A Submucosal Moderately Poor Differentiated Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Presenting as a Thyroid Mass: A Report of a New Case.

Background: Submucosal laryngeal carcinoma (SLC) is a rare subtype of transglottic laryngeal carcinoma (TLC) and usually originates from the center of the laryngeal ventricle. Nearly 70% of TLC cases are confined to the larynx and 30% show external laryngeal infiltrations. Early stage asymptomatic TLC usually shows occult lesions and tends to grow into lateral parapharyngeal space. Case Summary: We present an unusual case of submucosal moderately poor differentiated laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) characterized by thyroid mass, hoarseness, and dyspnea as the main symptoms. In this case

Non-epithelial tumors of the larynx: case series of 12 years.

PURPOSE: Laryngeal neoplasms are almost always epithelial in origin and squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tumor of the larynx. Non-epithelial tumors make a small subset of laryngeal neoplasms. We present the experience of a single institution to define clinical presentations and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pathology archives and clinical records of our center with the diagnosis of laryngeal tumors between the 2005 and 2018 were reviewed. Age, gender, symptoms, location of the tumor, histopathological diagnosis, treatment modality and disease status were discussed. RESULTS:

Sarcoma of the larynx: treatment results and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas of the larynx are rare neoplasms that constitute less than 1% of laryngeal malignancies. A Medline search found no large series focusing on laryngeal sarcomas. We reviewed the cases of laryngeal sarcomas treated in our cancer center and compared our experiences and treatment results with those from other centers. METHODS: A retrospective review of 10 patients with laryngeal sarcoma treated in our institute between 1980 and 2000 was done to identify tumor characteristics, therapeutic modalities, and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: The patients showed a male predominance (9/1

Adult Laryngeal Ossified Hemangioma: Difficulties in Differential Diagnosis.

Adult laryngeal hemangiomas are uncommon and often poorly symptomatic. The authors describe a laryngeal hemangioma with acute airway obstruction and radiologic findings suggesting a chondrosarcoma-like neoplasm, while pathologic features were consistent with an ossified hemangioma. The presence of fields of bone metaplasia into a classical cavernous hemangioma is an unusual phenomenon which, to our knowledge, was never previously described in the larynx. Difficulties concerning the differential diagnosis and modality of treatment are also discussed.

Role of ancillary techniques in profiling unclassified laryngeal malignancies.

Laryngeal biopsies, contrary to biopsies from many other sites of the body, very often contain minute amounts of tumour tissue that may consist of morphologically undifferentiated tumour only. In haematoxylin- and eosin-stained sections, there may be no indicative features of what specific tumour entity that is present. In the larynx, particularly small round cell neoplasms, primary or metastatic, often cause a diagnostic dilemma and where an incorrect diagnosis can induce substantial clinical consequences for the patient (e.g., primary neuroendocrine carcinomas vs metastatic variants, certain

[Laryngeal MALT lymphoma with known Sjögren syndrome].

Hematopoietic neoplasms represent about 1% of all laryngeal neoplasms. MALT lymphoma arises from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and is associated with chronic inflammatory disease. Patients with Sjögren syndrome have a higher risk for development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (MALT lymphoma). To date, only cases of MALT lymphoma of the salivary glands, thymus and stomach associated with Sjögren syndrome have been published. We present the case of a MALT lymphoma of the larynx associated with Sjögren syndrome. Radiation and chemotherapy are the first line of therapy as published in the literature.

Case report: A case report on surgical management of laryngeal paraganglioma.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal paragangliomas are rare neoplasms originating from neuroendocrine cells within the laryngeal paraganglia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman presented with two years of hoarseness, progressing to dysphagia over the past year, and two months of dyspnea. Laryngoscopy showed a supraglottic mass extending into the right pyriform sinus. Head and neck CT scan revealed a 2 × 3 cm mass, suggestive of laryngeal paraganglioma. Following a discussion of options, she underwent tracheostomy, lateral pharyngotomy and mass excision. Post-operatively, she was asymptomatic. Histopa

Laryngeal histoplasmosis.

Histoplasma capsulatum is an endemic granulomatous fungus disease. Involving the larynx of an immunocompetent patient with this is a rare manifestation. A sixty years old farmer who was previously diagnosed and treated as pulmonary tuberculosis was presented as a progressive change of voice and intermittent attack of unproductive cough with no history of stridor and fever for last 7 months. Clinical and imaging investigations were suggestive of laryngeal tuberculosis or laryngeal neoplasm. Laryngoscopy revealed edema, erythema and leukoplakia of the right vocal cord. Histopathological report s

Paragangliomas Arising From the Laryngeal Paraganglia: Thyroid and Laryngeal Paragangliomas With Radiology-Pathology Correlation.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that arise from the embryonic neural crest cells of the extra-adrenal chromaffin and non-chromaffin cellular system. Paragangliomas arising from the laryngeal paraganglia, which occur in the thyroid and larynx, are a rare subset of paragangliomas compared to the more common locations of the carotid body, vagale, jugular, and tympanic paragangliomas. The preoperative diagnosis of both thyroid and laryngeal paragangliomas may pose a challenge due to cytological, pathological, and imaging non-specificity that overlaps with many other neoplasms. These lesio

[Secondary neoplasms of the larynx from a colonic adenocarcinoma].

Secondary neoplasms of the larynx are rare and account for 0.09-0,4% of all laryngeal tumours. Cutaneous melanomas are the preponderant primaries metastasizing to the larynx, followed by renal cell carcinomas, breast and lung carcinomas. Colonic adenocarcinoma metastases to the larynx are extremely rare. Tumours spreading to the larynx may be asymptomatic or may result in hoarseness, stridor or airway obstruction. Patients with metastasis of colonic adenocarcinoma to the larynx usually present with disseminated disease. We present a case of an isolated laryngeal metastasis from a colonic adeno

Transoral robotic surgery for the treatment of laryngeal chondrosarcoma: A case report.

IMPORTANCE: Transoral robotic surgery has revolutionized the practice of head and neck surgery over the past decade, with indications now expanding to include laryngeal pathology. Although laryngeal chondrosarcoma is a rare entity, trends in otolaryngology literature suggest that it can frequently be managed with conservative approaches. We hope to inspire other head and neck surgeons to consider transoral robotic surgery for the treatment of such tumors so that outcomes data can be collected and studied. OBSERVATION: An 87-year-old male presented with a left-sided supraglottic mass that was

Solitary laryngeal plasmacytoma treated by TOMES: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal plasmacytomas are rare plasma cell neoplasms that can mimic other lesions, posing a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Their location within the airway makes early diagnosis and precise management crucial to prevent airway compromise. This report aims to describe the first documented case of solitary laryngeal plasmacytoma managed with transoral microelectrode surgery (TOMES), highlighting its potential as a minimally invasive therapeutic option. CASE REPORT: We describe a 60-year-old man with a laryngeal tumour initially misinterpreted. The tumor, located in the ri

Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the Larynx.

The larynx is a rare site of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), accounting for less than 1% of all primary laryngeal neoplasms. We report a rare case of laryngeal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in an 85-year-old female patient, which was difficult to diagnose even after several biopsies from the primary laryngeal lesion, both under local and general anesthesia, and the diagnosis of DLBCL was obtained from the lymph node biopsy, which appeared in the proximity of the larynx 2 months after the first biopsy from the larynx. Since the diagnosis of laryngeal NHL is sometimes difficult wh

[Soft tissue sarcoma of larynx: a case report].

The clinical manifestation was gradually hoarseness for half a year, with aggravation of dyspnea in three days. Physical examination and laryngoscopy showed laryngeal neoplasm, the glottis was not exposed, pedicle, no adhesion with the surrounding. CT scan showed glottic soft-tissue, density, unclear boundary. Enhanced CT showed anterior commissure thickening and tumor invasion of supraglottic region. Preoperative biopsy results: fibroblasts and fibrocyte were arranged in a crisscross pattern. Postoperative pathology showed laryngeal soft tissue sarcoma.

Laryngeal granuloma occurring after surgery for laryngeal cancer treated by surgical removal and immediate post-operative radiotherapy: A case report.

RATIONAL: Laryngeal granulomas are benign lesion that rarely occurs after surgery of laryngeal cancer. Until now there has not been standard treatment for it. PATIENT CONCERN: The patient was diagnosed with laryngeal neoplasm one and half a month ago. Endoscopic low-temperature plasma knife in the radical excision of left vocal cord was performed under the general anesthesia. Postoperative histopathological examination confirmed left vocal cord tumor was highly differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Then the patient suffered unexplained intermittent dyspnea which persisted nea

Fluoro-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography detects Ewing's sarcoma of the larynx with multiple distant bone metastases: a case report and literature review.

Ewing sarcomas (EWS) are highly malignant neoplasms of mesenchymal origin that are rare in the head and neck. Only a few laryngeal EWS have been reported in the literature. We report a 47 years-old man who visited our hospital for medical help after 5 months of hoarseness and sore throat. Computed tomography (CT) showed uneven thickening of the epiglottis fold, right vocal cord, and anterior union. In addition, fluoro-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET)/CT has confirmed high activity in the already known laryngeal and nodal lesions, and has revealed otherwise unkno

Invasive fungal laryngitis: A rare mimic of laryngeal cancer.

Primary fungal laryngitis is a very rare clinical entity that usually manifests in immunocompromised patients due to impaired protection of the laryngeal mucosal barrier. We report a case of a 65-year-old patient with bilateral lung transplantation who presented with subacute worsening cough, hoarseness and clinical findings of hypercapnic respiratory failure. Initial imaging from barium swallow showed a mass narrowing the upper airway with a subsequent CT neck exam confirming a new large, invasive glottic mass narrowing the airway, which was initially suspicious for an aggressive malignancy.

Basosquamous carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx with sudden death from asphyxia.

Excluding laryngeal papillomas, neoplasms of the hypopharynx rarely cause sudden asphyxial death in adults. We describe the first such death from a carcinoma and review the literature for similar cases since 1966. A high clinical index of suspicion and early laryngoscopy in individuals with symptoms suggestive of hypopharyngeal neoplasia are important.
