Pelvic incidence (PI) is a measure of the sagittal orientation of the sacrum relative to the acetabula and is not dependent on posture. In asymptomatic adults, PI correlates with lumbar lordosis. Lumbar lordosis is shown to increase with age following the onset of unassisted bipedal locomotion in children, but to what extent PI changes in relation to lumbar lordosis during skeletal maturation is unclear. The purpose of this study is to understand how PI, lumbar lordosis, and age are related in children and adolescents. PI, supine lumbar lordosis (SLL), and individual wedging angles of the lumb

BACKGROUND: Given that the pelvis is the pedestal on which the spine lies, its morphology has been observed to be associated with specific sagittal spinal shapes and should therefore be taken into account when dealing with pathologic conditions of the spine. However, the exact relationship between the pelvic morphology and lumbar lordosis still remains poorly defined. We hypothesized that the shape of the lumbar lordosis and its relationship with the pelvis could be described using anatomic parameters, independently of posture.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the variation of lumbar segmental

Sagittal alignment of the spine significantly affects the physical function. In this article, we review the clinical application of several spinal-pelvic parameters, analyze the impact factors of sagittal alignment and provide calculating methods to value the correcting degrees. Spine surgeons should get a deep understanding of the spinal-pelvic parameters, differentiate the functional and structural imbalance. Every patient needs thorough preoperative evaluation to restore the proper alignment during surgery and avoid overcorrection.

High-grade dysplastic spondylolisthesis (HGDS) is a subset of L5-S1 spondylolisthesis that occurs due to dysmorphic anatomy at the lumbosacral junction, often resulting in sagittal imbalance. Enhanced understanding of global sagittal alignment has led many to preferentially treat HGDS with reduction and fusion to restore sagittal balance. The purpose of this article is to review published surgical techniques for obtaining sagittal correction in HGDS and to evaluate the current evidence regarding the associated surgical complications.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure the validity and reliability of flexicurve measurements of cervical curvature in the sagittal plane in adults.
METHODS: One hundred thirteen adults were assessed in the seated position with flexicurve radiographs. Two groups were measured: (1) the validity group (n = 55), and (2) the reliability group (n = 58). Both groups were subdivided into 3 subgroups according to body mass index: underweight, normal weight, and overweight. Radiographs were simultaneously taken with flexicurve molded on the cervical spine. Pearson's correlation and the r

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Estrogens are important effectors of reproduction and are critical for upregulating female reproductive behavior or lordosis in females. In addition to the importance of transcriptional regulation of genes by 17β-estradiol-bound estrogen receptors (ER), extranuclear signal transduction cascades such as protein kinase A (PKA) are also important in regulating female sexual receptivity. GPR30 (G-protein coupled receptor 30), also known as GPER1, a putative membrane ER (mER), is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds 17β-estradiol with an affinity that is similar to that possesse

BACKGROUND: Lordosis is the bending of the lumbar spine that gives the vertebral column of humans its characteristic ventrally convex curvature. Infants develop lordosis around the time when they acquire bipedal locomotion. Even macaques develop a lordosis when they are trained to walk bipedally. The aim of this study was to investigate why humans and some animals develop a lumbar lordosis while learning to walk bipedally.
RESULTS: We developed a musculoskeletal model of the lumbar spine, that includes an asymmetric, dorsally shifted location of the spinal column in the body, realistic moment

BACKGROUND: The strength of abdominal muscle and back extensors or their balances are commonly mentioned as major indicators of potential low back pain (LBP). Former studies on anthropometrics in terms of trunk muscle strength seemed to lack precision in methodology. Furthermore, the extension-flexion ratio, which is a good parameter of trunk muscle balance, was not as much studied as simple maximum torques in this area of study.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate relationship between trunk muscle strength and lumbar lordosis, sacral angle in patients who did not show significant abnormal findings on

STUDY DESIGN: An experimental study of the influence of intrinsic muscle imbalance on the spinal column of a growing rabbit.
OBJECTIVES: To create an in vivo experimental model of scoliosis for comparison with human scoliosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is evidence that asymmetric lordosis may produce scoliosis and that there is muscle imbalance in scoliotic patients.
METHODS: Surgical tethering of the spinous apophysis and transverse apophysis of rabbits was performed at three upper levels on the same side of the spine to simulate dominance of one side of the paravertebral musculatu

We described transient low or non selective proteinuria after forced lordosis was as a characteristic of orthostatic proteinuria and the decrease in the urinary IgA/IgG ratio after lordosis was useful in confirming the diagnosis of the disease. In this study we examined the urinary excretion of IgG, IgA and IgG4, an anionic immunoglobulin, after forced lordosis in 44 orthostatic proteinuria children (group OA) and 24 chronic glomerulonephritis patient in stable stage (group GN). Urinary IgG4/IgG after lordosis was not significantly different between groups OA and GN. It showed that urinary IgG

We described a transient low or non-selective proteinuria after forced lordosis as a characteristic of orthostatic proteinuria and the heteroporous theory and sieving function theory which might explain the mechanism of orthostatic proteinuria. The angiogenic action of the renin-angiotensin system played an important part in these theories. Angiotensin II was recognized as the key regulator of renal sodium excretion, because it reduced the urinary Na/K ratio. Since the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the renin-angiotensin system on the mechanism of orthostatic proteinu

The influence of backrest inclination and lumbar support on the shape of the lumbar spine in sitting positions has been studied radiographically on 38 healthy subjects. Four angles of backrest inclination and four different sizes of lumbar support were studied. In addition, the lumbar support was placed at three different lumbar levels. When sitting down from a standing position, the pelvis rotates and the lumbar lordosis decreases. Increases in the backrest-seat angle had only minor effect on the lumbar lordosis. A lumbar support, on the other hand, had a significant influence: the lordosis i

AIMS: The risk factors for abnormal spinopelvic mobility (SPM), defined as an anterior rotation of the spinopelvic tilt (∆SPT) ≥ 20° in a flexed-seated position, have been described. The implication of pelvic incidence (PI) is unclear, and the concept of lumbar lordosis (LL) based on anatomical limits may be erroneous. The distribution of LL, including a unusual shape in patients with a high lordosis, a low pelvic incidence, and an anteverted pelvis seems more relevant.
METHODS: The clinical data of 311 consecutive patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty was retrospectively analyzed. We

BACKGROUND: Postural deviations such as thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis are prevalent consequences of sedentary behavior, contributing to pain and disability. We aim to review the evidence on biofeedback modalities as active, user-engaged alternatives to passive correction targeting kyphosis and lordosis posture.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore (inception: September 2025) identified studies on adult populations. Primary outcomes were spinal alignment measures; secondary outcomes included muscle activity, pain, usability, and satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Restoring lumbar lordosis is important for adult spinal deformity surgery. Several reports have suggested that lumbar lordosis distribution has a significant impact on the outcome of surgery, including lumbar distribution index (LDI), proximal lumbar lordosis (PLL), and distal lumbar lordosis (DLL). The features of lumbar lordosis distribution are inconclusive in asymptomatic adults.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to evaluate the variation of lumbar lordosis distribution (LDI, PLL, and DLL) and to identify associated factors in asymptomatic adult volunteers.
METHODS: We performed

Haemal lordosis, a frequent skeletal deformity in teleost fish, has long been correlated with increased mechanical loads induced by swimming activity. In the present study, we examine whether juvenile zebrafish can recover from haemal lordosis and explore the musculoskeletal mechanisms involved. Juveniles were subjected to a swimming challenge test (SCT) that induced severe haemal lordosis in 49% of the animals and then immediately transferred them to 0.0 total body lengths (TL) per second of water velocity for a week. The recovery from lordosis was examined by means of whole mount staining, h

PURPOSE: Lateral radiographs are commonly used to assess cervical sagittal alignment. Three assessment methods have been described and are commonly utilized in clinical practice. These methods are described for perfect lateral cervical radiographs, however in everyday practice radiograph quality varies. The aim of this study was to compare the reliability and reproducibility of 3 cervical lordosis (CL) measurement methods.
METHODS: Forty-four standing lateral radiographs were randomly chosen from a lateral long-cassette radiograph database. Measurements of CL were performed with: Cobb method

Despite the increasing recognition of the functional and clinical importance of lumbar lordosis, little is known about its description, particularly in Egypt. At the same time, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been introduced as a noninvasive diagnostic technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomy of the lumbar lordosis using midsagittal MRIs. Normal lumbar spine MRIs obtained from 93 individuals (46 males, 47 females; 25-57 years old) were evaluated retrospectively. The lumbar spine curvature and its segments "vertebrae and discs" were described and measured. The lumbar

OBJECTIVE: Although contributions to sagittal alignment have been characterized for anterior, posterior and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, sagittal alignment after lateral transpsoas interbody fusion (LTIF) has not yet been characterized. This study examined the ability of LTIF to restore lumbar lordosis and identified factors associated with change in sagittal alignment.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients and 67 levels were studied. Segmental lordosis, anterior-posterior cage position, and cage obliquity were measured on preoperative and postoperative radiographs and CT scans. Change in
