OBJECTIVE: To assess whether antibiotics used for treatment in asymptomatic second-trimester women positive for Mycoplasma or Ureaplasma spp. detected by amniotic-fluid PCR prevents preterm delivery.
DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING: 10 maternal fetal medicine centers in France.
POPULATION: Women with a singleton pregnancy who underwent amniocentesis between 16 and 20 weeks' gestation (weeks) for Down syndrome screening. A sample of 238 women with PCR-positive findings per treatment group was needed to show a 50% reduction in the preterm delivery rate.

A 13-year-old boy consulted a doctor during a holiday in Spain because of high fever, headache and exanthema. A local physician prescribed josamycin, but the medication was lost due to vomiting. A few days later, shortly after returning to the Netherlands, he was hospitalised with a life-threatening neurologic and multi-organ failure. It took two weeks before the diagnosis 'Mediterranean spotted fever' was made and an appropriate antibiotic treatment was started. The patient made a slow but successful recovery. Rereading the hand-written Spanish medical report revealed that it had mentioned a

Antibiotics in manure, soil, wastewater, and groundwater samples from the livestock and poultry farms in Xuzhou City were investigated in the present study. The concentrations of antibiotics in all matrices varied greatly among farms. Total concentrations of fluoroquinolones and macrolides were much higher than those of sulfonamides in manures and soil samples. Total concentrations of antibiotics in wastewater of livestock farms were higher than those of poultry farm. Josamycin (JM) and tilmicosin (TIL) accounted for more than 74% of the nine macrolides in all groundwater samples. Sulfamethizo

The aim of this study was to determine the etiologic agents associated with community-acquired pneumonia in 104 French children ages 18 months to 13 years. Potential respiratory pathogens were identified in 87 (85%) cases; these included respiratory syncytial virus in ten, other viruses in 20, Streptococcus pneumoniae in 14 and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (diagnosed by serologic procedures) in 43. Of 32 patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection who were initially treated with beta-lactam antibiotics, 30 failed treatment. Recovery from mycoplasma infection occurred rapidly in patients treated wit

Macrolides are a group of compounds used to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. Their widespread use results in the contamination of the water environment, which, on the one hand, has a detrimental effect on aquatic organisms and, on the other hand, can lead to the emergence of resistant strains of microorganisms. All of the above determines the need for monitoring of these compounds in the environment, particularly, in water objects. Usually, the high-performance liquid chromatography combined with tandem mass spectrometry method is used to solve this problem, however, this work

Chlamydiae are Gram-negative bacteria with obligate intracellular reproduction and disability to synthesize high-energy compounds such as ATP. Their cycle of development is unique among the prokaryotes: the host cells, mainly epithelial cells, are infected by so-called elementary bodies (EB) which undergo reorganization to form metabolically active reticulate bodies (RB). These RB multiply by binary fission, and after transition into infectious EB they are released within 48-72 hours. Chlamydiae cause prolonged subclinical infections of the conjunctiva, lung, cervix, and urethra. Complications

Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma species are opportunistic pathogens associated with urogenital infections, complications during pregnancy and postpartum infections. Appropriate empirical antimicrobial treatment is necessary to achieve an optimal therapeutic outcome. This study evaluated the prevalence and the antimicrobial susceptibility of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma spp. isolated from 1,008 endocervical samples of outpatients in Crete, Greece, during a five-year period (2012-2016), using the commercially available Mycoview kit (Zeakon diagnostics, France). Ureaplasma spp. was isolate

The practice of defensive medicine is an emerging problem in public health. A common practice of defensive medicine is excessive antibiotic prescribing which is well known to lead to antibiotic resistance, an important public health priority worldwide, not only for its clinical implications (increased morbidity, mortality, duration of illness, frequent development of complications and outbreaks), but also for the economic impact of antibiotic-resistant infections which lead to additional costs related to the use of more expensive drugs and procedures and to longer length of illness and hospita

The 14- and 16-membered macrolide antibiotics are an important structural class. Ubiquitously produced by a number of bacterial strains, namely actinomycetes, purification and structure elucidation of the wide array of analogs is challenging, both for discovery efforts and methodologies to monitor for byproducts, metabolites, and contaminants. Collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry offers an attractive solution, enabling characterization of mixtures, and providing a wealth of structural information. However, interpretation of these spectra can be difficult. We present a study of 14-

The influence of macrolide antibiotics, roxithromycin (RXM) and josamycin (JM) on inflammatory cytokine production from human nasal polyp fibroblasts (NPFs) was examined using an in vitro cell culture technique. Addition of RXM at a concentration of 10.0 microg/ml to cell cultures suppressed both IL-6 and RANTES (but not IL-8) production in response to stimulation with 25.0 ng/ml tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. However, JM could not suppress IL-6, IL-8 and RANTES production from NPFs induced by TNF-alpha stimulation in vitro, even when added to cell cultures at a concentration of 20.0 micro

The determination of the minimal growth-inhibiting concentration (MIC), the minimal metabolism-inhibiting concentration (MMC), and the minimal mycoplasmacidal concentration (MCC) of various antimicrobial compounds for Mycoplasma hominis is influenced by the pH of the test media, the inoculum size, and the incubation time, although each of these factors generally do not affect the minimal concentration more than fourfold. M. hominis is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics, vancomycin, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and polymyxin B. There are great differences in the susceptibility of M. hominis to

The problem of pharyngeal infections caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci of group A (BHSA) remains a challenge for both health providers and general medicine. The present paper was designed to provide the data suggesting the "reappearance" of a highly virulent BHSA infection and a rise in the frequency of its complications (such as acute rheumatic fever and toxic shock syndrome) and to substantiate the necessity of rational antibacterial therapy for the management of this pathology. The agents of choice for the treatment of acute forms of BHSA (tonsillitis and pharyngitis) include penicillin

The susceptibility of 1870 Streptococcus pyogenes and 1595 Streptococcus pneumoniae to macrolides and lincosamides has been monitored from 1993 to 2004 in Central Italy. Among S. pyogenes, 30.2% were erythromycin resistant; 18.5% were also resistant to josamycin and clindamycin (MLS phenotype). After an increasing erythromycin resistance rate in 1993-1997 (maximum 53.16%), a definite decrease was observed since 2001 with resistance rates always less than 30%. Thirty six percent of pneumococcal isolates were erythromycin-resistant, with minor temporal fluctuations; the MLS phenotype was the mos

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a bacterial infection caused by Bordetella pertussis. It poses a significant risk, especially in neonates. This contagious respiratory infection is transmitted via the aerosol route from human reservoirs. The severe form can lead to mortality in approximately 70% of cases. The aim of our study is to report the severity of malignant whooping cough in neonates and the potential contribution of exchange transfusion to improving prognosis. In this case, a 26-day-old infant presented with malignant whooping cough, confirmed by PCR testing. Initial clinical findings inc

In the field of microplastics research, more accurate standardised methods and analytical techniques still need to be explored. In this study, a new method for the microplastics quantitatively and qualitatively analysis by two-phase (ethyl acetate-water) system combined with confocal Raman spectroscopy was developed. Microplastics can be separated from false-positive microplastics in beach sand and marine sediment, attributing to the hydrophobic-lipophilic interaction (HLI) of the two-phase system. Results show that the recovery rates of complex environment microplastics (polypropylene (PP), p

Limited data are available on the prevalence of genital mycoplasmas and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) among Indian patients with genital tract infections. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Mycoplasma hominis (MH), Mycoplasma genitalium (MG), and CT in patients with genital tract infections. The antimicrobial susceptibilities of UU and MH were also assessed. Endocervical swabs/urethral swabs and first void urine samples of patients (n = 164) were collected. UU and MH were detected by culture and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). M

BACKGROUND: The link between guttate psoriasis and streptococcal infection is acknowledged. This form of psoriasis generally follows pharyngitis, but a small number of cases have been described as being triggered by a streptococcal infection other than in the throat. We report the case of a child with streptococcal anitis followed by guttate psoriasis.
CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old boy presented painful perianal erythema present for two weeks with diffuse lesions of guttate psoriasis present since the second week. Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus was found during bacterial examination of the
