Artificial neural network application in the diagnosis of disease conditions with liver ultrasound images.

The preliminary study presented within this paper shows a comparative study of various texture features extracted from liver ultrasonic images by employing Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), a type of artificial neural network, to study the presence of disease conditions. An ultrasound (US) image shows echo-texture patterns, which defines the organ characteristics. Ultrasound images of liver disease conditions such as "fatty liver," "cirrhosis," and "hepatomegaly" produce distinctive echo patterns. However, various ultrasound imaging artifacts and speckle noise make these echo-texture patterns diffi

Artificial and bioartificial liver support: a review of perfusion treatment for hepatic failure patients.

Liver transplantation and blood purification therapy, including plasmapheresis, hemodiafiltration, and bioartificial liver support, are the available treatments for patients with severe hepatic failure. Bioartificial liver support, in which living liver tissue is used to support hepatic function, has been anticipated as an effective treatment for hepatic failure. The two mainstream systems developed for bioartificial liver support are extracorporeal whole liver perfusion (ECLP) and bioreactor systems. Comparing various types of bioartificial liver in view of function, safety, and operability,

A prognostic score for patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure treated with plasma exchange-centered artificial liver support system.

Artificial liver support system (ALSS) therapy is widely used in patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF). We aimed to develop a predictive score to identify the subgroups who may benefit from plasma exchange (PE)-centered ALSS therapy. A total of 601 patients were retrospectively enrolled and randomly divided into a derivation cohort of 303 patients and a validation cohort of 298 patients for logistic regression analysis, respectively. Five baseline variables, including liver cirrhosis, total bilirubin, international normalized ratio of prothrombin tim

Single-center experience in 127 adult patients, mono or dual artificial liver support therapy, in patients with acute liver failure.

BACKGROUND: Acute liver failure (ALF) is a serious condition characterized by sudden liver dysfunction, jaundice and hepatic encephalopathy. Its mortality rate of approximately 80% underscores the urgent need for effective treatments. Supportive extracorporeal therapies (SET), which temporarily support liver function and remove toxins, have shown promise in improving outcomes in acute liver failure (ALF). The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of dual supportive extracorporeal therapy (SET) and mono supportive extracorporeal therapy in patients with acute liver failure. METHODS: A

Application of artificial liver in immune-related liver injury induced by immune checkpoint inhibitor: Case reports and review of the literature.

The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can improve survival of patients with malignant tumors, however, the ICI treatment is associated with unpredictable toxicity as immune-related adverse effects (irAEs). Here we report two cases of metastatic malignant gastrointestinal tumors where severe immune-mediated hepatotoxicity (IMH) developed, characterized by liver failure, after the ICI therapy. Through a strong immunosuppressive treatment and a non-biological artificial liver and supportive treatment, the liver function was restored in both cases, and the anti-tumor treatment effect was

Artificial intelligence-assisted rapid on-site evaluation in liver biopsy: a diagnostic accuracy study.

BACKGROUND: Liver biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing liver lesions but is hampered by the time-consuming nature of conventional pathology. Artificial Intelligence-assisted Rapid On-Site Evaluation (AI-ROSE) offers a promising solution for real-time assessment of biopsy samples. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of AI-ROSE in liver biopsies using histopathology as the reference standard. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with liver lesions undergoing CT-guided percutaneous biopsy were prospectively enrolled. Each biopsy sample underwent triple assessment: AI-ROSE analy

Artificial Nutrition Support in Acute Liver Failure in Intensive Care Unit: A Practical Approach.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening clinical syndrome characterized by the rapid onset of severe hepatic dysfunction, coagulopathy, and hepatic encephalopathy in patients without preexisting chronic liver disease. ALF remains associated with high morbidity and mortality, largely driven by profound metabolic instability, systemic inflammation, and multiorgan dysfunction. The liver's central role in carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism makes metabolic derangements an early and defining feature of ALF. Hypoglycemia, hyperlactatemia, and hyperammonemia reflect impaired hepatic b

Artificial intelligence predicts recurrent autoimmune hepatitis after liver transplantation in a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an important indication for liver transplantation (LT), but recurrence affects over 30% of recipients, threatening long-term survival. Current strategies to prevent recurrence and progressive graft fibrosis remain suboptimal, with limited evidence to guide selection of immunosuppressive regimens. We aimed to develop a dynamic, individualized, artificial intelligence-powered model for post-transplant recurrent AIH. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective cohort study of 706 patients who underwent LT for AIH between January 1987 and June 2020

Hepatic Steatosis Analysis in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Based on Artificial Intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver, excluding excessive alcohol consumption and other known causes of liver injury. Animal models are often used to explore different pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic targets of MASLD. The aim of this study is to apply an artificial intelligence (AI) system based on second-harmonic generation (SHG)/two-photon-excited fluorescence (TPEF) technology to automatically assess the dynamic patterns of hepatic steatosis in MASLD mouse models. METHODS: We evaluated th

Rethinking selection criteria for liver transplantation in hepatocellular carcinoma: from morphology to artificial intelligence.

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplantation (LT) is a uniquely curative treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as it removes both the tumor and the underlying cirrhotic liver. However, organ scarcity makes candidate selection a central clinical and ethical issue. Over the past three decades, selection has evolved from simple morphologic thresholds toward increasingly multidimensional models of oncologic risk. AREAS COVERED: This review examines the evolution of selection criteria for LT in HCC, from the Milan criteria and subsequent morphology-based expansions to models incorporating tumor bio

Perfluoroether Peptide-Modified Artificial Viral Capsid for Enhanced Doxorubicin Delivery to Liver Cancer Cells.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is difficult to treat owing to poor tumor selectivity, rapid hepatic clearance, intrinsic drug resistance, and the high susceptibility of healthy liver tissue to off-target toxicity. Although doxorubicin (Dox) is a potent and widely used chemotherapeutic agent, its application in liver cancer is severely constrained by nonspecific biodistribution, rapid systemic elimination, and dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, necessitating the development of safer and more efficient delivery systems. Herein, we report a peptide-based artificial viral capsid system constructed through t

Artificial Intelligence in Endohepatology: Toward an Intelligent One-Stop Shop for Liver-Directed Endoscopy.

Endohepatology (the implementation of contemporary advanced endoscopy in hepatology) has reached a point where endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided liver biopsy, portal pressure gradient measurement, parenchymal elastography, and variceal screening and therapy can be integrated into a single procedural session of liver-directed endoscopy. Concurrently, artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized luminal endoscopy and is advancing rapidly across hepatology imaging, digital pathology, and outcome prediction, yet its translation into the liver-targeted endoscopic workflow has never been synthes

LI-RADS-aligned artificial intelligence for liver cancer diagnosis: methods, evidence, and clinical readiness.

Liver tumor diagnosis relies heavily on imaging, and the liver imaging reporting and data system (LI-RADS) provides a structured framework for evaluating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and related entities in at-risk populations. Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly expanded across CT, MRI, and ultrasound/CEUS, yet its clinical credibility depends on adherence to modality-appropriate tasks, robust validation, and alignment with LI-RADS semantics. This narrative review synthesizes methodological patterns, diagnostic performance, and readiness for clinical translation of AI systems designed
