The Cognitive Change Index in the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center setting: Self- and informant-ratings for perceived cognitive decline.

INTRODUCTION: The Cognitive Change Index (CCI) is a brief questionnaire that assesses self and informant perceptions regarding cognitive function. We examined the ability of the CCI to distinguish between cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. METHODS: 485 individuals from the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (IADRC) and their study partners completed 20-item self and informant versions of the CCI. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed to assess differentiation between CU an

Presenting Clinical Information on Rare Chromosome 6 Disorders via a Parent-Centered Website: Parental and Professional Views.

The scarcity of clinical information surrounding rare chromosome disorders poses challenges for parents and clinicians. To bridge this gap for chromosome 6 disorders, the Chromosome 6 Project collects detailed genotype and phenotype data, aiming to provide aberration-specific phenotype information to parents via an interactive website. With input from 32 parents and 21 professionals, including medical doctors, cytogeneticists, health psychologists, and communication specialists, we used a three-round Delphi method to determine the type and amount of health-related information to be presented o

Determining the Cancer Center priorities at the Wilmot Cancer Institute: A proposed framework informed by an academic-community collaborative approach.

Current National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines include a Community Outreach and Engagement merit descriptor related to the justification of Cancer Center priorities. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance and published literature on the process of determining the Cancer Center priorities. The purpose of this commentary is to propose a framework for Cancer Center prioritization, informed by the academic-community collaborative approach that the Wilmot Cancer Institute (Wilmot) at the University of Rochester implemented as part of a successful application for NC

Quality of Patient-Centered eHealth Information on Erosive Tooth Wear: Systematic Search and Evaluation of Websites and YouTube Videos.

BACKGROUND: Due to the declining prevalence of dental caries, noncarious tooth defects such as erosive tooth wear have gained increased attention over the past decades. While patients more frequently search the internet for health-related information, the quality of patient-centered, web-based health information on erosive tooth wear is currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the quality of patient-centered, web-based health information (websites and YouTube videos) on erosive tooth wear. METHODS: German-language websites were systematically identified through 3 electronic s

Lack of visual information alters lower limb motor coordination to control center of mass trajectory during walking.

Vision, as queen of the senses, plays a critical role in guiding locomotion. Little is known about the effects of vision on gait coordination in terms of variability. The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach offers a window to the structure of motor variability that has been difficult to obtain from the traditional correlation analysis. In this study, we used the UCM analysis to quantify how the lower limb motion is coordinated to control the center of mass (COM) while walking under different visual conditions. We also probed how synergy strength evolved along the stance phase. Ten healthy par

Applying human-centered design to identify needs and generate recommendations to inform an integrated maternal health demonstration model.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality continues to rise in concerning rates in the United States. Maternal mortality risks are increased by clinical factors like cardiovascular disease or infection and nonclinical factors like food insecurity, unequal access to healthcare, and systemic racism. Integrated care coordination programs aimed at addressing care needs are emerging as best practices to improve maternal health outcomes at and post birth. Our goal was to (i) evaluate the care needs during pregnancy and postpartum and (ii) formulate recommendations for integrating a clinic-level model and commu

The impact of audiovisual information on parental anxiety levels prior to hypospadias surgery: A prospective single center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Most parents have anxiety before a pediatric surgical procedure. Parental anxiety may impair the parents' ability to cope with new or stressful situations while their children are undergoing surgery. By effectively improving the education of parents regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and potential complications of hypospadias and surgical repair, it might be feasible to reduce their anxiety during this process. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether structured audiovisual information would reduce parents' anxiety levels compared to classic verbal information. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The

eDakterBari: A human-centered solution enabling online medical consultation and information dissemination for resource-constrained communities in Bangladesh.

A well-accessible healthcare system is an important measure of the progress of a country, as access to adequate healthcare is one of everyone's very basic human rights. When a community lives below the poverty line, unfortunately, it gets deprived of the basic human rights like healthcare, which is a reality to many resource-constrained communities around the world. The number of such resource-constrained communities in developing countries is large. Orphans present a prominent example in this regard in the context of Bangladesh. Orphans suffer greatly from many diseases due to their resource-

Lived Experience: A Case-Based Review of Trauma-Informed Hospice and Palliative Care at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Many individuals who present for hospice or palliative care might have experienced trauma during their lives, with some progressing to post-traumatic stress disorder. As these individuals face life-limiting illness, trauma might resurface. Consequently, physical and emotional health might suffer due to exacerbation of trauma-related symptoms, such as anxiety, irritability, or flashbacks. Providing trauma-informed care can help mitigate the effects of trauma for those facing life-limiting illness who might not be able to tolerate formal trauma treatment due to limited prognosis, fatigue, or lac

Postdonation information during dengue outbreaks at a single blood center in Brazil: An ally against transfusion-transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian blood banks encourage donors to report postdonation information (PDI) regarding conditions that would lead to deferral in an attempt to retrieve distributed nonconforming blood. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the profile of donors reporting PDI, the impact on transfusion safety, and the possible impact on the discard of blood products. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 115 consecutive PDIs between May 2014 and July 2015, a period comprising two dengue-like syndrome (DLS) outbreaks. RESULTS: These PDIs accounted for 87,780 blood donations. The average time for PDIs si

Exploring Provider Perspectives on Gaps in Trauma-Informed Care Delivery Within the Acute Care Surgery Timeline at a Federally Qualified Health Center: Human-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed care (TIC) education plays a pivotal role in preparing physicians to deliver care to patients who have experienced emotional and physical trauma, empowering patients to have agency in their care. The delivery of TIC by providers is especially important at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), as their patients disproportionately experience trauma due to the impacts of socioeconomic determinants of health, including limited health care access, systemic racism, and housing insecurity. There is limited literature on how to adapt TIC practices in acute care settin

Predicting the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) in patients admitted to trauma centers after trauma: A modeling study based on data from the French National Programme for Medicalization of Information.

BACKGROUND: Reliable mortality prediction is central to trauma research, quality assessment, and resource allocation. While the French national hospital discharge database (PMSI) provides comprehensive nationwide data, it does not capture clinical parameters required for established severity scores such as TRISS, which is used for predicting in-hospital survival after trauma and necessary for implementing national-level evaluations of health system performance. This study tested whether TRISS could nonetheless be accurately derived from PMSI data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study o
