designed to assess the association between periodontal health and preterm labor in Iranian female population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 201 pregnant women without systemic disease or other risk factors for preterm labor were chosen. The control group (n = 99) had term labor (infants > or =37 weeks) and the case group (n = 102) had preterm labor (infants < 37 weeks). Bleeding index, pocket depth and debris index were

Mental health assessment of infants in foster care.

Infants placed in foster care are at high risk for emotional and behavioral problems. Assessment of their mental health must account for their often-adverse life experiences prior to placement and the involvement of multiple systems that shape their lives in lieu of parents' authority. This article presents practice guidelines for infant mental health evaluations with consideration of legal requirements and the unique issues conferred by foster care.

The Impact of Vitamin D Deficiency on Infants' Health.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in bone health and musculoskeletal development. The aim of this narrative review is to present up-to-date information about the impact of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) on the health status of infants in their first year of life. Vitamin D is indispensable for skeletal growth and bone health, and emerging research suggests that it may also have significant roles in maternal and fetal health. VDD affects a large proportion of infants according to current guidelines. However, its prevalence varies depending on geographic location, skin pigme

Micronutrient Intakes and Health Outcomes in Preterm Infants.

Deficiency or excess of specific micronutrients is common in preterm infants and can have many effects on health outcomes, ranging from life-threatening electrolyte disturbances to long-term effects on growth, brain development, bone health, and the risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Iron supplementation of low birth weight infants reduces the risk of behavioral problems. However, due to the risk of adverse effects, iron supplementation of very preterm infants in the NICU should be individualized, considering birth weight, postnatal age, diet, and serum ferritin concentrations. Body Fatness and Cardiovascular Health in Newborn Infants.

Birth weight is associated with cardiovascular disease, with those at both ends of the spectrum at increased risk. However, birth weight is a crude surrogate of fetal growth. Measures of body composition may more accurately identify high risk infants. We aimed to determine whether aortic wall thickening, cardiac autonomic control, and cardiac structure/function differ in newborns with high or low body fatness compared to those with average body fatness. 189 healthy singleton term born neonates were recruited and stratified by body fat percentiles (sex and gestation-specific). Infants with low

Effectiveness of an oral health program for mothers and their infants.

BACKGROUND: The baby oral health program (bOHP) provides pregnant women and their future babies with oral care. AIM: To assess the bOHP effectiveness by comparing caries prevalence in infants enrolled and not enrolled in the oral health program (OHP). DESIGN: Mothers who had been invited to participate in the bOHP from 2006 to 2009 were contacted. Two groups were formed: 87 pairs of mothers and infants who effectively participated in the OHP (G1) and 107 pairs who did not (G2). Mothers and infants were given a dental examination. Neonatal health of infants born to mothers with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Maternal asthma is associated with serious pregnancy complications, but newborn morbidity is understudied. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to determine whether infants of asthmatic mothers have more neonatal complications. METHODS: The Consortium on Safe Labor (2002-2008), a retrospective cohort, included 223,512 singleton deliveries at ≥ 23 weeks' gestation. Newborns of mothers with asthma (n = 17,044) were compared with newborns of women without asthma by using logistic regression models with generalized estimating equations to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. The impact of social determinants of health on infant and maternal health using a reproductive justice lens.

BACKGROUND: Rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions continue to rise in the United States (US). Social determinants of health (SDOH) are recognized as significant contributors to infant and maternal health, underscoring the need for use of research frameworks that incorporate SDOH concepts. The Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT) theoretical framework is rooted in reproductive justice (i.e. reproductive rights and social justice-based framework) and emphasizes both structural and social determinants as root causes of health ineq

Infants Exposed To Homelessness: Health, Health Care Use, And Health Spending From Birth To Age Six.

Homeless infants are known to have poor birth outcomes, but the longitudinal impact of homelessness on health, health care use, and health spending during the early years of life has received little attention. Linking Massachusetts emergency shelter enrollment records for the period 2008-15 with Medicaid claims, we compared 5,762 infants who experienced a homeless episode with a group of 5,553 infants matched on sex, race/ethnicity, location, and birth month. Infants born during a period of unstable housing resulting in homelessness had higher rates of low birthweight, respiratory problems, fe

Linking maternal childhood maltreatment to infant socioemotional development through perinatal mental health.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with an elevated risk of experiencing psychological problems, particularly during the perinatal period. Maternal history of CM is also associated with disruptions to offspring socioemotional development. One potential pathway through which maternal CM contributes to offspring socioemotional development is through maternal mental health. OBJECTIVE: The present study explored how maternal CM is associated with infant socioemotional development through maternal mental health, both during pregnancy and postpartum. Metabolic health conditions in pregnancy, human milk hormone concentrations, and infant adiposity.

OBJECTIVE: To explore differences in human milk hormones with metabolic conditions (obesity and/or diabetes) during pregnancy and the relationship with infant adiposity. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective cohort of term and preterm infants, hormones were measured in early human milk, and growth was assessed at discharge. Differences in hormones by metabolic conditions and the relationship with growth were modeled using quantile and linear regression. RESULT: Among 38 infants (mean gestational age 35.2 weeks), 50% were in the metabolic-group. Milk leptin was higher in the metabolic-group, with me

Changes in Maternal Care and Infant Health After Noneconomic Damage Cap Repeals.

IMPORTANCE: Noneconomic damage caps, a form of medical malpractice law, remain controversial, as several states have enacted such laws since 2010, whereas others have repealed them. The clinical consequences of repealing these caps are poorly understood, and understanding these associations can inform the ongoing debate about medical malpractice reform. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether repealing noneconomic damage caps is associated with changes in maternal care and infant health outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study adopted a difference-in-differences design,

Fetal attachment and infant temperament: The mediating role of perinatal mental health.

Maternal bond with the offspring is established prior to childbirth, with fetal attachment becoming particularly salient in the third trimester of pregnancy. There is limited research addressing links between prenatal bonding and infant temperament in the context of perinatal anxiety and depression. The present study addressed this gap, examining relations between prenatal attachment (measured in the third trimester via the Prenatal Attachment Inventory-Revised), perinatal maternal mental health assessed in the third trimester and 2 months postpartum using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the
