The human circadian system in normal and disordered sleep.

The human circadian system regulates rhythmicity in the human body and establishes normal sleep and wake phases. The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), located in the hypothalamus above the optic chiasm, make up the human pacemaker known as the circadian or biological clock, but other essential parts of the circadian system include the pineal gland, retina, and retinohypothalamic tract. The importance of light in resetting the intrinsic human circadian cycle, the intrinsic period of which is slightly longer than 24 hours, ensures that the human cycle will stay entrained to the earth's 24-hour daily

Social jetlag in a longitudinal Chinese wearable cohort: weekly variation, solar-time mismatch, and sleep-activity associations.

PURPOSE: To examine how sleep-corrected social jetlag (SJLsc) varied with work-rest schedules and solar time zone and how it was associated with sleep, physical activity, and nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: Wearable-device and questionnaire data from 63,752 adults contributing 2,037,507 person-weeks were analyzed. SJLsc was the difference in sleep midpoint between workdays and free days, corrected for sleep debt. High SJL was SJLsc > 1 h. Weeks were classified as normal, extended-rest (statutory holidays added), or extended-work (weekend days reassigned as workdays). Province

Meal Timing Jetlag is associated with anxiety, depressive and insomnia symptoms in a French-speaking online cohort: A cross-sectional analysis of ALIMENTAL 2.

BACKGROUND: Chrono-nutrition - when, not only what, one eats relative to circadian timing - is an emerging determinant of mental health. We tested whether Meal Timing Jetlag (MTJL), the workday-to-free-day discordance in eating schedules, is associated with anxiety (primary outcome) and with depressive and insomnia symptoms (secondary), independently of sleep-based circadian misalignment. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the ALIMENTAL 2 French-speaking online cohort (n = 2945). Sleep timing was assessed with the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire and meal timing with a Food Timing Screener.

The health cost of irregular sleep timing: age differences in social jet lag and health outcomes among middle-aged and older adults.

BACKGROUND: Social jet lag, a misalignment between circadian rhythms and societal schedules, has been reported to pose significant health risks. However, evidence of social jet lag's implications on health outcomes among middle-aged and older adults, and the moderating role of age on these associations is limited. We investigated the cross-sectional associations of social jet lag with key health outcomes and considered the moderating role of age. METHODS: This study included 661 participants aged 50-83 drawn from the 2018 wave of the U.S.-based Health and Retirement Study. We computed multipl

Social jetlag and sleep debts are altered in different rosters of night shift work.

BACKGROUND: Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. Hitherto, the magnitude of sleep debt, social jetlag, and Locomotor Inactivity During Sleep (LIDS) in different shift systems is unknown. METHODS: Here, we investigate

The involvement of sympathetic nervous system in essence of chicken-facilitated physiological adaption and circadian resetting.

AIM: The impact of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on the regulation of circadian rhythm and physiological functions is still not clear. Previous studies have found that essence of chicken (EC) supplementation facilitated the physiological adaption and circadian resetting in rats subjected to jet lag. Herein, the effects of SNS on the circadian clock and the hypothesis that EC-induced acceleration of circadian resetting is dependent on the SNS are investigated. MAIN METHODS: Male Wistar rats with superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) were used to investigate the role of the SNS in circ

Toward an Indoor Lighting Solution for Social Jet Lag.

There is growing interest in developing artificial lighting that stimulates intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) to entrain circadian rhythms to improve mood, sleep, and health. Efforts have focused on stimulating the intrinsic photopigment, melanopsin; however, specialized color vision circuits have been elucidated in the primate retina that transmit blue-yellow cone-opponent signals to ipRGCs. We designed a light that stimulates color-opponent inputs to ipRGCs by temporally alternating short- and long-wavelength components that strongly modulate short-wavelength sensi

Nutrition considerations in special environments for aquatic sports.

Elite athletes who compete in aquatic sports face the constant challenge of arduous training and competition schedules in difficult and changing environmental conditions. The huge range of water temperatures to which swimmers and other aquatic athletes are often exposed (16-31 °C for open-water swimming), coupled with altered aquatic thermoregulatory responses as compared with terrestrial athletes, can challenge the health, safety, and performance of these athletes. Other environmental concerns include air and water pollution, altitude, and jetlag and travel fatigue. However, these challenging

Effects of melatonin on vertebrate circadian systems.

In many species of vertebrates the pineal gland and its indoleamine hormone melatonin play central roles in the control of circadian rhythms, whereas in some species, the pineal gland appears to hold little importance. However, recent research indicates that the circadian rhythms of many species of reptiles, birds and mammals, including humans, are synchronized by the administration of exogenous melatonin. These studies have led to questions concerning the role of this hormone in circadian organization in general. Studies of the sites and mechanisms of melatonin action further indicate that me

Assessment of excessive sleepiness and insomnia as they relate to circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

Sleep disturbances are associated with a number of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders, and many psychiatric patients report symptoms such as insomnia, tiredness, fatigue, and excessive sleepiness. Despite their known negative impact on daytime functioning and quality of life, less than 10% of individuals with these symptoms visit physicians specifically for their sleeping problems. Although there are many explanations for this lack of reporting, one possibility is that individuals are often unaware of the impact of sleepiness on their da

Circadian rhythms in airline pilots submitted to long-haul transmeridian flights.

BACKGROUND: Circadian rhythms shift out of phase after transmeridian flights. Desynchronization between body rhythms and the environment is linked to jet lag, which depends on age, flight direction, and number of time zones crossed. METHODS: To investigate this problem in airline pilots, we performed a multivariate analysis of their circadian systems during Madrid-Mexico-Madrid flights (-7 time zones, n = 12) and Madrid-Tokyo-Madrid flights (+8 time zones, n = 21). Telemetry was used to record pilots' activity, skin temperature, and heart rate, obtaining 6 d of continuous data, including 2 d

[Pathology of travelers in the Antilles. Role of imported metropolitan pathology].

A preliminary and retrospective review--with a southern perspective--of some traveller's pathologies, mostly imported, and leading to hospital admission in Guadeloupe (FWI). End stage patients (cancer, AIDS...) frequently travel for a last, "compassional" trip. Ischemic heart disease is the leading pathology imported from the mother country (France). As well as in diabetes or psychiatric illness, destabilization frequently occurs as a consequence of travel (jet lag). Compulsive tennis plus dehydration cause the very common stone passage of nephrolithiasis. Concern is growing for heroin withdra

Circadian gene expression in adolescents: Associations with concurrent circadian disruption and subsequent changes in cardiometabolic risk measures.

OBJECTIVES: Circadian disruption has been linked to adverse metabolic health. Adolescents are particularly susceptible to circadian disruptors, such as delayed sleep onset and social jetlag, which may have sex-specific effects. However, evidence linking these disruptors with circadian gene expression and subsequent cardiometabolic risk remains limited. METHODS: Our study included 203 adolescents (53% females, median age 13.6 years) from the ELEMENT cohort in Mexico City. Sleep was assessed via 7-day wrist actigraphy. A fasting venipuncture blood sample was collected between 8:00 a.m. and 12:0

Impact of social isolation on circadian rhythmicity and clock genes expression in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice exposed to simulated rotating shiftwork/jetlag.

Circadian rhythms regulate fundamental physiological and behavioral functions, yet are increasingly disrupted by contemporary environmental stressors such as rotating shift work and social isolation. Although each disruptor independently compromises circadian homeostasis, their interactive effects remain insufficiently characterized. Given the role of social cues as non-photic zeitgebers, we investigated whether social isolation exacerbates behavioral and molecular circadian disruption induced by repeated light-dark phase shifts, and whether social interaction confers resilience. Circadian misalignment is associated with Covid-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: Circadian system contributes to the regulation of inflammatory processes, but the role of circadian misalignment as a risk factor for contracting Covid-19 has up to now been poorly studied. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between circadian misalignment (chronic disturbance of the circadian system) and the risk of Covid-19 infection in a population of subjects suspected of contact or infection with SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: Cross-sectional single-center study conducted during a period without lockdown in winter 2021. Recruitment took place in a Covid-19 outpatient
