Effect of Aloe barbadensis Mill. formulation on Letrozole induced polycystic ovarian syndrome rat model.

This is a preliminary study that explores the efficacy of Aloe vera gel formulation as a possible therapeutic agent in the prevention and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is recognized as the most common endocrinopathy of women. Increased androgen synthesis, disrupted folliculogenesis, and insulin resistance lie at the patho-physiological core of PCOS. Current therapy for such a syndrome is use of insulin sensitizers. Large randomized clinical trials of metformin as the insulin-sensitizing drug, however, suggested that it produces many side effects after prolonged usage. Fo

Aloe vera gel protects liver from oxidative stress-induced damage in experimental rat model.

Aloe vera is a semi-tropical plant of Liliaceae family which has a wide range of applications in traditional medicine. In the present study, we sought to investigate the heptaoprotective potential of Aloe vera gel as a diet supplement. To achieve this goal, we have designed in vitro and in vivo experimental models of chemical-induced liver damage using male Sprague-Dawley rat. In the in vitro model, its effect was evaluated on Fenton's reaction-induced liver lipid peroxidation. Co-incubation with gel significantly reduced the generation of liver lipid peroxide (LPO). Next, to see the similar e

In vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori action of 30 Chinese herbal medicines used to treat ulcer diseases.

Infection by Helicobacter pylori has been ascertained to be an important etiologic impetus leading usually to chronic active gastritis and gastric ulcer with growing incidences worldwide. Utilizing as the test pathogen a standard and five clinic strains of Helicobacter pylori, the antibacterial action was assessed in vitro with ethanol extracts of 30 Chinese herbal medicines which have been frequently prescribed since ancient times for treating gastritis-like disorders. Among the 30 tested materials, the ethanol extracts of Abrus cantoniensis (Fabaceae), Saussurea lappa (Asteraceae) and Eugeni

Anaphylactic reaction to young garlic.

BACKGROUND: Garlic is well known to cause contact dermatitis and asthma. However, it is a very rare cause of food allergy. We present the case of a 23-year-old woman with previous history of allergy to pollen and dried fruit, and food-dependent, exercise-induced anaphylaxis for which no specific food could be identified as responsible, who experienced an anaphylactic reaction after eating young garlic. METHODS: Skin prick tests and specific IgE immunoassay with several pollens and foods were performed, as well as the prick-prick test with young garlic and SDS-PAGE followed by immunoblotting I

Analysis of fatty acids, aliphatic esters, and in vitro studies of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities for Recineckea carnea and Tupistra chinensis from the Guizhou Province.

Recineckea carnea and Tupistra chinensis collected from the Guizhou province (China) were evaluated in this study. Petroleum ether fractions from the two herbs were subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis; 10 species, which were fatty acids or aliphatic esters, were identified. The antimicrobial activities of a variety of extracts were evaluated against four microorganisms. The methanol extract (ME), chloroform fraction, and ethyl acetate fraction from T. chinensis exhibited antimicrobial activities comparable to standard antibiotics, whereas none of the investigated extract

Poisoning with Boophane disticha: a forensic case.

Scales from the bulb are traditionally used as wound dressing after circumcision and as general wound dressing. Concoctions of the bulb taken orally cause sedation, analgesia, visual hallucinations, irrational behaviour, coma or death. A man ingested 150 ml of a concoction to see who placed a spell on him. He started to hallucinate, thinking that somebody was attacking him. He pulled his gun and fired shots randomly, killing one person and injuring others. A gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer was used to analyze a sample of the concoction. The sample contained buphandrin, buphanine and crinam

Gastrointestinal stimulant effect of Urginea indica Kunth. and involvement of muscarinic receptors.

Urginea indica Kunth. (Family; Liliaceae) was studied for its gastrointestinal stimulant effect to rationalize the traditional medicinal uses as a digestive aid, stomachic and laxative. The crude aqueous-methanol extract of Urginea indica bulb (Ui.Cr) was tested on mice and isolated gut preparations. Ui.Cr, which was tested positive for alkaloids, tannins and coumarins, increased faecal output and accelerated charcoal meal transit in mice (6-12 mg/kg, p.o.), similar to that caused by carbachol (10 mg/kg). Ui.Cr (0.01-1 mg/mL) caused a spasmogenic effect in guinea-pig ileum that was reproduced

Alkaloids from Hippeastrum papilio.

Galanthamine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor marketed as a hydrobromide salt (Razadyne®, Reminyl®) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is obtained from Amaryllidaceae plants, especially those belonging to the genera Leucojum, Narcissus, Lycoris and Ungernia. The growing demand for galanthamine has prompted searches for new sources of this compound, as well as other bioactive alkaloids for the treatment of AD. In this paper we report the isolation of the new alkaloid 11β-hydroxygalanthamine, an epimer of the previously isolated alkaloid habranthine, which was identified using NMR

Structure and multipartite genome architecture of the mitochondrial genome in the endangered medicinal plant Fritillaria taipaiensis P. Y. Li.

Fritillaria taipaiensis: a medicinal plant of the Liliaceae family endemic to the Qinling Mountains and southern regions of China, is renowned for its therapeutic properties in relieving cough and moistening the lungs. Despite growing interest in the organellar genomes of related species, the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of F. taipaiensis has remained uncharacterized. In this study, we successfully assembled and annotated the complete mitogenome of F. taipaiensis using a combination of Illumina and Nanopore technologies. The mitogenome consisted of 23 circular chromosomes with a total len

Saponins of Paris polyphylla for the Improvement of Acne: Anti-Inflammatory, Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Immunomodulatory Effects.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a recurring nature that seriously impacts patients' quality of life. Currently, antibiotic resistance has made it less effective in treating acne. However, Paris polyphylla (P. polyphylla) is a valuable medicinal plant with a wide range of chemical components. Of these, P. polyphylla saponins modulate the effects in vivo and in vitro through antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects. Acne is primarily associated with inflammatory reactions, abnormal sebum function, micro-ecological disorders, hair follicle hyper

Determination of aspartic acid enantiomers in bio-samples by capillary electrophoresis.

Enantiomeric separation and detection of D,L-aspartic acid (Asp) derivatized with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F) by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using modified cyclodextrins as chiral selectors was studied. Heptakis(2,3, 6-tri-O-methyl)-beta-cyclodextrin(TM-beta-CD) was most effective for enantiomeric separation of NBD-D,L-Asp with optimum conditions of 30 mM TM-beta-CD in 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 4.0) and the limit of detection (LOD) attained was 100 nM for each enantiomer. The method proposed in the present study was convenient for both D- and L-Asp determination since the
