Synthetic anthelmintic drugs not only contribute to the development of pathogen resistance and environmental pollution but also to the development of pathogen resistance. Therefore, identifying the anthelmintic properties of widely used medicinal plants could be of great practical interest to veterinary and human medicine. In our experiment, we evaluated the in vitro survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus subject to aqueous solutions of ethanolic tinctures of traditional medicinal plants (46 species)

This work reports for the first time the in vitro anti Leishmania infantum activity of acetone and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts from 25 extremophile plants from Southern Portugal. DCM extracts from Inula chritmoides and Spergularia rubra were active against axenic promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes, had anti-inflammatory properties on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages, inhibited acetylcholinesterase and had no haemolytic activity on human erythrocytes. Eleven phenolics were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) in I.

The virucidal effect of aqueous extracts of a number of plants was studied in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus titration in SPEV cell culture in microplates, as well as their capacity to induce resistance in virus-infected mice. The aqueous extracts of ledum, motherwort, celandine, black currant, cowberry and bilberry inactivated TBE virus practically completely, and those of St. John's wort, pot marigold, tansy, chamomile, milfoil, and inula only partially. Studied in vivo, the extracts of motherwort, ledum, tansy and black currant induced resistance of mice to TBE virus infection assessed

Costunolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, a small molecular monomer extracted from Inula helenium, has been reported to possess antiproliferative effects on several cancer cell lines. The current study was designed to evaluate the effect of costunolide on sensitivity of K562/ADR chronic myeloid leukemia cells to doxorubicin. The antiproliferative effect of costunolide was assessed by CCK-8 assay. Flow cytometry and Western blot were used to examine the mechanisms of antileukemia action. Costunolide dramatically enhanced doxorubicin-induced antiproliferative activity against K562/ADR cells through

The effects of boiled water extracts of clonorchicidal raw drugs screened by the EPG counts in vivo on the structure of Clonorchis sinensis were investigated. The extracts of Cassia obutusifolia and Dictamnus dasycarpus did not seem to induce the morphological changes of the worms, and in those of Machilus thunbergii and Prunús mume, widening of bladder to lower level of seminal receptacle was visible without any other changes. Those of Inula helenium and Saussurea lappa, however, disclosed regressive and progressive changes as degeneration, atrophy, necrosis, dilatation, etc. of viscera of th

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), in particular high-resolution MS/MS, is able to provide element compositions and substructures for the detected signals. However, it is still challenging to configure the whole structures via linking those substructures. Efforts were devoted here to propose and validate optimal collision energy (OCE) to be an auxiliary structural clue to mass-to-charge ratios (m/z), and online energy-resolved MS was developed to yield OCEs. Chlorogenic acid derivatives (CADs) were utilized as the proof-of-concept because diverse isomers usually initiated by the different linka

Costunolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, is a small molecular monomer extracted from Inula helenium (Compositae). In the present study, we assessed the antileukemia effects of costunolide on the human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line K562 and its combined activity with imatinib. A Cell Counting Kit-8 assay demonstrated that costunolide significantly inhibited K562 cell proliferation and enhanced imatinib-induced anti-proliferative activity. We found that costunolide significantly induced mitochondrial apoptosis in K562 cells by modulating the protein levels of Bcl-2 family members and by induci

Plants respond to increased concentrations of metals by a number of mechanisms, including chelation with phytochelatins (PCs). Soil specimens and plants (Veronica anagalis-aquatica, Typha domingensis, Cynodon dactylon, Chenopodium album, Rumex dentatus, Amaranthus gracilis, Chenopodium murale, Inula viscosa) leaves were collected from two sites in northern Jordan and subsequently metals (cadmium, copper, and lead), sulfate, and PC (from leaves) levels were determined. One of these sites was contaminated with metals and the other served as a control site. The contaminated site had elevated cadm

The Compositae (Asteraceae) family of plants is currently an important cause of allergic plant contact dermatitis in Europe. The family comprises some of the oldest and most valued medicinal plants, and the increasing popularity of herbal medicine and cosmetics may theoretically result in a growing number of Compositae sensitizations from these sources. According to the literature at least 15 species, including among others arnica (Arnica montana), German and Roman chamomile (Chamomilla recutita and Chamaemelum nobile), marigold (Calendula officinalis), Echinacea and elecampane (Inula helenium

The activated microglia contribute to stroke-induced neuroinflammation by upregulating the expression of a pleura of genes that are characterized as either proinflammatory or anti-inflammatory. The natural products alantolactone (Ala) and dehydrodiisoeugenol (Deh) found in Inula helenium L. and Myristica fragrans Houtt., respectively, are regularly used in traditional herb medicine, which play anti-inflammatory and antioxidant roles via regulation of canonical pathways such as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in microglia and microphages. To illustrate the full spectra of gene expression alterat

Air pollution represented by particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is closely related to diseases of the respiratory system. Although the understanding of its mechanism is limited, pulmonary inflammation is closely correlated with PM2.5-mediated lung injury. Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) and epoxy fatty acids play a vital role in the inflammation. Herein, we attempted to use the metabolomics of oxidized lipids for analyzing the relationship of oxylipins with lung injury in a PM2.5-mediated mouse model, and found that the cytochrome P450 oxidases/sEH mediated metabolic pathway was involved in lung i

Isodeoxyelephantopin (IDET), a sesquiterpene lactone compound isolated from the Asteraceae plant Inula helenium, has been demonstrated to possess excellent antimicrobial, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. However, the underlying mechanisms of IDET's anti-inflammatory properties remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of IDET using both in vitro and in vivo models. Our findings revealed that IDET dose-dependently inhibited the upregulation of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α)

Acanthus mollis (Acanthaceae), Achillea ligustica, Artemisia arborescens and Inula viscosa (Asteraceae) are used in Southern Italy against psoriasis and other skin diseases that occur with an imbalanced production of eicosanoids. We here assessed their in vitro effects upon 5-, 12-, 15-LOX and COX-1 enzymes as well as NFκB activation in intact cells as their possible therapeutic targets. All methanol crude extracts inhibited both 5-LOX and COX-1 activities under 200 µg/mL, without significant effects on the 12-LOX pathway or any relevant in vitro free radical scavenging activity.
