Blood or urine specimens from nearly 600 fatally injured drivers in two Los Angeles County studies were analyzed for the presence of alcohol and other drugs of abuse, including PCP, cocaine, opiates and marijuana. The results of the preliminary study indicate that 65 out of 102 fatally injured drivers had used alcohol and/or another drug of abuse - 34 had used alcohol only, 12 had used one or more other drug(s) of abuse, and 19 had used alcohol in combination with another drug of abuse. In Los Angeles, air pollution disproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income residents. Routine city-wide measurements of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), of concern for health and contributing to urban air pollution, are notably lacking. Prior studies that indicate gonorrhea rates are associated with alcohol outlet density and neighborhood deterioration have been cross-sectional and cannot establish causality. Hemoglobin SD-Los Angeles is an uncommon sickle hemoglobinopathy. We describe a boy with documented Hb SD-Los Angeles who had experienced acute splenic sequestration, pneumococcal sepsis, aplastic crisis and functional asplenia during his first two years of life. We suggest that children with Hb SD-Los Angeles are at similar risks for the life-threatening complications which characterize sickle cell anemia and should receive the same comprehensive medical care currently recommended for children with Hb SS disease.

OBJECTIVE: Explore trends in trauma incidence and mortality rates in Los Angeles County.
DESIGN: Data for patients treated at Los Angeles County trauma centers from 2000 to 2011 were analyzed for this study. Age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates were calculated by gender, race, injury type, injury severity, and mechanism of injury.
