INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide, including Kazakhstan. Germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of breast cancer, particularly in its aggressive subtypes. Despite the well-established impact of BRCA1-associated tumors on clinical outcomes, their specific characteristics within the Kazakhstani population remain insufficiently studied. This knowledge gap underscores the necessity for further research, including the present study.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical, morphological

In Kazakhstan, the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) has increased steadily by 39% since 2010. Development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) resistance mutations (ARTRM) is a major hurdle in achieving effective treatment and prevention against HIV. Using HIV pol sequences from 602 PLHIV from Kazakhstan, we analyzed ARTRMs for their association with factors that may promote development of ARTRMs. 56% PLHIV were infected with HIV subtype A6 and 42% with CRF02_AG. The ARTRM Q174K was associated with increased viral load and decreased CD4+ cell count, while infection with CRF02_AG was associa

Plague is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. This pathogen can be transmitted by fleas and has an enzootic cycle, circulating among small mammals, and occasionally epizootic cycles, infecting other species. In China, infected wild rodents are primarily reservoirs of Y. Pestis and are related to human infection (Int. J. Infect. Dis., 33, 2015 and 67; BMC Microbiol., 9, 2009 and 205). Because shepherd dogs prey on and eat rodents (e.g. marmots and mice), they are valuable sentinel animals for plague serosurveillance in endemic disease foci, although their infections are

A cross-sectional survey was performed to obtain current data on the gastrointestinal myiasis of horses in the provinces of Kostanay, Akmola and Karagandy, northern and central Kazakhstan. The stomach, small intestine and rectum of 148 slaughter horses were examined for Gasterophilus spp. larvae during a 26-month study period. All horses were infected with 2nd and 3rd stage larvae (mean intensity: 803±350), and 22% of them harboured >1000 Gasterophilus spp. larvae each. Four species were identified: G. intestinalis (prevalence: 100%; mean intensity: 361±240 larvae), G. haemorrhoidalis (100%; 3

Depression is a common issue among patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Living with chronic hepatitis can create chronic stress, which is a known risk factor for developing or exacerbating depression. This stress can be related to concerns about health, the effectiveness of treatment, and the social implications of the illness. Neuropsychological scales and assessments can objectively measure the severity of depression and other mental health issues in these patients. The presence of depression was studied in 233 patients with chronic viral hepatitis, who were treated in the Infectious Disea

BACKGROUND: Dogs in close contact with humans can serve as a source of potentially dangerous reassortant influenza viruses (IVs) with zoonotic potential. The dog's body can serve as a vessel for the emergence of new IVs. These new viruses can become a source of infection for other animals and humans. The potential for zoonotic transmission of IVs from dogs to humans poses a public health risk.
AIM: Study of the circulation of IVs in the dog population in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
METHODS: Biosamples (oropharyngeal swabs and blood serum) from dogs were collected from veterinary clinics in Almaty in

Acromegaly is a rare condition typically caused by benign pituitary adenomas, resulting in excessive production of growth hormone. Clinical manifestations of acromegaly are diverse, varying from the overgrowth of body tissue to cardiovascular, metabolic, and osteoarticular disorders. Symptoms may emerge slowly, overlapping with other diseases and often involve many different healthcare specialists. In the last decade, efforts to provide an accurate and timely diagnosis of acromegaly have improved disease management and clinical experience. Despite this progress, marked differences in the diagn

Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, is an endemic area of Theileria and Babesia infections in cattle. Current data on the geographic distribution, prevalence, and genetic diversity of these pathogens in vertebrate hosts are lacking in Kazakhstan. The present study aimed to fill this gap, using molecular techniques for the first time. A cross-sectional survey was performed on adult cattle from 40 villages in nine administrative districts of the provinces of Turkistan and Zhambyl, southern Kazakhstan, in summer 2020. A total of 766 blood samples were screened for Theileria annulata (enolase gene

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major threat to global public health. Kazakhstan has the second highest percentage of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases among incident tuberculosis cases in the world (WHO 2013). A high burden of MDR-TB suggests TB prevention, control, and treatment programs are failing. This study provides an epidemiologic profile of TB among injection drug users (IDUs), a high-risk and chronically underserved population, in Kazakhstan.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: The authors studied the characteristics and risk environment of IDUs with self

Kazakhstan and the central Asian republics of Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan have developed anemia prevention and control (APC) policies based on multiple interventions, including education and promotion, oral supplementation of high risk groups and fortification of wheat flour with iron and other micronutrients. These national strategies are aimed at reducing the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency among young children and women of child-bearing age. Strategy development has been assisted by funding and technical assistance from the United Nations Children's

Activity of the opisthorchiasis focus in the Tobol-Ubagan river basins has increased under the influence of several anthropogenic factors. The invasion rate in the population increased 8.7 fold. In the other focus situated in the Lower Turgai-Irgiz, the invasion rate remains stable for many years in spite of the reduced number and invasion rates of ides and Bithynia. Sanitary education of the population should be improved to prevent Opisthorchis invasion; ecological and parasitological studies of the Opisthorchis intermediate hosts in the first focus should be repeated.
