Co-occurrence of birth defects and intellectual disability.

This study used population-based databases to ascertain birth defects and intellectual disability (ID), defined as full IQ < 70, in children born in Western Australia during 1980-99. Of the children surviving to 1 year (n = 474 285), 4.9% had birth defects and 1.3% ID. ID was identified in 7.9% of children with birth defects. After adjusting for sex, mother's age, race, parity, plurality, birthweight and gestational age the prevalence ratio (PR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for ID in children with birth defects compared with those with no birth defects was 7.6 [7.2, 8.0]. Those with chromoso

An assessment of intellectual disability among Aboriginal Australians.

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of Indigenous people is a significant global problem, and Aboriginal Australians suffer from a considerably higher burden of disease and lower life expectancy than the non-Indigenous population. Intellectual disability (ID) can further compromise health, but there is little information that documents the prevalence of ID among indigenous populations. This study provides information on ID among the Aboriginal population of Western Australia. METHODS: The Disability Services Commission (DSC) of Western Australia has maintained a statewide database of people

Early-onset psychosis in youth with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of psychotic disorders may be very difficult in youth with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: The authors reviewed the assessment, treatment and follow-up of 21 youths with ID referred because of early onset of psychotic symptoms. RESULTS: Just over one half of the patients had a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. One third of the sample carried the diagnosis of psychosis NOS (not otherwise specified). After careful review, five out of seven of these psychotic-like cases were assessed as non-psychotic. Patients with Psychosis NOS associated

Disability day programs for people with intellectual disability: Characteristics and long-term perspectives.

There is limited knowledge regarding people with intellectual disability and their occupations in Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine young adults with intellectual disability who after secondary school participate in disability day programs (daily activity), with a focus on characteristics and longitudinal analyses of movements between occupations. The study used a national register of 26,908 people with intellectual disability, of which 13,128 individuals (48.8%) participated in daily activity. The group had slightly more men than women, many had attended individual programs in schoo

Family-Peer Linkages for Children with Intellectual Disability and Children with Learning Disabilities.

Family interactions are potential contexts for children with intellectual and learning disabilities to develop skillful social behaviors needed to relate effectively with peers. This study examined problem solving interactions within families of elementary school-age children (7-11 years) with intellectual disability (n = 37), specific learning disabilities (n =48), and without disabilities (n = 22). After accounting for group differences in children's behaviors and peer acceptance, across all groups, mothers' behaviors that encouraged egalitarian problem solving predicted more engaged and ski

Population Level Mental Health Diagnoses for Youth with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Compared to Youth without Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

There is evidence in the literature that youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) experience mental health issues to a greater extent compared to youth without IDD. In addition, transition from pediatric to adult services may be a period of increased anxiety and mental health problems for these youth. This study used a retrospective cohort design using population level administrative health data to compare mental health diagnoses between youth with IDD and youth without IDD; particularly examining the period when youth transition from pediatric health services to adult health s

Osteoporosis in people with intellectual disabilities: a review and a brief study of risk factors for osteoporosis in a community sample of people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The population of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) is increasing and their health needs impact on primary and secondary healthcare specialities. One important aspect of their physical health is bone health as people with ID have increased risk factors associated with osteoporosis. It has been identified that this population has an increased prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis and osteopenia. The main contributory factors for low BMD are age, use of antiepileptics, immobility and diagnosis of Down's syndrome. METHODS: A literature search of electron

Perspectives on adaptive functioning and intellectual functioning measures for intellectual disabilities behavioral research.

INTRODUCTION: Intellectual disability (ID) is a significant limitation in both intellectual ability and adaptive functioning, but many studies of participants with ID only include a measure of overall intellectual functioning when describing their samples. The purpose of this perspective article was to provide a starting point for future research regarding the utility of including measures of both intellectual and adaptive functioning in research focused on ID. In this article, we discuss the differences and similarities between the constructs of intellectual and adaptive functioning, how they

Couples with intellectual disability where one partner has dementia - a scoping review exploring relationships in the context of dementia and intellectual disability.

Relationships and marriages between couples with intellectual disability are to be celebrated, as is the longer life expectancy now enjoyed by many with intellectual disability. However, dementia disproportionately affects people with intellectual disability, especially people with Down's syndrome. Research into experiences of couples without intellectual disability who are affected by dementia suggests that a relational perspective provides health and social care professionals with information to support the wellbeing of both partners. This dyadic perspective is missing for couples with an in

Cardiovascular Disease Incidence and Risk Factors in Older Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: Results of the Healthy Ageing and Intellectual Disabilities Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that older adults with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, longitudinal studies investigating the actual incidence of CVD and its associated risk factors in this population are limited. Such research is essential for optimising healthcare delivery and informing effective resource allocation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine CVD incidence in older adults with intellectual disabilities and explore its associations with participant characteristics and risk factors. METHOD: A prospective longitudi

Housing in Delaware for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Population.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) encounter numerous barriers in attempting to access housing. Those barriers - financial, physical, and cultural in nature - have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 public health emergency and the related, or co-occurring, shifts that have characterized the housing market in the United States, and Delaware specifically, over these last three years. In this brief introductory research report, we examine the system of housing supports and their availability to individuals with IDD through a subset of those served by the state's Divi

Novel Variants of SOX4 in Patients with Intellectual Disability.

SOX4 is a transcription factor with pleiotropic functions required for different developmental processes, such as corticogenesis. As with all SOX proteins, it contains a conserved high mobility group (HMG) and exerts its function via interaction with other transcription factors, such as POU3F2. Recently, pathogenic SOX4 variants have been identified in several patients who had clinical features overlapping with Coffin-Siris syndrome. In this study, we identified three novel variants in unrelated patients with intellectual disability, two of which were de novo (c.79G>T, p.Glu27*; c.182G>A p.Arg

Pharmacotherapy of Disruptive Behaviors in Children with Intellectual Disabilities.

Disruptive behaviors are a class of predominantly externalizing behaviors that include physical aggression, property destruction, temper outbursts, verbal aggression, and some forms of self-injurious behaviors. Externalizing behaviors are also major components of disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, trauma-related and stressor-related disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, personality disorders, and other neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Disruptive behaviors and associated disorders are among the most frequent reasons

PLXNA2 as a candidate gene in patients with intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is one of the most common disabilities in humans. In an effort to contribute to the expanding genetic landscape of ID, we describe a novel autosomal recessive ID candidate gene. Combined autozygome/exome analysis was performed in two unrelated consanguineous families with ID. Each of the two families had a novel homozygous likely deleterious variant in PLXNA2 and displayed the core phenotype of ID. PLXNA2 belongs to a family of transmembrane proteins that function as semaphorin receptors. Sema5A-PlexinA2 is known to regulate brain development in mouse, and Plxna2-/

Making recovery meaningful for people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: A recovery approach within mental health services has gained momentum. Its meaning for adults with intellectual disabilities recovering from mental health disorders is less understood. Peoples' experiences of recovery were explored to help inform recovery-focused recommendations for clinical practise. METHOD: A qualitative design using interpretative phenomenological analysis was applied. Nine interviews with people with intellectual disabilities who had experienced mental health disorders were conducted. RESULTS: Two themes that emerged focusing on entry to service and the recov

Determinants of sleep problems in children with intellectual disability.

Children with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep disorders of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep breathing disorders than typically developing children. The present study examined risk factors for these sleep disorders in 447 children (aged 5-18 years), diagnosed with an intellectual disability and comorbid autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or Rett syndrome. Primary caregivers reported on their child's sleep using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), as well as medical comorbidities and functional abilities. Multivariat
